Firstleaf Wine Subscription December 2018 Review
Firstleaf offers an impressive level of customization. You can choose whether to receive all white, all reds, or a mix of both. You can also choose whether to receive US wines, imported wines, or a mix of both. You can also choose how frequently you’d like to receive boxes and indicate if you’re interested in Rose or Sparkling varieties.
This month I received the Firstleaf newsletter. This isn’t always included, so I was excited to get some more robust and educational reading material.
2017 Tailored Republic Pinot Noir (California) – Listed Value $26.00 (Member Price $20.80)
Tasting Notes: Oak, Earth, Raspberry
This was a beautiful Pinot Noir that I actually served with a holiday meal. It was smooth, featured dark fruits and lively acidity. Medium bodied, medium sweetness and moderately low tannins added to the multi-layered complexity.
2017 25 Degrees Sauvignon Blanc (Chile) – Listed Value $24.00 (Member Price $19.20)
Tasting Notes: Mineral, Lemon, Grass
Awards:
- Silver Medal, Critics Challenge International Wine Competition (2018)
- Silver Medal, International Women's Wine Competition (2018)
- Bronze Medal, Global Wine Awards (2018)
This medium bodied, highly acidic wine was a delicious addition to our holiday meal. Low in Tannins, medium sweetness and a balanced tartness paired well with our Turkey dinner. I found it to be a zesty and refreshing complement to a rather heavy meal.
2017 Open Secret Malvasia Bianca (Paso Robles, California) – Listed Value $20.00 (Member Price $18.00)
Tasting Notes: Lemon, Honey, Tropical Fruit
Awards:
- Silver Medal, Harvest Challenge (2018)
This sweet, light white was a perfect sip on its own and with the sharp cheese that I paired it with. Fruity with medium body and acidity, I would suggest this variety for a luncheon or just some gold ‘ole fashion day drinking.
2016 Daring Escape Lazy Breeze White (California) – Listed Value $22.00 (Member Price $17.60)
Tasting Notes: Peach, Lemon, Lime
Awards:
- Silver Medal, Harvest Challenge (2018)
- Gold Medal, San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition (2018)
- Silver Medal, Sommelier Challenge (2018)
- Silver Medal, Winemaker Challenge (2018)
- Silver Medal, Harvest Challenge (2017)
- Silver Medal, Northwest Food And Wine Festival (2017)
- Silver Medal, Sommelier Challenge (2017)
This “Lazy Breeze” white would remind you of a Pinot Grigio, it’s citrusy & acidic with a mild fruity sweetness. I think that this was my favorite of the white’s the month, as it has the right level of tartness for me and is something that I can see myself enjoying during dinner and into the evening without getting tired of it after a glass or two.
2017 Raphe Sauvignon Blanc (California) – Listed Value $21.00 (Member Price $16.80)
Tasting Notes: Tropical Fruit, Lime, Lemon
Awards:
- Silver Medal, Harvest Challenge (2018)
This white wasn’t for me. It was far too acidic, and the sweetness didn’t balance well for my taste buds. I tasted an undernote of grapefruit. On the positive, I do love the label!
2017 Treaty 42 Cellars Monastrell (Spain) – Listed Value $22.00 (Member Price $17.60)
Tasting Notes: Spices, Leather, Blueberry
Awards:
- Bronze Medal, Harvest Challenge (2018)
This full-bodied red features a ton of fruit, heavy tannins, and mild acidity. My husband (who is not very picky when it comes to reds) drank this without a word – to the good or the bad. I personally didn’t care for this Spanish wine.
Verdict: This Firstleaf club membership breaks down to around $16.50 per bottle, including shipping, for 6 bottles. Each of the bottles that I received retail for at least that (usually $20+) – but to me, the convenience is the value that I love the most! Between my husband and I, we liked 5 of the 6 bottles of wine that we received this month.
The Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Because of the curation, it’s unlikely that you would get the same items that I’m showing here.
