Whiskerbox January 2019 Review
One thing that’s great about Whiskerbox is the items are usually off the beaten path when it comes to cat subscriptions – you don’t see these anywhere else! Let’s see what was in store this month:
This month the information card doesn’t contain a list of items.
Kitty Care Habitat Cleaner (16 fl oz) – Estimated Value $10.30 (found here for $13.49 CAD, on sale for $2.99 CAD)
This is an enzymatic cleaner that can either be used with other products (litter boxes and such) from this brand or any area where cats eliminate. I was going to clean out all my litter boxes this weekend and try it out but we went to five different stores and weren’t able to find enough unscented clumping Tidy Cats to refill all the boxes (I need at least 125 pounds, and not the lightweight stuff, which of course was freely available). Anyway, this is nice to have and especially useful for winter when I can’t attack the litter boxes with the hose and some Dawn in the driveway.
Dehydrated Small Fish Parts
Treats like this always gross me out and it used to be that my cats wouldn’t eat them, but I have recently discovered that Sneaky likes them after all. I refuse to touch these so she got to eat them from tweezers (see below) but that saved my fingers from getting bitten anyway.I rather like only getting a few because, ick.
Denim Cat Costume
You will typically get a collar and bowtie combo, a hand-knitted cat hat, or a full costume each month in Whiskerbox. This month, it is a denim outfit. I was able to get photographs of my three old men (Madison, who is 11, Monkey, who is 12 or 13, and Mr. Kitty, who is 14) in this, and you can see them below. I do not try to put Sneaky and Angus in costumes because it costs me $279 to go to the Urgent Care since I have not yet met my health insurance deductible for the year.
Lightning Bolt Catnip Toy – Retail Value $2.49 (found here for $2.29)
There is usually at least one catnip toy in Whiskerbox (sometimes other types of toys instead). This month it is this lightning bolt with a canvas texture. Angus played with it a lot once I put the camera away (he was a little freaked out because Nyx really wanted to know what I was doing and she was getting a little too close – she didn’t understand why this box didn’t have a dog toy for her). Monkey likes the canvas texture toys, as well.
Here are your kitty photos for the month:
Angus liked this, but between the dog sneaking up on him and him thinking I was trying to give him pills (he has to take prednisolone for his IBD now, he was just diagnosed a few weeks ago), he didn’t play too much while the camera was on.
Madison saw me coming and ran and hid. I had to drag him out from under the bed and take him in the bathroom to take these pictures.
I love how Monkey’s belly fur spills out of every costume.
Sneaky likes these gross freeze-dried fish pieces but I will only touch them with tweezers.
Mr. Kitty was not a happy camper. This outfit makes his legs look thin (well, they are really thin, that’s what happens after 6+ years on a high dose of IBD medicine).
Verdict: I could not calculate a total value for the January 2019 Whiskerbox. The toy and enzyme cleaner together are $12.79, leaving $37.16 for the other items. When I have gotten information cards with prices in the past, the costumes have ranged from $35 to $45, so if we take the low estimate, that leaves about $2.16 for the treats, which is not so out there for premium freeze-dried fish. So I think you are getting a good value. Plus, everything was a hit (not sure my cats liked the costume, but I did…) with us, and this box also includes free shipping to the US from Canada, which is not cheap.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, this was January’s box. Whiskerbox ships on the 15th of the month so if you sign up before then (assuming they haven’t sold out), you would get February’s box as your first box. Also, when the information card says “mystery box,” contents may vary from subscriber to subscriber.
Value Breakdown: At $49.95 for this box, the per-item average value is about $12.49.
