Gentleman’s Box March (Spring) 2019 - The Sunday Morning Edition Booklet Back

This quarter the theme is “The Sunday Morning Edition” and it contains items that add a little luxury to getting ready during a relaxing morning.

Robe N’ Hood Silk Robe - Listed Value $75

This is a super luxurious and oddly cozy robe (unless you lean against a cold wall). It extends well below my knees as I’m only 5’8”, and is so fancy that I actually feel a little self-conscious about its level of fanciness while wearing it. It seems almost excessive in its opulence, but I can’t deny that it’s incredibly comfy. It’s also so smooth that it gradually opens as you wear it, forcing you to shove it back around your sides.

I love a simple stripe and the varying thickness is a nice touch. These are good quality and soft and would pair well with a French beret and a bicycle.

OMIT Watch - Listed Value $175

This watch looks like it’s a serious chronograph, the kind worn by executives whose hobby is sailing or diving. However, it’s entirely fake. It does tell the time and the date but the two buttons don’t do anything and the extra dials are glued in place. It also does not have the heft or build quality of a $175 watch, it feels quite hollow and the strap has a lot of rattling lateral movement. The strap can also only be adjusted by removing links. It would make a good prop for a play, but it would not be a good everyday watch. I’d be scared the strap would break off at any moment.

It’s nice to get a full sized bottle instead of a sample! I’ve been using this every day since I got it and so far have no complaints. Witch Hazel usually makes me break out but this has not, so it seems pretty gentle. It smells good too, which is usually a good barometer for cleansing products. And it’s of a milky non-foaming consistency so it does not dry out my skin at all.

English Laundry London Cologne - Listed Value $85

I’m not usually a fan of cologne, but this one is quite pleasant. It’s a big bottle (100ml/3.4fl.oz) filled all the way so goodness knows how long it will last, presumably several years. I’m not personally in a position to test its powers but it seems all but certain that it would increase the odds of securing a dance partner in any club.

Verdict: While the robe is great and the consumables will last for a long time, the socks are just socks and the watch is... quite underwhelming. As such it’s hard to say that this is as great a value proposition as the regular Gentleman’s Box. Whereas that features everyday items, it gains value by removing the decision-making process so you don’t have to choose all the socks you own. For special luxury items, choosing to own them is often part of what makes them special.

At $100 and with 5 items, each thing averages out to $20, which doesn’t feel like amazing value seeing as a couple of the items would be that price if you bought them separately. At which point you could also choose not to have the ones you don’t want.

Anyone get the cologne how does it smell? I’m considering this box for my husband minus the watch lol. I would like to see him in a silk robe 🙂

I want to see a pic of Bob accessorizing with blue striped socks and a French Beret riding a bicycle through some mean streets in any metropolis, U.S
A. Loved that thought. You may have a gift for writing! I bet you have been told that, sometime during your life, before. Now I’m curious, do you work as a writer, journalist, editor, or author?

My husband is a freelance journalist who in the past has written for newspapers, typically covering politics and business, once as an editor of a business journal. He used to make a good living freelancing, but long ago when one could make1-2 dollars per word, or 30-50 per inch. The rise of bloggers tanked the pay for freelance journalists and city papers now hire people with Associate degrees in Journalism from Community Colleges. (Please don’t think I look down at community colleges; I took some of the most demanding classes I’ve ever taken at a community college. These classes challenged their students much more than your typical 4 year university survey courses offered to Freshman and Sophomores.) It is just that it used to be that to write for even a small market city newspaper, you had to have a B.A. in Journalism. One could debate whether or not one needs a B.A or an A.A. degree in Journalism, but it has been very hard for experienced journalists to now make less than 15 dollars an hour after taxes.

Sorry for the long digression and selfish expression of my husband’s professional woes, but although I could be projecting, I suspect you understand.

Great review. Next time, we need a beret shot!

Would that I owned a beret! Now I have the socks I’ll be sure to look out for one.

I do not work as a writer, but thank you so much for your kind encouragement!

Thanks for review! I cant believe that a $175 watch had fake dials and all that’s just insane and really not right!

Right!? I’m pretty sure you could get one just like this for $15 at a place that’d repair your phone while you chose.
