Cocotique “Restore & Renew” January 2019 Review
This month’s Cocotique "Restore & Renew" box is a Coconut Restore takeover. It includes a collection of Coconut Restore moisturizing and nutrient-rich hair care products. The entire collection is free of sulfates and parabens. The Cocotique info card describes the month's theme and invites you to connect with Cocotique on their social media platforms.
The back of the Cocotique info card describes all the products included in this month’s box and provides information on where to purchase the products online. I really appreciate when boxes make the extra effort to provide this information.
Coconut Restore Cream Conditioning Cleanser Co-Wash, 2 oz – Estimated Retail Value $1.23 (Buy full-size for $7.99)
Coconut Restore creme conditioning cleanser is a co-wash that cleanses and conditions hair without stripping it of moisture. It contains coconut oil, shea butter, and babassu oil which hydrates and protects hair. The texture of this cleanser has a lot of slip and is not too thick or too thin. I’d probably need the entire bottle of this sample to cover my natural hair.
Coconut Restore Styling & Setting Gelee, 2 oz – Estimated Retail Value $2.00 (Buy full-size for $7.99)
This coconut oil infused styling gelee helps define and elongate curls, provide hold and, protect hair from humidity with no flakes or frizz. It sounds like the making of a great wash-and-go! That was my go-to style before my hair was long enough for a ponytail.
Coconut Restore Curl Control Leave-In Conditioner, 6- 9 ml packets – Estimated Retail Value $1.99 (Buy full-size bottle for $7.99)
This curl control leave-in conditioner protects hair from humidity and leaving it soft and full of body. Coconut Restore says that this conditioner contains specialty polymers that bind to hair fibers to keep them in place without flakes. It can be used after shampooing or as a daily conditioner on dry hair. I applied it to a few-days-old twist out and it left my hair soft and moisturized without being too shiny or greasy.
Coconut Restore Coconut Cocktail Curl Mousse, 7.5 oz – Retail Value $7.99
This curl mousse defines waves and curls leaving them moisturized and frizz-free without any crunchy or flaky residue. The coconut oil in this mousse helps protect dry hair from breakage and the moringa oil helps to control frizz and add shine. I don’t have waves or soft curls. I have coily hair and mousse does nothing for my tight coils.
Coconut Restore Triple Butter Moisture Cream, 8 oz – Retail Value $7.99
This triple butter moisture cream is a blend of my three favorite kinds of butter: cocoa, mango, and shea. It gives hair moisture, definition and control, and leaves hair soft and shiny. I really like this moisture cream. It has the right texture and smells the best out of all the products in this collection.
Coconut Restore Moisture and Shine Mist, 1 oz – Estimated Retail Value $2.00 (Buy full-size for $7.99)
This shine mist is perfect for adding shine while rehydrating and refreshing curls. Formulated with coconut and jojoba oils, this lightweight mist can be used daily to keep frizz at bay. My hair color is dingy, even when moisturized, so I have a hard time finding products that will make my hair shine. This shine mist did the job! But, it's really oily. It reminds me of the oil sheen in the blue can from my childhood. I'll use less but I'm definitely adding product one to my beauty arsenal.
Coconut Restore Revitalizing Whipped Coconut Oil, 2 oz – Estimated Retail Value $2.00 (Buy full-size for $7.99)
This product is just extra virgin coconut oil. Since it's whipped, I find that it's a bit softer than my regular food grade coconut oil. It smells great compared to the other products but otherwise, I don't find anything special about it.
Coconut Restore Cashmere Hair Softening Tonic, 2 oz – Estimated Retail Value $2.00 (Buy full-size for $7.99)
This hair softening tonic claims to improve hair texture and manageability. I don't know how you can "improve" hair texture without chemicals but there are products that are effective in making hair more manageable. This product claims to soften hair and contains interesting ingredients like cashmere extract, peony flower extract, and polymers.
The Verdict: I don’t tend to like takeover boxes and Cocotique’s last takeover box in November was super disappointing. I love when a box offers a variety of specially curated items in line with the month’s theme. Takeover boxes are the opposite of that for me. I did enjoy that this box included many of the products for the Coconut Restore line of hair products. I was pleased with the products I tried. However, I didn't like the smell of the products. My go-to hair care products smell so delicious and these don't smell like much at all. Black hair care products can be so expensive! I appreciate the $7.99 full-size price of these products. My favorite items were the leave-in conditioner and shine mist. My least favorite was the mousse which unfortunately was one of only two full-sized products in this month’s box.
This Cocotique beauty box costs $25 with free shipping. I estimate the retail value to be $27.20 which is not a great value at all. Last month’s estimated value was over $80 and included more products. This month, there were only two full-sized products and all the rest were $2.00 samples. This price point left room to include more full-size products like the shampoo and conditioner which was surprisingly missing from this box.
