Julep January 2019 Review

Julep Maven January 2019 - Julep Letter

This box doesn’t come with an info sheet due to the customization of the boxes, but this month we did get a letter apologizing for the delay (usually this box arrives in the middle of the month, but mine was delivered on January 26).

Julep Maven January 2019 - Julep Insert Front View

We also got an insert with more information on the Boost Your Radiance oil, which was the product that caused the shipping delays.

Boost Your Radiance Reparative Rosehip Seed Facial Oil, 1 oz – Retail Value $36

Even though I have combination skin that leans oily, I love facial oils. I appreciate the extra layer of hydration they can provide, and they’re usually extremely soothing if my sensitive cheeks are acting up. The ingredient list on this oil is fabulous, too- rosehip seed oil, bergamot oil, Vitamin E, and shea butter ethyl esters. I thought this was a great night time oil, but it would probably be a little too heavy for morning use unless you have dry skin. I also love adding drops of facial oils to my moisturizer at night, and another way to use them is by adding a few drops to your face mask to keep them from drying out your skin (if it is a clay mask) and adding extra moisture.

Julep Omelia, Full-Size! Retail Value $14

The polishes released for the month of January weren’t calling my name, so I decided to customize what colors I received. First up is Omelia, a gorgeous eggplant purple glitter with a stardust finish. The stardust finish is similar to the Zoya Pixie Dust finish in that it is a matte, gritty texture. A topcoat takes care of that if you're looking for shine (like I usually am). I had no issues with the application, and after two coats this was perfectly opaque.

Julep Maven January 2019 - Julep Susanna Front 1 Julep Maven January 2019 - Julep Susanna Front 2

Julep Susanna, Full-Size! Retail Value $14

Susanna is a gold holographic glitter topper that goes absolutely perfect with Omelia. If you really had the dedication you could make this an opaque glitter with a makeup sponge, but honestly, that would be a waste of polish. Susanna has gold chunky glitters with holographic sparkles, and one coat is the perfect amount of glitter for my tastes.

Julep Maven January 2019 - Julep Swatch 1

Here are Omelia and Susanna swatched, with no topcoat.

Julep Maven January 2019 - Julep Swatch 2

Here is Susanna topping Omelia on every nail, with a top coat on top. I love how sparkly this is, and these are also my school colors!

The Verdict: I think this is my favorite box from Julep yet! I absolutely adore the nail polishes I selected, and I really love that I am able to customize my box each month to ensure I am getting exactly what I want. Trying out the facial oil was fun, too, and I will be using it as part of my nighttime routine during these colder months.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. You have to sign up by the 20th to get the next month’s box. Then on the 24th, you’ll be able to sign into your Julep Maven account and select the items you want for your box!

I’m a sucker for anything labeled a mystery box and I’ve never met a bath bomb I didn’t like.

I’ve tried to subscribe. None of your links or the link in my account on the site take me anywhere I can sign up. I have written them and, so far, havent heard back from them. 🙁

I tried to cancel online or at least delete my credit card info but they won’t let you without inputting a new and verified credit card number. So I emailed and hope they respond before they charge again (I’ve been on a 3 month plan). I hope they stick around; their mystery boxes were fun.

I called the number on the My Account page, it’s all automated, I pushed whatever # to cancel, left my name, email address associated with the account, and my phone number. 2 days later I recieved an email saying my account had been canceled. Also if you’re worried about them charging before you can cancel you can always ‘skip this months box’ (which is what I’ve been doing the past 3 months 🙄) hope this helps!

My box still wasn’t shipped by the 29th because of a nail polish issue with one of the January colors. I’ve never had issues with Julep in the past two years, they are extremely timely with their shipping so this scared me that who ever used to be in charge is gone. I cancelled my January box when it was past the 20th and there wasn’t even a new collection and the only new skincare item was already sold out. They refunded my box without issue and I’m hoping at the end of Feb things will be back on track.

Wonder why they are offering a free box if they are going under??

I emailed re the late January maven box and they replied but stated the reason was that Ness (boho glam) was late to arrive from the supplier. Funny how the enclosed letter gives a completely different reason. With this and the financial problems, I cancelled (maven since 2012). Truth is if the company was growing as they are leading us to believe, they wouldn’t be in bankruptcy.

