January 2019 Brick Loot “Ahoy, Brickmates” Review
Each delivery arrives with a card that details each item in your box. This month, all of the items tie into the pirate theme of the box.
Exclusive! ‘Skull Island’ 100% LEGO® Build Designed by Aaron Newman
The first build contained 51 pieces and a detailed instruction insert explaining how to make Skull Island. This island features a skull that raises and lowers, perfect for hiding your treasures! I love the included palm trees, I'm sure I can get a lot of use out of them with various building scenes!
Included in the kit is a barrel to hold all of your skull island necessities – your pick, flag, and telescope.
Pirate Ship Fleet (set of 3)
These pirate ships were so much fun to build! Each one contained about 60 pieces and detailed instructions. I’m sure that you could mix or match them to create a larger ship if you wanted to do so.
The first ship I built left me with a few extra pieces. I often notice that when I'm following the directions included – sometimes you're missing a piece or sometimes you have an extra. Luckily, typically it's not critical or you can pick something similar from your collection to round out the directions! In this case, you can see that the misstep didn't impact my finished boat.
This is the second ship. I love the pirate flag!
The final ship was probably my favorite of the 3 – I loved the unique billowing sail that it featured.
Pirate Treasures
With a fleet of pirate ships around, we certainly need some treasure for them to find! This set of accessories features a little chest with a lid that opens and closes, some guns, jewels, and even golden chalices. I think one of my favorite parts of this subscription is the little accessory packs included with almost every box!
One-Eyed Willy 100% LEGO® Minifigure
Each month, a 100% LEGO custom mini-figure is created to match the theme. These figures can be quite collectible and retail for $15.00 on the site. Arrrr, one-eyed Willy can sure use his little accessories to protect the jewels on skull island!
Iron On Patch
The last item is a 2" x 4" iron-on patch featuring a brick and the word “SNOT.” I’m racking my brain – but I have no idea what that stands for (if it’s an acronym) – do you?! Leave a note in the comments if you can help this old brain out!
Verdict: I like this box so much that I gifted a subscription to my brother in law for Christmas. The pirate theme is great! I liked the builds, and the theme – especially the little accessory pack and a mini figure. I felt like this box was a very good value – although tough to quantify since some of the items are exclusive to Brick Loot. I paid $33 ($27 + $6 shipping) for this box and received 4 distinct builds plus 2 accessories and a patch. Considering all pieces of equal value – it would be like paying $4.71 per item.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. You’ll find the current available theme in their top banner of the website.

Value Breakdown: Since this box costs $33.00 with shipping, each of the 6 items inside has an average cost of $5.50
