All Around Vegan March 2019 Review
All Around Vegan can vary quite a bit from month to month, but that’s not a bad thing – it allows them to explore a lot of different types of products. Let’s see what they sent this month:
There was a standard information card with more details about the items in the box, including how they fit the categories nutrition, lifestyle, bath/body, and activism. Sometimes there is product literature as well.
Barnana Banana Bites (3.5 oz) – Buy 3 Bags for $14.99
I’ve had these before but I do like them. It is hard to buy bananas and have them last any length of time (I end up with a freezer full of ones only suitable for banana bread). But these are dried (still soft and chewy, though, not hard and not fried in coconut oil like a lot of banana products) and much more shelf stable! You get all of the potassium of eating bananas without the food waste. Also, these are made from bananas that would otherwise go to waste, which is a nice touch. (I am pretty sure I’ve seen these at Whole Foods if you just want to try one package.)
“Vegan for Our Planet” Button
This is the activism item for the month. It would be good for attaching to a backpack or jacket and gets the point across without being too pushy. (Some people are happy to talk to anyone and everyone about veganism, but other people are a bit more reserved, and this would work for either type of person.) This wasn’t available in the All Around Vegan store although it may show up at some point.
Partake Foods Birthday Cake Mini Cookies (5.5 oz) – Buy 6 Boxes for $29.99
These are free of the top 8 allergens as well as a bunch of other things (mustard, sulfites, etc.). Unfortunately, I found them to be kind of dry and crumbly in a way that was hard to get out of my teeth. I think these might be improved significantly if you dunk them in a hot beverage or non-dairy milk.
Nature’s Bakery Apple Cinnamon Fig Bar (2 oz) – Buy 6 Packs for $6
Nature’s Bakery Bars are subscription box mainstays; I’ve been seeing them in snack boxes for at least a couple of years. They are like Fig Newtons only honestly the cookie part is a lot better. They come in quite a few flavors; the berry ones are also pretty good. You can find these on sale at Publix (and presumably other regional grocery chains) every now and then.
EcoDenT Premium Gentle Floss (mint, 100 yards) – Retail Value $5.95
I learned something because of this product – that the wax on most dental floss is beeswax. So if you were looking for vegan floss, here you go! This one has wax from rice bran. (I would be interested in an unflavored option, though. I will use flavored floss but I prefer unflavored.) This seemed effective as far as floss goes and the package contains no plastic and is recyclable. (You do need to keep the package away from water due to the no-plastic thing.)
Dr. Bronner’s Anise All-One Toothpaste (5 oz) – Retail Value $6.49
This product is not for me. I strongly prefer toothpaste that contains fluoride. Also, well, I do not like the flavor of anise. (If you are interested in this product, it also comes in peppermint and cinnamon, which may be more to your liking.) I see this also has stevia, which is another flavor I don’t care for, and menthol crystals, which I am a bit sensitive to, and baking soda, which I often find irritating to the skin and mucous membranes in personal care products. So this was not a good match for me overall and I will be passing it along to someone who will appreciate it more.
“Plant Powered” Natural Tote Bag
Now is the time for me to admit how I actually use tote bags, and why I can always stand to have a couple more. I am a serial starter of cross stitch and loom knitting projects, and at some point, I will go dig out yet another tote and pack my project away and forget about it for a few years. (The newest ones usually see an initial rotation of carrying my heels while I wear canvas shoes to climb the 8 flights of stairs to my office before switching over.) This one seems sturdy enough for my purposes.
The Yes Bar Salted Maple Pecan (1.4 oz) – Buy 6 Bars for $17.94
This product is new to me. It is pretty low in sugar and is free of a lot of allergens (dairy and eggs of course, as well as soy and gluten). It is mostly made up of nuts and seeds and you can tell from the texture, I’d hesitate to call it crunchy but it’s working on being crunchy if that makes sense. The flavor is pretty simple and nutritionally, it’s not bad (some fiber, some protein, rather a lot of fat but they’re healthful plant fats, plus potassium and some iron).
Verdict: I did not calculate a value for All Around Vegan this month because many of the food items as well as the tote and button were not available for individual purchase. This subscription costs $39.90 (with shipping) and there were eight items, giving an average price of about $4.99 each. Obviously, some of the food items don’t cost that much, but there were a few larger food packages as well, and the floss and toothpaste both cost somewhat more than the average. Although the toothpaste didn’t really work for me, the food was generally pretty good (it almost always is, with this subscription) and I feel like this was a solid box this month.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, if you sign up now, you’ll get the April box (ships April 1) as your first box.
Value Breakdown: At $42.45 for this box (subscription cost plus shipping), the average per-item cost is $5.30.
