Knit Picks Crochet Lover February 2019 Review
Knit Picks is a fantastic online store for knitters and crocheters, and it’s always been one of my favorite places to shop for yarn and tools! They recently launched a line of subscription boxes that feature different products, and although I’m primarily a knitter, I also love crochet and was excited to try this box!
The box included a description card showing the contents of the February 2019 Crochet Lover box. They focus on describing the aspects of the yarn included this month, saying that the cotton and linen blend is “perfect for facecloths, warm weather garments, and gifts for little ones.”
There was a second card in the box that goes into more details on each of the different boxes available. We plan to review a different box type from Knit Picks each month, and we are leaving the choice up to you! Please let us know in the comments below which box type you’d like to see reviewed for March!
CotLin DK Yarn (shown in colors Raindrop, Cashew, and Swan) - Total Retail Value $23.94 ($3.99 per skein)
The box included six skeins of KnitPicks’ CotLin yarn, which is a blend of cotton and linen. Cotton is a traditionally great yarn for crochet, as it holds up well with the thicker crochet stitches and shows off stitch definition well, so I love that they included this yarn in the crochet box!
The yarn has a very smooth ply and has a subtle sheen thanks to the linen content. It’s very pretty! I really love the colors they selected, as well.
Here’s a close up of one of the skeins. The yarn blend is 70% Tanguis Cotton and 30% Linen, and it contains 123 yards in 50 grams. This means that we received a total of 738 yards in 300 grams of yarn. That’s quite generous! It’s also machine washable, which is a huge bonus.
Bobble Washcloths Pattern - Retail Value $2.99
The pattern included in the box is a fun twist on a crocheted washcloth. Washcloths (or dishcloths) are a very classic pattern to crochet, and it’s one of the first things most people make when they are learning how to crochet. They are simple, easy gifts for housewarmings, new babies, etc, and you can never make too many!
Inside the pattern (photo not shown due to copyright), the pattern notes state: “a dense fabric and nubby texture make these cloths great for tough scrubbing.” I think the bobble pattern is so cute and such a fun new stitch to learn!
The box comes with enough yarn to make all three washcloths shown in these photos. I love the different-colored borders!
Radiant Crochet Hook, size G-6 - Retail Value $5.49
The crochet hook included is the right size needed to complete the pattern, which is something that I would expect out of a subscription yarn box but can’t take for granted! The hook comes from KnitPicks’ Radiant line, which is made of laminated birch and features a colorful array of reds, oranges, yellows, and purples. It’s so beautiful! I’m used to crocheting with ugly, plastic hooks and am so happy to have this hook in my collection now!
When I was working the pattern, I also noticed that the tip of the hook has a longer indentation than I’m used to, and I loved this feature of this hook. It made catching the yarn overs a lot easier and I wasn’t dropping stitches like I sometimes do with other hooks! The cotton/linen yarn can be slippery, so this was especially helpful when making this project.
I love how my finished washcloth came out! I’ve been crocheting on and off for a long time now, but I’ve never gotten super comfortable with it the way I have with knitting. I really enjoyed learning this new stitch and practicing my crochet technique with this project, and I love that I can see my improvement from the start of the washcloth to the end!
One warning about this project - I know that I tend towards being a very tight crocheter (I blame stress, haha!), but I still ran out of the blue Raindrop yarn before I was done with the repeats required. I used up every last inch of the yarn, and because of that, I won’t have any leftover to make the blue border around the white washcloth. Luckily, this yarn is fairly inexpensive, so I will easily be able to order more to make more washcloths if I want to! I think these are great for everyday use, or as I mentioned above, they are very thoughtful handmade gifts!
Verdict: I loved my first Knit Picks Crochet Lover box! I think this is a perfect box for someone like me, who knows the crochet basics but is looking to take their skills to the next level. I appreciated learning a new stitch technique, and I love that they included enough yarn to make all three of the washcloths pictured in the pattern.
For $27.00, we received six skeins of yarn, a crochet pattern, and a crochet hook, with a total retail value of $32.42. Knit Picks advertises the boxes as having a $30 value, so this is spot on with what they promise. If you know you are a fan of Knit Picks products, or you want to try new yarn and knitting/crochet items at a discounted price, I think this box has a great value!