I haven’t gotten my box yet. I did get an email saying it was b/c of one of the nail polishes that I picked that wasn’t in yet. I had no idea they were having problems. I had signed up for 3 months and this is the last of those 3. I’m not sure if they automatically re-bill me or not…

Jeannette

They will automatically re-bill you. So you should go to your account and check it out.

Tracey

Thanks, I’ll check it out!

I had no idea the company was having issues. I love this subscription. I really hope they don’t go under. Looks like I should probably use my points now.

I absolutely love the facial oil. The scent is so woody to me. I layer it over the lux hydrating cream which I also love.

Unfortunately, I just re-subscribed. I forgot about the 20th-24th selection and didn’t get a notice about it and I can’t find on their site what I am receiving. I always enjoyed Julep.

Heather

I’m having the same problem. I can’t find where they sent an email reminding us of the selection period so I was charged for February.

Jennifer Metz

I emailed Julep about signing up and they apparently are no longer taking new Maven subscriptions:

Hello Jennifer,

Thank you for reaching out to our Julep Beauty Advisors. We’re glad to hear that you’re interested in joining us as a Maven! Our teams are currently working to improve the Maven subscription program so unfortunately, we are not currently accepting new subscribers.

We hope to have a new program up on Julep.com soon and apologize for any inconvenience. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

The Stardust line is my favorite Julep polishes. They last so long but are in turn a pain to get off. Definitely gotta soak the cotton pad and let sit for a bit before rubbing. I have every color i could get since being with them for 3 years now. Still wishing i could get the teal stardust one.
And i know many have seen delayed shipping and other problems with this bankruptcy filling but i have not yet. But i also fully customize my box and usually dont get any of the featured monthly items. This month (february) i did order the new cleanser and am super excited to try it. I have been pleased with almost every Julep thing i have tried with the exception to the pressed serum/moisturizer. Their eyeliner is my favorite and own every color. And that rosehip oil is one of my favorite oils been using it for 2 or more years.
I really hope they work out any of their issues as i would be super sad to see them go.

I find it very odd that MSA has not yet written anything about the apparent demise of Julep — the parent company is bankrupt, almost all their employees have been fired, they didn’t have a new collection this month (although how could they, really, I doubt anyone is left on their R&D team), and the cracks are obvious in their emails/customer service — they could barely accomplish this month’s Maven boxes. All this points to Julep dying in the VERY near future. Why is no one talking about this? Ladies, I suggest you stock up on your favorites before they disappear.

The parent company is bankrupt and Julep is relocating. Relocating a company literally across the country isn’t easy. I’m rooting for them and I think it’s too soon to call this a “demise”.

Reply ButtonReply

Melissa

Exactly, KS. Some people seem to be getting ahead of themselves here, and to expect MSA to give us information isn’t that realistic since they probably don’t know, either. Google it if you want to know more. All I know is that the company that bought them, Glanasol, filed for bankruptcy. The same company also owns Laura Gellar and some other beauty company.

The silence is deafening.

I have been waiting to subscribe to this, just needed to pare down the number of boxes I get monthly. Guess I will wait and see if they can continue!

Thanks for the heads up.

Hey Jessica, just wanted to say that I love your reviews!
Also want to say a few things about Julep. I have been a maven since Dec 2013. In December my box didn’t get here until the end of the month as well. So Julep went ahead and gave me a credit for a box. I am still waiting on the Jan box because of the rose hip oil.
I just want to say that I feel Julep has gone downhill since the bankruptcy and the firing of employees.
This month did not even have a maven reveal. I have emailed them numerous times and have yet to hear back from them.
I will be sadly canceling my subscription.

Dinah

I have also been subscribed for a long time with Julep, since June 2013. I did receive a maven reveal this month with their new foaming cleanser. Not interested in that. I just received my January box later than usual with the generic “sorry” letter. No credit or free gift as a token of food faith for the inconvenience. I too heard of the bankruptcy filing of their parent company and how they included Julep under their umbrella. That’s really too bad. I’m not going to cancel just yet, in case they have a going away(Of course only if they are really going away) perk for mavens lol.😂

Jessica, you and I have similar skin types. My skin is combo oily and I do enjoy facial oils also. Nice review!

I received susana a couple months ago. At first I was like eh, but I decided to just do the tips with it over a dark blue base. Turned out really pretty, it looked like stars on a night sky. Now I’ll have to try it over a purple!
