Our Review
Too Faced Cosmetics Chocolate Bon Bons Palette - Retail Value $49
How cute is this palette? I love that each shadow is a little heart. It has 16 matte and shimmer shades, "in cool pops of color, sugary brights, and beautiful go-to neutrals." I like that there are so many neutrals in this palette, both warm- and cool-toned, making it versatile, easy to use for every day, in addition to offering some brighter shades to play with when you want a pop of color. You can see swatches of each shadow below. I will say that I'm slightly disappointed in the pigmentation of the darker colors. I'm used to intense pigmentation from Too Faced but the shades like Malted, Bordeaux, and Dark Truffle took a couple swipes and some work to show up as well as I'd like. And even then, they didn't show up in photographs as much I had hoped, as you can see at the end of the review.
When I worked at Sephora I always recommended Too Faced palettes to women who were beginners or wanted to learn to do more with eyeshadow looks because of these look booklets with instructions that come in every Too Faced Palette. They have detailed instructions with a paint-by-number style diagram!
Swatches of the Top Row, shown top-to-bottom, as the shadows are left-to-right in the palette. (Almond Truffle, Satin Sheets, Sprinkles, Molasses Chip, Malted)
Swatches of the Middle Row, shown top-to-bottom, as the shadows are left-to-right in the palette.(Cashew Chew, Cotton Candy, Cafe au Lait, Bordeaux, Mocha, Black Currant)
Swatches of the Bottom Row, shown top-to-bottom, as the shadows are left-to-right in the palette. (Dark Truffle, Pecan Praline, Totally Fetch, Earl Grey, Divinity)
Too Faced Cosmetics Sketch Marker Liquid Eyeliner Pen - Retail $20
I really love this liner! If I use a liquid liner, I'll use a pen liner, and this one works very well. I'm happy to see this in this mystery bag because I actually didn't know about this line of liquid markers from Too Faced. It comes in a literal rainbow of color options which is fun. The color is very opaque and doesn't bleed, and the tip ends very fine and gives me lots of control and precision. It's also nice that it's blue and not black because I have more than enough black liners, and this blue is very dark and subtle and I kind of really love it. (You can see swatches below)
Too Faced Cosmetics Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick, Chihuahua - Retail Value $21
This is a very pretty neutral shade! These Melted lipsticks from Too Faced are meant to offer "the intense color of a liquid lipstick and the high shine of a gloss in one long-wear formula." To be honest, I personally think they're okay liquid lipsticks. They don't dry totally matte, but they don't stay the "high shine of a gloss" after they set, either. The long-wear claim is true, and they are comfortable on the lips. The pigmentation is good and opaque, but the formula will show any dry patches. Also, they have a big, fuzzy applicator tip that I don't totally understand; They make it hard to have good control and get a super-precise lip line. I like these, but they're not my favorite liquid lipsticks. This color is very nice, though! I think it would work with just about anyone's coloring.
Too Faced Cosmetics Melted Matte Liquid Matte Long Wear Lipstick, Granny Panties - Retail Value $21
I haven't used Too Faced's Melted Matte lipsticks before, and they sent a very unique shade in this mystery box. Granny Panties is a grey-purple and I liked it so much more than I thought. Depending on the light, it can look just grey, but I can see myself wearing this a few times this season. I don't think it's a shade that will be in a lot of people's comfort zones or preferences, though. I predict that probably quite a few of these will go up for swap on our swap site so if you're interested, keep an eye out there!
Too Faced Cosmetics Better than Sex Mascara, .17 oz (Deluxe Sized) - Retail Value $12
I love this mascara. I've used it on and off for years. I'm always happy with the length and volume and don't find that it clumps or smudges by the end of the day. It's designed to be built up with up to 3 layers for maximum effect.
Here are swatches of the eyeliner (top), and then the Lipstick in Chihuahua, and then the lipstick in Granny Panties.
Here, I'm wearing the eyeshadow, liner, mascara, and the Granny Panties lipstick.
Here's that same look, but with the Chihuahua lipstick.
A look at my lids - I just did a typical everyday look for me, using Almond Truffle on my lids, Mocha in my crease, and Malted very lightly in the outer corner.
Here, I'm wearing the Bronzed Chocolate look. For this look, you apply Satin Sheets from crease to brow. Then, blend Mocha upward into crease and smudge along lower lash line. Then blend Molasses Chip onto your lid, and finish with Bordeaux on your outer corner and also to deepen your crease if you want. As you can see - I found the darker colors a little difficult to get to be very bold, ones that I would use in the outer corners. With a little more work, or maybe a very slightly damp brush or finger, you'd be able to achieve a more dramatic look. The pigmentation could be better in the dark shades. (I'm wearing the Chihuahua lipstick here.)
Of course, I had to try the dramatic Bon Bon Babe look! Again, I wish the purple shade, Black Currant, would have had more intense pigmentation but after going back over it a couple times I got it to work well enough.
For this look, sweep Divinity from lash line to brow. Then, apply Black Currant to the inner and outer corners and smudge into tlower lash line. Press Totally Fetch onto the center of your lid (I used a fingertip for this). Sweep Almond Truffle into the crease to blend, and finish by dabbing Divinity into your inner corner.
Verdict: All in all, I'm very happy with this year's Too Faced Cyber Monday Mystery Bag! I love Too Faced's Palettes and like that they always send one in these bags. The whole box retails for $42, and the palette alone sells for $49. So to me, it feels like you could look at it as buying a good palette that I really like and getting some great full-sized extras (except for the mascara, which I do wish had been full-sized). The total value adds up to $123, which is the promised retail value.
So, trying to objectively look at this mystery box, I’m honestly happy. I got $123 of product for $42. I just wanted to address all that because of readers’ varying responses to the spoilers. There’s a lot of factors and hype and subjective opinions and established makeup collections that all play into how you personally feel about this year’s mystery box and whether or not you’ll use the products.
