BarkBox is a reader-favorite monthly subscription box for dogs. It’s one of our favorite subscription boxes, as well – our dog loves it, and we’ve gifted it to dogs in our extended family as well!

BarkBox customizes your box to your dog’s size. For reference, this review is for the small size (our dog weighs 14 pounds). Check out Trevor's recent review of the super chewer box!

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

January 2019 Barkbox Review

The January box included 2 toys, 2 bags of treats, and a chew - this is close to what you can expect with your monthly subscription, though it does vary everyone once in a while.

It arrives with an information card with details about the items in the box.

They typically include a little something for a photo-op with your pup. Buckles is extremely not into hats, so this was a hard pass from him.

This was the perfect day to post this review, even though it's late (sorry!) because today is Buckles' 12th birthday!

A lot of these items are marked as 'Sold Out' on the BarkBox app - but they have a little 'As Seen In BarkBox' section of the BarkShop where you can grab items featured in monthly themes.

Berserk for Peanut Butter Treats - Value $8

Buckles and I have a few things in common, one such thing is that we both definitely go berserk for peanut butter. I'm a fan of how BarkBox really puts the 'Wheat-Free, Soy-Free, Corn-Free' labels so prominently on the bag - it makes it easy to spot.

He didn't even have time to nudge the bag - he just wanted me to open it already.

Perfectly bite-sized and loved by Buckles.

Quack Na Rok Duck Treats - Value $8

The second bag of treats is a duck, pork, and cranberry medley bite. Like the first bag, these are also wheat, corn, and soy free.

There aren't a lot of treats that he flat out rejects, but BarkBox has been sending these nice little bite-size and soft treats for quite a while now, and they have been perfect for him.

Erik the Red Squirrel - Value $10

Crinkly, furry, and a spiky ball all come together for this little toy.

It's a very good size for a small-medium sized pup. Like many of BarkBox's toys, it has some layers to it - so once your dog tears through the fabric, they'll then have the opportunity to tear through the squeaky, spiky ball.

Jørmüngandr & Steve - Value $10

The second toy is another combo of a squeaker, crinkle, and plush - and it's a little two-headed dragon!

While Buckles played with both toys, I think this one came off as second best this month. Still, it's a good size for small-medium sized dogs like Buckles.

3" Trachea Chew - Value $2-3

Typically, the final item is some type of chew - our dog tends to have stomach issues with a lot of chews, so we tend to shy away from these and gift them to other dogs.

Verdict: This is a really good example of what BarkBox delivers on a monthly basis. As a long time subscriber, it's still a blast to see our dog's excitement when I'm literally just holding the box! We have a lot of dogs in the extended family that makes things easy to gift and share, too.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Customer care let us know that your first box will now always be either their Welcome Box or the current month’s box, followed by the normal schedule the following month.

Eric Cadman – Barkbox said if you contact them, they’ll customize Buckles’ box to not include the chews. My pup has the exact same tummy issues with chews (she gets the “runs”). So they substituted the chews and one toy (she has a lot) with a treat bag!

The double box came in…it was fantastic. Four candy themed toy plushies: candy, bubblegum machine, cookie and a pack with three jelly beans; four treat bags; and two chews – (being donated to a no kill shelter). A superb value for the $22! They answer every single email within 24 business hours.

Hands down…best customer service ever!!! They customize my dog’s box as well! He loves the treats…and he has a sensitive stomach also….but never has a problem with the treats they send! We had a problem with his first box….he couldnt play well with the spike ball toys! Due to some tooth issues (he still has several baby teeth!)…..he would shy away from the harder spike ball toys! I emailed BB…and they now only send the smaller squeak toys that he is able to fetch easier!! His happiness makes my family very happy!! I cant say enough about their wonderful customer service and attention to each detail!! Worth every $

How adorable.
I love Bark Box for my grand fur baby, Nikita Grace. An adorable emotional support Husky for our youngest adult daughter.
Have you tried emailing them and asking to replace the chew with another item since Buckles doesn’t handle them well?
BB has been awesome with getting Nikita the perfect treats and toys. They make her box fit to her perfectly. Because of this, her box is never the standard medium size I see everyone else unbox. So they definitely customize for her.
Happy birthday Buckles.

Happy Birthday Buckles! You look fabulous!!

I don’t know how Barbox does it but every single month they daze and amaze Bam Bam and I. He is a very picky eater and yet he always loves the treats they send and the chew stick was a big hit as well. The toys are so cute and not what you see all over town. They are always the perfect size for my 9 lb Bamy and end up sleeping with us every night. This is such a value to me, I never have to pick out treats in the store hoping he will like them and honestly most aren’t good for him at all.

Happy Woofday Buckles!!!

Barkbox has the best customer service. I’ve been ordering on and off for years. They “customize” my doggy’s box! They asked why I was cancelling (again) and I told them the reason. I wasn’t expecting them to cater, but they sent me an email stating they’ll customize her box.

Happy Birthday Buckles!! You don’t look a day over 5. Love your reviews.

I have 2 basset hounds so definitely medium to large but they get the bite size chews in their box and they are great. I lure them in from the yard with those.
