Fair Trade Friday is an organization that helps to empower women and battle poverty through dignified, sustainable industry (craftsmanship). They have three subscriptions to choose from that send fairly traded items from around the world: The Original BoxBracelet of the Month, and Earrings of the Month. I have subscribed to the Earring of the Month box for years now, and I am really excited to have this opportunity to review the Original Box!

Clutch by Glory Haus, USA - Listed Retail Value $28

Look at this cute little clutch! It is cotton canvas with a leather tassel and tag inside. This would be great as a makeup bag, but it could easily stand on its own as a clutch as well. Repurposed on Purpose is a division of Glory Haus that uses recycled leather. I am especially excited about this charity because it is based in my hometown of Atlanta! They work to help women transition out of difficult situations such as homelessness.

Wooden Heart Lip Balm by Kids World Soap & Candle Company, Malawi - Retail Value $14

I don't think I've ever seen such a lovely container for lip balm! How pretty! The lip balm is made of macadamia nut oil, honey, and essential oils. It is very moisturizing, but I have to warn that the smell disagreed with me a bit. Both the balm and the container were handmade in Malawi by locally sourced materials. Kids World Outreach helps to provide sustainable employment for impoverished regions of Malawi.

XO Earrings by Karama Collection, Kenya - Listed Retail Value $22

I absolutely love these earrings! They are brass and were handmade in Kenya. The X and O are so clever and different! The Karama Collection is an organization in Kenya that provides dignified employment for artisans.

The Verdict: I am loving my subscription to Fair Trade Friday Original Box! This month the earrings are definitely my favorite item in the box, but the clutch is great too! Plus I love the little wooden container the balm is packaged in. I also like all the information they provide to show how your subscription directly impacts the lives of others. It makes the subscription seem that much more special.

To Wrap Up:

If I subscribe today, can I still receive this box? No. In order to receive the box of the month, you must subscribe before the 24th of the previous month.

Value Breakdown: This box cost $33 shipped. It included three items, so the average cost per item is $11. The total suggested retail for all items is $64, which means the savings on this box is 48%!

I think the clutch is adorable. I would use it. I also would just swap away items i dont care for not complain about them.

I’m impressed with the balm and earrings but a “clutch”? This is not a clutch. It looks like it’s about the size of a hand, is made of very soft and pliable material, and I’ve never seen a clutch with that shape. At most I might consider this a large coin purse. I find it easier to see it as one of the little Ipsy makeup bags, although it looks like it might be even smaller than those. It’s just definitely not likely to be carried on it’s own as a type of purse. Luckily the balm and earrings make up for it. Love that wooden container!
