Prime Book Box January 2019 Review
My 2nd-grade daughter is 7 years old and loves reading. We have a wide selection of age-appropriate books for her and we’re always looking to discover new favorites. Additionally, we actively seek out children’s books with diverse stories and characters. We were excited to receive and review this month’s Prime Book Box.
Drum Dream Girl: How One Girl’s Courage Change Music by Margarita Engle and Rafael Lopez – Listed Value $17.99 (found here for $14.83)
Book Summary:
Girls cannot be drummers. Long ago on an island filled with music, no one questioned that rule—until the drum dream girl. In her city of drumbeats, she dreamed of pounding tall congas and tapping small bongos. She had to keep quiet. She had to practice in secret. But when at last her dream-bright music was heard, everyone sang and danced and decided that both girls and boys should be free to drum and dream.
Inspired by the childhood of Millo Castro Zaldarriaga, a Chinese-African-Cuban girl who broke Cuba's traditional taboo against female drummers, Drum Dream Girl tells an inspiring true story for dreamers everywhere.
The author of this book, Margarita Engle is the Cuban-American award-winning author of children’s books and young adult novels. She is the winner of the first Newbery Honor ever awarded to a Latino. Margarita says: “I love to write about young people who made hopeful choices in situations that seemed hopeless”. The award-winning illustrator of this book, Mexican artist Rafael López, brings diverse characters to children's books. Fun fact – Lopez has illustrated seven stamps for the United States Postal Service.
My daughter and I love books that are girl-centered, with diverse characters and unique stories. Drum Dream Girl was a big hit. The poem is so well written and wonderfully descriptive that it pulls you right in. I found my daughter drumming along with Drum Dream Girl and lamenting about the unfairness of the situation. After the story, she asked me if this was a real story and I told her “of course”. We spent the next 15 minutes researching Millo Castro Zaldarriaga online and finding out more about her life.
The Teacher’s Pet by Anica Mrose Rissi and Zachariah OHora – Listed Value $17.99 (found here for $12.59)
Book Summary:
When their class tadpoles are big enough, Mr. Stricter tells his students they can keep just one. The class chooses Bruno, the smallest of the bunch. But Bruno doesn't stay that way for long. Soon, he's grown into a giant, classroom-wrecking creature: he eats desks, he farts for show-and-tell, and he sneezes slime all over everything! With Mr. Stricter blinded by love for the pet, the students must step up and take matters into their own heroic hands.
Anica Mrose Rissi is an author of children's and young adult books including picture books, chapter books, and young adult novels. Zachariah OHora is and New York Times Besting selling illustrator and author of a number of award-winning books. In addition to books, OHora’s illustrations have also been published in magazines and newspapers.
This is a fun book. My 2-year-old son enjoyed this story with my daughter. It's a funny and silly tale that reminds me of The Book With No Pictures in its exaggerated text and "sound effects". The kids love this type of thing if for nothing else than to see my mommy act silly. Into the story, it becomes quite clear that the teacher’s pet is not a frog but the story never clarifies this. So, on each page, the would say loudly “HE’S NOT A FROG!” which was funny to see.
Verdict: The Amazon Prime Book Box comes in its own specially designed book box featuring fun kid-friendly characters. It’s very cute and my daughter gets excited when this box is delivered because she knows it for her. This month’s selections included two very different stories but both great in their own way.
Drum Dream Girl is appropriate for this age group and I highly recommend this book. It’s right at my daughter's reading level and offered up the opportunity to learn new words we don't frequently come across like "rippled, rapped, and rhythms". This book is fun, educational and inspiration Girl Power!
My daughter has mastered most of the language in The Teacher’s Pet but it’s a great book to practice reading with punctuation. There are plenty of periods, question and exclamation marks alongside big and bold words and sounds for emphasis.
I’m still holding on to the hope that Amazon does a little bit more with this box. The inside of the box is empty aside from the books. With subscription boxes, I love to receive inserts describing the theme of the box or the items included. It would have been nice to have a specialize note to the Young Reader, a card highlighting the authors and illustrators of the books included in the box, or fun activities or questions related to the books.
Amazon says:
Prime Book Box saves you up to 40% off List Price, and is always an equal or better value than Amazon's every day low prices. In the event that the books in your box are available from Amazon.com for less than $19.99 at the time your order is placed, you'll receive the lower price automatically.”
The cost of this Amazon Prime Book Box is $19.99 and has a list value of $35.98 ($28.46 using sale prices found on Amazon). This box represents a 44% savings off list price and is a better value than Amazon’s prices at the time of this review.
