Scentbird is a perfume subscription where you choose one fragrance per month. They offer a variety of authentic designer scents and allow you to narrow down by either traditional categories for notes (e.g., floral, woody, spicy, etc.) or more general descriptive terms (e.g., mysterious, classic, flirty). Subscribers also receive a monthly discount code that can be used on full-size bottles of perfume or cologne from the Scentbird shop.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Scentbird January 2019 Review

This month, I received Scentbird’s “Scent of the Month.” You can either opt for the scent of the month or you can fill a queue with fragrances of your choosing:

There was what is basically an advertising flyer for this month’s scent, “Saint” by Kat Von D.

Scentbird January 2019 - Tube FrontScentbird January 2019 - Tube BackScentbird January 2019 - Fragrance

Saint by Kat Von D – Estimated Value $12 (buy 30 mL for $45)

My first thought was: I didn’t know Kat Von D had a fragrance line. My second thought was: is there a “Sinner” fragrance (there is, and it sounds a bit more to my liking – whenever there are fragrance pairs and one is “dark” and one is “light” or some such, it is always the dark one I prefer, e.g. for Versace Crystal Noir and Bright Crystal, the Crystal Noir is my favorite).

Anyway, moving on. This is not bad. I don’t know that I’ll buy a full-size bottle, but I will certainly use up this sample. Base notes are vanilla and musk (yay) as well as cedar (pretty good) and peach (I don’t notice this so much on me). Mid notes are floral, which I am not as much of a fan of: jasmine, almond blossom, and lily of the valley (I am just not a fan of most florals, in general). Top notes are clary sage and mirabelle, neither of which I have a strong opinion about (but in any case, they wear off fairly quickly).

This lasts about the same as any eau de parfum, about half a day for me (maybe a little longer). Sillage is low-to-moderate. In the end, the base notes, especially the vanilla, musk, and cedar, make this work for me, and the florals aren’t super strong. (Do keep in mind that different people’s body chemistries differ and you may pick up some notes a little differently.)

Verdict: The estimated value of my fragrance this month is $12, which is less than the month-to-month cost of the subscription. Your value will depend entirely on what fragrance you choose and if you care to do the math beforehand, you can come out pretty well. For me, though, this is more about discovering fragrances that will work for me, and if they have a bit of a lower value, I can deal with that. I liked this more than I expected and now that I know there is a Sinner fragrance as well, I will be on the lookout for that one.

Please note: Some MSA readers have been having trouble getting their Scentbird shipments on time lately so be sure to read the comments on some of the past reviews to get a sense of what the issues are when making the decision to sign up.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, all you have to do is choose this fragrance for your queue.

Value Breakdown: This subscription is $14.95/monthly and this month, I received $12 worth of fragrance (but again, this is highly variable based on what scent or product you choose).

Ragan, how easy is it to get the palette instead? Is there a change in price? Sadly at 39 I still haven’t found a (real) designer perfume that I’m not allergic to. Even with my 3 allergy meds. I live in Sephora and get Play so I’ve used a lot of perfume.

I remember smelling Sinner in the store a while back and I liked it- deep, spicy…verging on masculine in a discreet way. I also tend to like “dark” scents. If it wasn’t by Kat VonD I might have tried a rollerball size, but I just can’t support that woman’s business.

Yeah, the anti-vax stuff bothers me. Or is there something else too?

Lately I am liking Velvet by Commodity (which I must’ve gotten in a mini with Sephora points because I don’t know where else it would’ve come from).

I cancelled my subscription. I’ve ordered vials of the fragrances I’m familiar with, and they don’t smell like the full-sized fragrances. It’s like there is an ingredient missing or they smell “old” like they’ve been sitting on a shelf for a couple of years. Disappointing.

Does anyone know the source of the smell that is “perfumy” and gives off the heavy “cheap perfume” smell that causes upset stomach or triggers alleries? I’ve been trying to identify what ingredient it is so I can avoid it but havent bewn able to figure it out. TIA!

I don’t have an answer to your question, but anything “flowery” makes me sneeze and bugs me…I’m not sure if it’s subconscious since I do have seasonal allergies and the scent is just tricking my brain or if there is really something in flowery scents that I’m allergic to also. But I stay away from them either way!

Your best bet is to identify which perfumes make you feel that way & look at what’s similar on https://www.fragrantica.com/

If you can’t see a commen factor, it may be something that the scents themselves are mixed into that sets your tummy off.

Best of luck!
