Julep Maven February 2019 Review

Julep February 2019 - Info Card Top

This box doesn’t come with an info sheet due to the customization of the boxes, but I did get an insert about the new cleanser that was an option for this month’s box!

Cushion Complexion 5 in 1 Skin Perfector with Turmeric in 110 Porcelain – Retail Value $30

When I saw this concealer as an option this month, I knew I wanted to give it a try over picking the new cleanser. After looking at their shade chart, I thought Porcelain would be the best fit for me. When I first swatched it against my inner arm I was concerned it would be too dark for my skin, but when I applied it to my face and blended it with a damp beauty blender I was happy with how it matched with my skin! This isn’t my favorite concealer, as I felt it settled into my pores a bit. However, I wore this with my Benefit Porefessional primer, my MAC studio fix powder, and my MAC setting spray before some Saturday night shenanigans, and I was happy with how it held up throughout the night's adventures. I don't really know if it brightened my complexion (that is what my highlighter is for!), but I will happily use this. Considering the concealer alone is more expensive than the cost of the box, I think this is a great way to broaden my concealer horizons without having to eat the full cost if it doesn't work out.

Julep Nail Polish in Vibrant Virgo – Retail Value $14 (currently out of stock)

I am always drawn to the specialty collections from Julep like their birthstone and zodiac lines, so I am happy I am able to use my Maven subscription to continue to grab those sparkly, shimmery polishes. I am, in fact, a Virgo, but I think I would love this metallic antique rose gold regardless of what month I was born- it’s gorgeous! I did have a bit of pooling when I applied this in a hurry, so make sure to apply it in thin coats (two should be enough) with time in between for the layers to dry.

Julep Nail Polish in Rosa – Retail Value $14

Honestly, my goal is to own the entire birthstone collection from Julep - they are absolutely stunning. Rosa is an amethyst glitter for the month of February, and it does have a bit of a holographic finish. What this isn’t, though, is full coverage, which is what I was expecting based on the description. This would take a solid four coats to reach full opacity, and thick nail polish isn’t cute on anyone. This polish is best suited used as a topper on top of the color of your choice, though a shimmery purple would look best in my mind. Shown above is with two coats and no top coat.

The Verdict: I am really pleased with my February box from Julep. The beauty of this subscription is the complete customization, so each month I am essentially guaranteed to get items I love. I love that this gives me the opportunity to grab the birthstone polishes rather than being limited to just the new polish releases, and the concealer ended up impressing me, too.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? We recently reached out about new subscriptions and received this response:

Thanks for reaching out! We are currently working on some new updates to the Maven program and in the meantime have paused accepting new subscribers. But we have some exciting featured products planned for our March Maven Collection so stay tuned!

Value Breakdown: This box costs $24.99 and I calculated a total value of $58. That means you are paying $12.93 for the concealer and $6.03 per polish.

I got an email that they are discontinuing the Maven Box and we will lose all our
‘Jules’. Not happy about that as I had enough for a free box.

Julep totally mishandled this. I didn’t even get an email. I logged in to check my box and found that it had been discontinued. Like, excuse me? I was lucky and had ended up using my Jules last month for my box, but I just sent an email about it and how upset I was.

Maven for 6 years and suddenly “Oh yeah, that doesn’t exist anymore.”

I forgot to customize my box. They sent the new foaming face wash and two old black nail polishes. I’m too old/not goth enough for this stuff. It looks like they are dumping out the stuff they couldn’t sell. I will have to watch the date more carefully. Usually MSA gives us notice that it’s time to pick but I don’t think so this month. Maybe I just missed it.

Julep went through bankruptcy and was bought by AS Beauty on the 5th of February, the people who created e.l.f., so I don’t think Julep is going away entirely but I expect changes… maybe the end to this subscription box, but I hope not.

I find it funny how when describing the concealer, taking a pic with your beautiful cat in the background, you talk about the MAC products you use. MAC tests its products on animals. Personally, I dont care how great a product is, if they torture animals in the process of developing that products…. I wont use it. There are plenty of great products that dont test on animals. But I also understand not everyone feels the same way I do.

