BarkBox is a reader-favorite monthly subscription box for dogs. It’s one of our favorite subscription boxes, as well – our dog loves it, and we’ve gifted it to dogs in our extended family as well!
BarkBox customizes your box to your dog’s size. For reference, this review is for the small size (our dog weighs 14 pounds). Check out Trevor's recent review of the super chewer box!
My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

January 2019 Barkbox Review
The January box included 2 toys, 2 bags of treats, and a chew - this is close to what you can expect with your monthly subscription, though it does vary everyone once in a while.
It arrives with an information card with details about the items in the box.
They typically include a little something for a photo-op with your pup. Buckles is extremely not into hats, so this was a hard pass from him.
This was the perfect day to post this review, even though it's late (sorry!) because today is Buckles' 12th birthday!
A lot of these items are marked as 'Sold Out' on the BarkBox app - but they have a little 'As Seen In BarkBox' section of the BarkShop where you can grab items featured in monthly themes.
Berserk for Peanut Butter Treats - Value $8
Buckles and I have a few things in common, one such thing is that we both definitely go berserk for peanut butter. I'm a fan of how BarkBox really puts the 'Wheat-Free, Soy-Free, Corn-Free' labels so prominently on the bag - it makes it easy to spot.
He didn't even have time to nudge the bag - he just wanted me to open it already.
Perfectly bite-sized and loved by Buckles.
Quack Na Rok Duck Treats - Value $8
The second bag of treats is a duck, pork, and cranberry medley bite. Like the first bag, these are also wheat, corn, and soy free.
There aren't a lot of treats that he flat out rejects, but BarkBox has been sending these nice little bite-size and soft treats for quite a while now, and they have been perfect for him.
Erik the Red Squirrel - Value $10
Crinkly, furry, and a spiky ball all come together for this little toy.
It's a very good size for a small-medium sized pup. Like many of BarkBox's toys, it has some layers to it - so once your dog tears through the fabric, they'll then have the opportunity to tear through the squeaky, spiky ball.
Jørmüngandr & Steve - Value $10
The second toy is another combo of a squeaker, crinkle, and plush - and it's a little two-headed dragon!
While Buckles played with both toys, I think this one came off as second best this month. Still, it's a good size for small-medium sized dogs like Buckles.
3" Trachea Chew - Value $2-3
Typically, the final item is some type of chew - our dog tends to have stomach issues with a lot of chews, so we tend to shy away from these and gift them to other dogs.
Verdict: This is a really good example of what BarkBox delivers on a monthly basis. As a long time subscriber, it's still a blast to see our dog's excitement when I'm literally just holding the box! We have a lot of dogs in the extended family that makes things easy to gift and share, too.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Customer care let us know that your first box will now always be either their Welcome Box or the current month’s box, followed by the normal schedule the following month.
