Birchbox The Detangling Kit 2.0 January 2019 Review
Here is the info sheet for the box.
Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle, 1 oz – Estimated Value $2.94 (buy the full-size version for $23.50)
This spray didn’t have a size listed, but it is similar in size to the Number 4 serum in this box so I think the 1 oz estimate is fair. This is one of the more lightweight leave-in sprays in the box, and it helped with softness and getting through tangles. If you have fine hair and are worried about leave-in treatments weighing down your hair, I would give this one a shot.
OUAI Leave-In Conditioner, 0.84 oz – Estimated Value $4.65 (buy the full-size version for $26)
My hair loves this leave-in conditioner- it is lightweight but it packs a moisturizing punch. The nozzle sprays out a fine mist that coated my hair evenly, and my hair was much softer and shinier after using. This helped prevent my curls from tangling, too! If you are sensitive to scents, though, this may not be for you- it has the signature Ouai scent that I personally enjoy, but it’s usually a love it or hate it kind of thing.
R+Co ONE Prep Spray, 1.7 oz – Estimated Value $6.40 (buy the full-size version for $32)
I really like the R+Co leave in treatments I have tried, so I was happy to give this one a shot. This is made with aloe, sweet almond protein, and prickly pear extract to nourish and protect against heat styling, brushing, and it worked great when I air dried my curls.
Oribe Run-Through Detangling Primer, 1.7 oz – Estimated Value $10.66 (buy the full-size version for $37)
I was super stoked to try this detangling primer from Oribe- they’re such a luxe brand, but a lot of their products like their dry shampoo and their texturizing spray don't work for my hair. This spray lived up to the hype! It has the classic Oribe scent, the spray is very lightweight, and my hair soaked up the moisture. I definitely noticed fewer tangles after my hair dried, which is what my goal is for my hair.
Number 4™ Super Comb Prep & Protect, 1 oz – Estimated Value $4.77 (buy the full-size version for $32)
This was another great, lightweight leave in that provided shine and moisture to my hair. I liked it, but I am not sure it performed well enough to justify the higher price compared to some of the other lower-cost products in this kit.
Davines OI All in One Milk, 1.7 oz – Estimated Value $12.67 (buy the full-size version for $34)
This was my favorite product discovery in the box- it made my curls absolutely shine, and my hair felt so nourished after using. This definitely is a bit heavier compared to some of the lighter weight products in this kit, but if you have thick hair like me it will work incredibly well.
Spornette Swizzle Brush in Gold – Retail Value $11 (on sale here for $7.98)
This brush isn't specifically a detangling brush, but it has zigzag bristles that are designed to minimize hair breakage and static. This would be too firm of a brush to use on my hair that hadn't already been combed through (my haircare routine includes using a wet brush in the shower while conditioning), but I like it for brushing through my hair once the major tangles are out. Plus, the metallic gold color is a lot of fun!
The Verdict: This isn’t the highest-value discovery kit I have seen, but I can definitely say that I will use all of the products in this box. I can see this kit being a great fit for two people- those who are looking for a new holy grail conditioning spray, and those who have a ton of hair and will use any detangling spray they can get their hands on. The brush was a nice touch, but I think it would have made more sense to include a wet brush rather than one that isn’t specifically designed for detangling hair. Value-wise, I calculated a total value of $53.09, which is a little below the promised value of $60
