Birchbox x Kiehl’s Customer Favorites Kit Review
Here is the info sheet for the products included.
Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate, 0.17 oz – Estimated Value $13.67 (buy the 0.5 oz version for $41)
This is an undereye treatment formulated with 10.5% ascorbic acid, which is better known as Vitamin C. This is designed to reduce fine lines, brighten, and ultimately eliminate dark circles by strengthening your undereye capillaries. I didn’t see any drastic results after a few uses, but this is one third the size of the full-size version so I am going to keep using it. This didn’t irritate my eyes or the sensitive skin, either.
Midnight Recovery Eye, 0.05 oz – Estimated Value $3.70 ( Buy the 0.5 oz version for $37)
This eye cream is made with hydrating powerhouses like squalane and jojoba seed oil, but I wasn’t impressed to see alcohol denat pretty high up on the ingredient list- over time alcohol can actually dry out your skin more and cause issues. I am not a fan of products that have alcohol at the top of their ingredients (hydrating and skin-safe fatty alcohols are a different story), but especially when it is supposed to be a hydrating product for sensitive skin! This foil sample provided enough product for two separate uses and the skin around my eyes wasn’t irritated, but I wouldn’t repurchase this.
Rare Earth Deep Pore Daily Cleanser, 1 oz – Estimated Value $4.60 (buy the 5 oz version for $23)
I have tried and enjoyed the rare earth deep pore mask from Kiehl’s, so I was happy to try this cleanser from the same product line. It is made with kaolin clay and diatomaceous earth, but this also has alcohol denat listed as the fourth ingredient. It does the job as a cleanser but I won’t continue to use it due to alcohol being so high up on the list.
Midnight Recovery Concentrate, 0.14 oz – Estimated Value $6.27 (buy the 1 oz version for $47)
This is a great night oil that I have seriously been considering purchasing in the full-size since I have seen the holiday packaging of this product on sale. It has no bad ingredients like alcohol in it, and instead, it is packed with goodness like rosehip oil, Squalane, evening primrose oil, jojoba seed oil, and lavender oil. I don’t really pick up on any lavender scent, and my favorite way to use this is actually mixed with the Ultra Facial Cream for hydrated skin that isn’t greasy.
Ultra Facial Cream, 0.25 oz – Estimated Value $4.74 (buy the 0.95 oz version for $18)
This is a basic but great moisturizer that mixes well with other skincare products (like the oils) for the perfect skincare for you. This is fragrance-free and hydrates with ingredients like squalene and apricot seed oil.
Daily Reviving Concentrate, 0.14 oz – Estimated Value $6.27 (buy the 1 oz version for $47)
This is a hydrating oil made with ginger root, tamanu, and sunflower seed oil. If you’re like me and have a t-zone that gets oily during the day, I would recommend mixing this oil with your moisturizer rather than layering it- you get the same skincare benefits with no greasy feeling!. I enjoyed the way this left my skin feeling after using, and will gladly use up this entire sample.
Ultra Facial Overnight Hydrating Mask, 0.10 oz – Estimated Value $0.83 (buy the 4.2 oz version for $35)
This is a deeply hydrating sleeping mask that would probably be too heavy for me in the summer but works great during these colder months. Squalane makes an appearance on the ingredients list again, as glycerin.
Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol-Free Toner, 1.4 oz – Estimated Value $5.83 (buy the 8.4 oz version for $35)
If Kiehl’s knows alcohol is bad in toners, why is it included in some of their other products? Hard questions aside, I enjoyed this toner. This does have actual calendula flower petals inside, so it was a little weird when I started to use it and out popped a petal, but overall this is hydrating and soothing to my skin.
Verdict: This was a great kit to try out various products from Kiehl’s, but it was a little concerning to see how often alcohol popped up in ingredient lists. Overall, though, I am happy with the items included, especially for the price of the box. I calculated a total value of $45.91, which I think is fair for the $23 cost of the box ($18 + $5 shipping).
