Degusta Box February 2019 Review
Degusta Box always has a really nice info sheet that goes over each item included in the box with their retail values. February focuses on foods you can serve while watching that big sports event. 😉 Let's be honest though... I'll be eating this stuff while watching "The Assassination of Gianni Versace".
The back is different each month. This month features a smoothie recipe for the PBfit packets included this month.
There's a full page add for brand Manitou Trading Company who has two different products in this month's box.
Just Add Dip Packet in Classic Guacamole x3, 1 oz. each - Listed Retail Value $1.19 each (Buy 9 packets for $18.24)
Guacamole is one of the few things I pride myself on knowing how to make well, so I'm a little suspect of this packet. Store bought is never as good as homemade. However, this is simply everything except the avocado which is the most important part. I picked up a couple of ripe avocados from my local Mexican grocery to mix in with this packet since and it was incredibly easy. Texture is a major player for guac enjoyment and since this is using fresh avos, it's nice and chunky even though there was a really creamy element to this. I noticed that this does contain milk which is a bummer for vegans who would normally be safe with guacamole, but I think that's what is making this so creamy. It had some chili flakes in it that gave it a little spice as well, which is essential. My roommate ate most of this and thought it was pretty good for not being 100% homemade. You can always add more ingredients to doctor this up as well, but it's a good jumping off point.
PB Fit Peanut Butter Powder x 3, 0.84 oz. - Buy a 30 oz container for $9.98
Each of the three single-serving packets is made with peanut flour, coconut palm sugar, and salt. I don't know enough about nutrition to know why this is a healthier alternative to regular peanut butter in your smoothies, but I'll guess it has something to do with oil. I've never been a protein powder person, but this apparently has 12 g of protein and 110 calories in each serving. I dipped a finger into the packet and was really impressed by how much it tastes like actual peanut butter. This would definitely be a great addition to a milkshake or other recipe as well, I kind of want to put it in my coffee right now. Is that weird?
Emmy's Organics Vanilla Bean Coconut Cookies, 2 oz. - Listed Retail Value $2.49 (Buy a 6 oz package for $24.95)
Oooh- these little cookies are super moist and dense and taste SO MUCH like a coconut macaroon (my favorite type of cookie). They're organic and gluten-free and well as vegan, which makes me feel healthy. Really impressed by the rich coconut flavor and I can feel the fibrous shredded coconut as well while I chew (which is a bonus). These are excellent little cookies! There are three in the package, so I can ration them out.
They included a coupon as well. 🙂
Manitou Trading Company Piri Piri Sauce Starter, 1.58 oz. - Retail Value $2.99
I didn't get a chance to actually make this sauce, but it certainly piques my interest. The package explains that "piri piri" means "pepper pepper" in Swahili and is a Portuguese classic with an African influence. They suggest using it as a marinade, as a sauce, or a dip. It contains bell pepper, tomato powder, onion, paprika, hempseed, sugar, and garlic among others and is described as having a balance between "bright citrus with garlic and smoky paprika depth" which just sounds amazing to me. The directions are fairly simple as you just need to blend with water, let sit, and then some olive oil. I'll see what I can use this within future recipes! I love discovering new flavors.
Manitou Trading Company Truffle, Parmesan, & Black Garlic Seasoning, 1.6 oz. - Retail Value $4.49
Ummm- one of my favorite things to get in Degusta Box is seasoning! I don't know why but I just love having a whole mess of different things to add to meat, soup, or in this case: POPCORN. I am mildly obsessed with anything truffle (like french fries), so this flavor really excited me. Popcorn is a fave snack in my house ever since my roommate taught how to make it in a pot with coconut oil years ago. My go-to seasonings are nutritional yeast and/or celery salt, but now it is this amazing seasoning!! It's a perfect balance of the three flavors and really just tastes wonderful! I will definitely be trying this on homemade fries or chips next! YUM.
BeanSmash! Snack or Dip in Chipotle Black Bean & Cheesy Pinto Bean, 2 oz each - Listed Retail Value $1.49 each
Each one of these cups contains a serving of flavored bean dip, ready in 5 minutes by just pouring hot water in and letting it sit covered. That is so much easier than heating up a whole can of beans on the stove and adding extra ingredients. Plus, as a single lady, I like a single serving. I tried the Cheesy Pinto Bean flavor and quite liked it! It's just enough of a snack while watching tv with some tortilla chips or as a side to a little Taco Tuesday fiesta. Great idea for portion control for those of us who could also maybe eat three times the amount. 😉
Unique Sourdough Craft Beer Pretzel Rings, 11 oz. - Listed Retail Value $3.29 (Buy 3 bags for $16.00)
I never buy sourdough pretzels, but if they are around I will crush them. They're crunchy and hard but nice n salty. These babies come in ring form which is unique, just as their brand is named. I didn't get a strong beer flavor from these but they're super tasty and hardy and would be really great with a cheese sauce! A great inclusion to this super bowl themed box.
PopCorners in Spicy Queso x2, 1 oz. - Buy 2 7 oz bags for $14.94
I've had PopCorners before and I just don't love them. They're like a rice cake in tortilla chip form but are made from non-GMO corn. They're super light and airy which is not my preferred way to enjoy a chip. The cheesy flavor is pretty good here, but I'm just not into the texture.
Raindrops Candy Taco, 4.06 oz. - Listed Retail Value $4.99
Degusta Box, you are speaking my language. I love gummies. I love tacos. Here we have the ultimate: a true-to-size gummy taco! Each ingredient is a separate gummy treat so this is super fun to eat! There are what look like gummy jalapenos, gummy tomatoes, gummy raspberries (I'll allow it), gummy bears (hmmm), and gummy ropes all tucked into a photo-realistic corn shell package. THIS IS AWESOME.
Verdict: This month's Degusta Box was really fun and one of my favorites in a long time! This one was snack-heavy due to it's Super Bowl theme, but it also included some mixes, seasonings, and even a delicious fun dessert! My favorites were probably the taco, bean dips, pretzels, and truffle seasoning, but all of this will get used up for sure!
