The Spring 2019 Beauty Report Box Review
Here is the info sheet for the products included.
Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Solution, 8.33 oz – Retail Value $9.90
I love micellar waters, and this is a great one. It is nothing fancy, but it cleanses your face without needing water and it doesn’t leave a residue. I like using this in the mornings as a quick cleanse rather than fully washing my face, and it also does a good job of removing sunscreen and light makeup at the end of the day.
Derma E Vitamin C Concentrated Serum, 2 oz – Retail Value $24.50
Once I saw that this vitamin C serum was coming in the box, I pulled out the sample of it I already had and have been using it consistently to give you guys a better idea of how it performs. Before switching to this, I was using the 111Skin Vitamin C Booster that came in my Ipsy Glam Bag Plus, and even though that vitamin C is more than 5 times the cost of the Derma E version, I haven’t noticed any difference in the brightness of my skin (to be fair, I think that says more about 111Skin though). I love how affordable this is, and along with being great for brightening your skin vitamin C is great for fighting sun damage (that is why it is recommended to be worn in the mornings under sunscreen). Since I do not have any dramatic hyperpigmentation issues with my skin, I think this Derma E serum is the perfect vitamin C for my needs in terms of what vitamin C I should use regularly.
GrandeLIPS Hydrating Lip Plumper in HibisKiss, Full-Size! Retail Value $27
I was a little nervous for this lip gloss. The Beauty Report boxes don’t always send wearable GrandeLIPS shades (the brand is a frequent flier in this box). I was pleasantly surprised, though - it provides a light wash of pink color, but it is mostly translucent. I don’t think the pink will show up at all on darker skin tones, but you can definitely still get the lip plumping effects. I find these lip glosses to be effective at doing what they claim to do, but I don’t personally use them because I ALWAYS get a new pimple right on my lip line whenever I try a plumping lip gloss.
Here it is swatched.
Hello Activated Charcoal + Natural Dragon Fruit Whitening Fluoride Free Toothpaste, 4 oz – Retail Value $6.99
The plain minty version of this toothpaste is actually my favorite. It feels weird to have a favorite toothpaste, but this is the best toothpaste I have tried for noticeably whiter teeth. I think it is accurate to call the mint and dragon fruit flavor “minteresting,” but it doesn’t taste bad and it gets the job done on making my mouth feel refreshed.
Hask Biotin Boost Thickening 5-in-1 Leave-In Spray, 6 oz – Retail Value $6.49
I have noticed my hair thinning out in some parts of my scalp, so I am all about the thickening! This is made with biotin, collagen, and coffee extract, and it adds a small boost of volume at my roots.
Koh Gen Do Pure Cotton Pads, 10 pads – Estimated Value $2.50 (buy 60 pads for $15)
Fancy cotton pads? Sign me up. I knew these were upper echelon when I saw they were sold at Nordstrom (and this was the only item in the entire box that wasn’t full-size). These are made of 100% pure woven cotton that hasn’t been chemically treated, bleached, or dyed, and they are seriously the plushest cotton pads I have ever seen. They look (and feel!) like a cloud! I love anything that makes me feel even more bougie, and these fit the bill perfectly.
Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Triple Detox Shampoo, 5.4 oz – Retail Value $28
I think Living Proof as a whole is a reputable haircare brand, and I am impressed with this shampoo. It is designed to remove buildup from the three main causes (product, pollution, and hard water), and it gives a thorough cleanse of my scalp without making it feel drier - impressive for a detoxing shampoo! I have an especially dry scalp, and I was happy with how gentle and effective this was for me. I have used samples of this before, and I am happy to add the full-size to my arsenal.
Lovely Skin LUXE Brightening Gel, 1 oz – Retail Value $99(!!)
I got some pretty noticeable sun damage under my eyes when I started using retinol and brought it too close to my under eyes, especially since my glasses magnify the sun. Along with switching to an eye cream that has SPF in addition to my regular SPF, I was hoping that this would provide some good results considering the high price tag and rave reviews. This is very concentrated, so the directions say to use this only as a spot treatment as the very last step in your nighttime routine. The very first time I used this I experienced a tingling (not burning) sensation on the spots that I applied it that lasted for about 10 minutes, but the next time I applied it I hardly noticed any tingling at all. My dark spots aren’t completely gone, but I do feel like I have already seen improvement in my skin.
NeoStrata Foaming Glycolic Wash, 4.2 oz – Retail Value $40
This came in a previous Beauty Report box, but since it has been a while since I’ve used it I gave it another try. Proper exfoliation is important when using a retinol (which I do), so I was hoping this AHA cleanser would help my skin look its best. I found it too drying for my dry skin for everyday use, and that made sense once I looked at the ingredients list and saw Alcohol Denat listed pretty high up. This is a pass for me, but it may be helpful if you have oily skin.
Ode Natural Skin Care Olive Oil Body Balm in Citrus Oro, 2 oz – Retail Value $20
This body balm is a blend of olive and jojoba oils with beeswax and vitamin E. The texture is thick and luxurious, and I like the way it nourishes thicker skin like my elbows and knees while not being so heavy that I can’t use it on other parts of my body. The scent is a citrus blend of grapefruit, rose, and peppercorn, and I find it to be absolutely delightful.
Purlisse Green Tea + Vitamin C Brightening Sheet Mask, Box of 6 – Retail Value $36
I get a ton of sheet masks for review, but there is still something that makes me feel extra fancy about receiving an entire box of sheet masks - I love it. These sheet masks fit well and were cooling to my skin, which is exactly what I needed after applying the Lovely Skin brightening gel for the first time. I would have worn this mask for longer than 20 minutes, but it didn’t have enough serum.
SiO Beauty SiO Eye & Smile Lift, 4 patches – Retail Value $29.95
These are a frequent item in the Beauty Report boxes, and I just can’t get behind them. For best results, you are supposed to wear them overnight, but with no moisturizer over or under them. I definitely don’t think forgoing my nighttime skin routine will help my skin in the long run, but these definitely don’t stick well if you apply a moisturizer.
Tizo AM Replenish SPF 40 Untinted, 1 oz – Retail Value $41
This moisturizer with SPF is made with 16% zinc oxide, ceramides, and vitamins C and E. I was impressed with how it sank into my skin when I applied it - it wasn’t hard to rub in like some sunscreens, and it left my skin looking smoother and feeling softer (with no white cast). Even though I have about fifty sunscreen options scattered across my apartment, since receiving this one this is the one I have been reaching for every morning.
The Verdict: The Beauty Report boxes always have incredible values, and this one was no exception. I am really loving that 12 of the 13 items were full-sized, and the sample sized item was the fancy cotton pads. My favorites from this box were the Tizo sunscreen, Living Proof shampoo, and the Lovely Skin brightening gel, and I calculated a total value of $371.33. That is insane for the $40 box cost!
