Sweet Sparkle January 2019 Review
Each month Sweet Sparkle includes an info card with an intro to the theme, products sampled and their retail values. This month’s theme is “New Year Glow” featuring 5 makeup products plus one bonus item.
Tony Moly Petite Bunny Gloss Bar - Retail Value $8
Tony Moly always has the best packaging! I love sheet masks and hand creams from this brand, so I was excited to try this Gloss Bar in Juicy Grape. The grape flavor (yes, you can taste it!) reminds me of a purple lollipop, and I love the moisturizing tint left on my lips. Plus, of course, I am excited to have this Petite Bunny by my side!
Bang Beauty Eyeshadow in Mystical - Retail Value $16
At first glance, this appears to be a lackluster pale pink shadow, no bells or whistles, but when I swatched this shadow I was pleasantly surprised; this pot has a white to pink duochrome, and she is pigmented! The texture of this shadow is cream to powder, and I think that is why I had some trouble blending its thicker consistency into other powder shadows. I love the pigment, but it was also a little challenging to layer it for a more concentrated color. She is complicated, but I think applying this after any other shadow is key to getting a better blend.
Dirty Little Secret Baked Highlight in Bellini - Listed Value $15 (Buy here for $14)
Here is another product that seemed a little boring at first glance, but the pinky-purple glow this highlight gives off is an ethereal dream! Bellini didn’t exaggerate or accentuate my pores, and the glow it produced was not stark but subtly majestic.
Hikari Liquid Eyeliner in Fawn - Retail Value $17
This liquid liner has a felt tip that was intimidatingly thick; I was able to get a thin line (like I prefer) by applying this liner very slowly, using only the very tip. I appreciate when receiving any color other than black in makeup subscriptions, so I was happy to see Fawn is a black/brown.
Kokie Cosmetics High Brow Pencil in Blonde - Retail Value $10
Kokie’s High Brow is reminiscent of my beloved Anastasia Brow Definer, and I would have loved it if the color wasn’t so light. I couldn’t see this warm blonde pencil working for anyone with light brown or darker hair, which probably excludes a lot of subscribers. The angled tip makes application so quick and easy, just like the Brow Definer, so I am definitely going to give this a try in my color.
Bonus Items:
I try not to use a lot of fragranced skincare because my skin is so sensitive, but I could not pass this strawberry wonder up. It has a light strawberry scent that didn’t seem to irritate, and my skin felt refreshed and hydrated after leaving it on for about 15 minutes.
Swatches of the makeup (left to right):
Tony Moly Gloss Bar in Juicy Grape (barely visible), Bang Beauty Eyeshadow in Mystical, Dirty Little Secret Highlight in Bellini, Hikari Liquid Liner in Fawn, Kokie High Brow in Blonde
Here is a quick look I did wearing each product. Check out that highlight! The eyebrow pencil made my brows way lighter than I prefer, and the Bang Beauty shadow in Mystical’s texture was a little too thick to blend nicely into a powder shadow. Other than that, I was pleasantly surprised with the Dirty Little Secret Highlight in Bellini, and I could wear the Tony Moly Gloss Bar every day and not get tired of the smell, tint and moisture it provided.
Verdict: Every month I enjoy including each product sampled from Sweet Sparkle into one look, and this month’s (look) wasn’t especially exciting, but I found a few great products making this month’s box a great fit for me.