I appreciate your comment and will be more careful in my choices. Thanks.

If you fully understand that not everyone feels the way you do, then why did you feel the need to comment? No one here needs your lectures or approval. I’m absolutely positive that anyone interested in cruelty free is capable of figuring out which companies are and are not without your input. This is a subscription site that offers many, many box reviews and promotions. Lot’s of them are beauty subscriptions. I suggest you get used to seeing brands that aren’t cruelty free on here.

I received my February box last week. I added on a stick cream blush and a Way Butter lip balm/gloss – I love that stuff and have it in every color. I’ll really miss it it Julep goes away.

I’ve been a Maven for nearly 6 years. Just got my latest box today. Unfortunately, the oils in the Dream Big Nightly Renewal Pressed Serum with BHA (which was one of the featured products) have turned rancid, so the product has a strong spoiled smell, making it unusable. The product is clearly old backstock that they’re trying to move, and isn’t from a recently made batch. (I’ve purchased it before, so I know how it smells when it’s fresh.) I’ve reported the problem to Julep customer service but am waiting for a response. It usually takes them a day or two to get back to me when there’s a problem with my orders, but they’re friendly and helpful when I do hear from them. But I’d warn against buying one of their two pressed serum products right now; you might get an old, stinky product.

Great post!! Sad to hear julep may be on its way out. I stopped subbing awhile back. I have purchased the mystery boxes several times while I love the products I must say it seems every time I buy from julep my bank account is compromised. I do remember them sending some kind of form letter warning of a problem with unsecured data. I don’t wanna think they caused my problems but I definately use a prepaid card to order now.

Watch out with that cushion complexion. I have had two experiences with it: the first was great, which led me to picking it for my box again a few months later. However, with the second one, the little cushioned part separated from the wand within about a week of using it. I reached out to customer service, but never received a response (I guess we know why). I still use the cushion complexion by clicking up the product and putting it on a fingertip for application, because no way am I going to throw it away and waste all that product. It’s very disappointing, though, that the “cushion” can’t be used and that Julep never got back to me.

I missed February selection time because no post on MSA. Was charged and sent a box had no idea content. Was pretty good, though. I got a new Julep product cream-to-foam cleanser, navy smoke eyeliner (fun getting a color other than black or nearly black), nail polish Jean (a deep red). Hope box sticks around. I like the subscription. Will be sad if have to possibly cancel because lack of customer service. I’ve always found Julep to be excellent.

I still haven’t received my Feb box. Normally I receive a box a few days before the end of the previous month.

Jen

It’s the 25th and I haven’t received mine either.

Julep will show up on Fedex Delivery manager under Adanced. I’m still waiting on my Feb box too but it has been shipped.

While I did not take a box this month, I think it is important to note that the allowed RV for the box was higher than previously. I believe in the past, you may have only been allowed one polish in addition to the concealer, for a total RV of $45.

I still can’t understand why no one at MSA is bringing up the parent company’s bankruptcy, the fact that there was not a polish collection in February, and the lack of customer service recently.

Reply ButtonReply

P

I have gotten the cushion complexion in my maven box several times (to try different shades) and each time I was able to get 1 cushion complexion plus two polishes, so I don’t think they’re allowing a higher RV than before.

I just Googled: Julep parent company. The very first article dated the 26th of December mentions they have laid off over 100 people. Yikes.

Reply ButtonReply

Joy

They mainly laid off people who worked in their salons because they closed all their salons.

Jeanine

They also discontinued my holy grail quick dry top coat!!! I am ready to cry!! It dries your nails in 2 min flat!! Granted it chips in 2 days, but who cares because I have so many new polishes I want to try and I like painting my nails (it’s drying them that’s the problem). Lol why julep why

Wendy

Also, stop advertising the free polish as a sign up bonus, as they are not even excepting new customers.
