January 2019 SoKawaii "Kawaii Resolutions" Review
SoKawaii always includes an informative sheet that details the products and an explanation of the theme. I love the adorable sakura petals on the pink paper!
Let’s see what we’ve got to help with our resolutions!
Little Twin Stars Blanket – Estimated Value $25.00
I'm a huge fan of Sanrio characters, and the little twin stars Kiki and Lala are the cutest! This 70cm x 100cm blanket is a thin fleece perfect for covering your lap (I'm definitely doing that; the campus is way too cold ☹) and has a beautiful illustration of the twins resting on the moon with a unicorn. I'm loving the pastel aesthetics!
Sumikko Gurashi KiraKira Canister – Retail Value $6.99
I was actually looking for a candy jar to store the various candies I collect over time. I was especially looking for bowls with the crystal/geometric vibes... and here comes this beautiful topaz-colored jar with an adorable bear face and tail!!
Sumikko Gurashi is another Sanrio character, roughly translating to "life in the corner," commonly found in many stationery and plushie items. Kira-kira means shining or glittering in Japanese, which suits the subtle glitter the crystal cut edges give in this container! (PS: check out the book Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata. It's about a Japanese-American family living in Georgia and is quite a beautiful novel.)
Cute Boar Plushie – Estimated Value $5.00
Wow. I have never felt a stuffed animal this squishy before! It's sooo soft! And, come on. When will you ever see a boar this adorable? Look at it blushing! I actually sent this to my parents' puppy (she's a fan of plushies). I'm happy to see her playing with it, but I do feel a bit bad for the boar since she's quite... ruff... with her toys and it's quite a soft one :))
Hello Kitty Stick Scissors – Retail Value $8.90
There are times when I just really, really need a pair of scissors, but I just don’t bring them with me (partly because the ones that cut really well are too big to lug around).
But! With these, you have miniature scissors that cut darn well (not to mention the adorable Hello Kitty design). They're the type of scissors that cut very sharply with a crisp, clean sound. It's a very cool stationery item, folding them and putting them in the cap (and perfectly fits in a pencil bag 😉)
Unicorn Pen Case – Estimated Value $8.00
I know the unicorn was soo last year, but... I can't say no to these adorable unicorns with unnecessarily long eyelashes. The background pink and the contrasting green felt inside give watermelon vibes and is a must summer case.
My Neighbor Totoro Pencil – Retail Value $13.00
When I was younger, I loved collecting mechanical pencils. Japanese and Korean stationery companies always released series of pencil models I loved (I remember saving up to buy all designs of Pilot Opt Shaker pencils and all colors of the Kuru Toga standard set)
This Zebra Delguard pencil I'm familiar with (I have a black and white!) and is very innovative in design to prevent lead breaking. The design uses 2 springs, both to make the lead slide back in when too much vertical or sideways (extends lead guard) pressure is applied. I thought it was very gimmicky, but you'd be surprised because it actually works! The Totoro design is always welcome on any product, especially when he's jumping with an umbrella!
My Melody Calendar – Estimated Value $4.00
I share my mom's love for My Melody (she's so cute!) and when I saw this calendar, I automatically sent it to her. The date squares are a bit too small to write a lot in, but it's nice to circle important dates.
The colors are all pastel (another mom favorite) ranging from light green, pink, purple, orange, and blue. It's a standup calendar (the backing is made of cardboard) and serves its purpose! It's quite a lovely start to the new year.
Verdict: Wow! SoKawaii did really well in the curation for this month—not a single product went unused, and even got puppy approval! I enjoyed everything from the box, even the vibrant pink tissue paper to the wonderfully soft blanket. The estimated values were based on the Sanrio store prices for similar items, which tend to be very expensive. I estimated a total retail value of around $70.89, which is double the original price! I love the fact that subscribers can experience genuine and limited-edition Sanrio and other Japanese character collector items without paying too high of a price.
