The Holo Hookup February 2019 “Gothic Romance” Review
Cupcake Polish in Lament, 15 mL – Estimated Value $13 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup, but check out other holographic polishes from Cupcake Polish here)
Lament is a cool-toned purple linear holo with shifting shimmer that goes from pink to gold. I love the way the pink shimmer comes out and almost looks like a galaxy against the darker purple, and the formula was perfect with two coats for full opacity.
Different Dimension in Twisted Fantasy, 15 mL – Estimated Value $11 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup, but check out other holographic polishes from Different Dimension here)
This is a grey cream holo with purple shimmer and color-shifting flakes. The flakes don't really show up on the nail unless you look super close, but the purple shimmer against the grey holo background is so beautiful! Like all Different Dimension polishes I have tried, this had a great formula with no pooling or patchiness.
Glisten & Glow in Dark & Dangerous, 15 mL – Estimated Value $12 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup. Check out the other polishes offered by Glisten & Glow here)
This is a blackened purple holo with silver flakes. This is probably my least favorite shade of the month- while there is nothing wrong with the formula, the silver flakes just don’t really mesh with the purple polish for my personal tastes.
Baroness X Lacquer in Bloodletting, 15 mL – Estimated Value $10 (this is an exclusive shade made just for The Holo Hookup. Check out the other polishes offered by Baroness X here)
I love that The Holo Hookup always features a guest brand because I get introduced to great indie polish makers. Baroness X is new to me, but I am loving the shade included this month. Bloodletting is a raspberry jelly holo that is fully opaque with two coats even though it isn't a crème! Along with the linear holo, it has red metallic micro glitter, and this had a great, shiny finish even without a top coat.
Here are the swatches. From left to right we have Lament, Bloodletting, Twisted Fantasy, and Dark & Dangerous.
The Verdict: The Holo Hookup is such an amazing box if you love sparkly nail polish. The brands behind the box have perfected their formulas, so each month you are guaranteed amazing holographic nail polishes without having to worry about tricky formulas. The $44 box cost is steep, but I think it is worth it when you look at the unique, box exclusive polishes that are high quality and fun.
