Birchbox Man Sample Box March 2019 Review
I'm having my husband, John, give me his rundown of this box since he is the expert in being a guy. 🙂 Just a quick snapshot of his skin and hair so you can see how these items work for him:
- Face - Smooth, clear, and in great shape considering he does nothing to keep it that way. He had acne as a teen but took Accutane, so no more active breakouts but some scarring. I'm currently trying to convince him how important it is to work on preventing aging before they start.
- Hair - Course and wavy.
Each box comes with a card detailing the month's theme, items included, and some tips on how to use them. Now, on to the items!
Alder New York Clarifying Face Mask Pack, .5oz/14g - FULL SIZE! Retail Value $6
I really like the idea of single-use mask packaging to keep the product fresh and easy to carry when traveling. John usually only masks when I coerce him to, so, having a dedicated mask in his box this month was great. The mud has a pudding-like texture and has enough in the pack to smooth over John's whole face and neck, including his beard area. It only takes a couple of minutes to dry down during which it tingles. After, John's skin looks fresh and bright.
House 99 Skincare Sampler: Greater Look Face Moisturizer, 5ml & Truly Brighter Eye Balm, 3ml - Total Estimated Value $6.87 (Buy 75ml and 15ml full sizes for $25 and $26, respectively)
While I think it's great that a sample kit of products from the same line is included, there is barely enough product in them to test more than once. The eye balm has a pasty texture with a slightly white tint that subtly brightens the skin under the eyes and leaves a super matte finish. The face moisturizer is more like a serum and is hydrating while keeping skin oil-free. It also had salicylic acid in it which helps keep skin exfoliated and breakout free. Each product has a light masculine scent which John enjoys.
Marvis Classic Strong Mint Toothpaste, 10ml/.5oz - Estimated Value $2.40 (Buy a 25ml travel size for $6)
John was skeptical of a fancy toothpaste at first but ended up enjoying the intense herby/minty flavor of this traditional paste. He said he doesn't notice a difference in how well it cleans vs. his regular toothpaste though he does like the decorative design better.
Oars + Alps Natural Face Moisturizer + Eye Cream, .16floz/5ml - Estimated Value $1.41 (Buy a 2.5floz full size for $22)
John likes this all-in-one moisturizer and eye cream because it's lightweight but still ultra hydrating. The alcohol-free formula doesn't burn or irritate freshly-shaven skin and aloe vera calms and protects. I actually really like this too, especially since it doesn't have any scent to it.
thisworks deep sleep pillow spray, 5ml/.17floz - Estimated Value $1.93 (Buy a 75ml full size for $29)
We received a full-size bottle of this before and neither John nor I have been able to get used to it. I think it's the vetivert essential oil that is bothering us. It's just too strong and spicy compared to some of our other sleep aromatherapy products. Loads of people swear that this scent helps them sleep though, so this small sample is a great way to test it out.
Verdict: John's March Birchbox Man isn't as exciting for him as some of his previous months, but it does have a couple of strong product in it. He likes the toothpaste and the Oars + Alps moisturizer. However, the pillow spray is a no-go and he's a bit disappointed in the House 99 sample size. Actually, everything seems pretty small this month compared to previous months' samples. I estimate a value of about $18.61 for this box. That's a little over the cost of the box, and though it isn't as high as normal, part of the value of BirchBox Man is exploring new products without much risk.
