A Little Touch of Magick April 2019 Review
I am always excited to see what this box has in store for me:
The box came with this information card listing the items and retail values. Since the items were unbranded, I used these values when writing the review.
Most of the time, the story comes in a little booklet like this. They vary quite a lot in length and theme. This one has a changeling theme. I did guess the twist at the end but it was a pretty obvious clue in the story.
Canvas Traveler’s Sling Bag – Listed Value $35
I have some out-of-town visitors coming in the next few months and they always want to do touristy stuff, and this is much more convenient than my massive purse for the zoo or aquarium or botanical gardens, so even though I don’t travel much, it will be put to good use. There is enough room for a wallet or card case, some lip balm, some Kleenexes, and a phone, and lots of small internal pockets with zippers.
Violet Beaded Bracelet – Listed Value $18
I like the matte finish on these beads. This is strung on elastic so it will fit a variety of wrist sizes. Sometimes I do like to just stack some stretch bracelets like this and I have some other purples that are similar but not quite the same that will make for an interesting stack.
Musical Card – Listed Value $5
Just to be clear, “musical” refers to the image on the front of the card (i.e., this card does not *play* music when opened). You’ll get a blank card nearly every month with this subscription. Although the cards match the theme of the box, overall they make for a nice collection of cards to keep on hand for thank you notes or graduations or birthdays as the art is always pretty and I can usually think of the perfect person to give the card to.
Bamboo Flute – Listed Value $12
I annoyed the heck out of my husband with this. I actually did manage to make it play about 4 different notes. Nyx seemed to think it was a dog toy. I guess the sound was really interesting to her. (It scared a couple of cats.) This ties in nicely with the story and this has to be the only time I’ve ever received an item like this in a subscription box.
Otherworld Portal Filigree Necklace – Listed Value $35
This necklace also fits nicely within the story. It does not have a super long chain like some past necklaces from this box although the pendant part is fairly large. I have several solid-colored dresses and sweaters that this will look good with.
Lochellen’s Pashmina Scarf – Listed Value $40
You’ll get a lot of scarves, shawls, wraps, and so forth with this subscription. It’s a way for them to include apparel while still making sure to accommodate different body shapes and sizes in their subscribers. (I’m sorry I was unable to model this one for you, but my face was all red and streaked with tears because I had to have Mr. Kitty put to sleep and I wasn’t dealing with it very well.) Moving on, this feels really soft and luxurious. I don’t think I currently have much in my wardrobe that matches, but I will keep these colors in mind and be on the lookout next time I am browsing dresses because this is quite nice. I guess I could also always try it with a basic black dress and see how it works.
Otherworld Springtime Sugar Scrub – Listed Value $8
A Little Touch of Magick typically includes a bath and body item. About every other month it is a bar of handcrafted soap, but you will also sometimes receive scrubs, bath salts, and similar items. This month it is a sugar scrub, which I think is honestly my favorite type of bath and body item to receive. The box included a card with the ingredients listed, as you can see above. This smells somewhat herbal from the basil, mint, and thyme, but there are also some floral notes. It does quite nicely evoke the atmosphere I imagined for this month’s story.
Bonus: Marigold Seeds
These also figure prominently in the story. They remind me of something from my childhood, too. My grandpa helped me plant a little patch of marigolds in the backyard when I was a kid. I took care of them quite well and then one day we needed some serious outdoor plumbing work done and my little patch of marigolds got plowed over by a piece of heavy machinery and I was so sad. Anyway, I will plant these in my backyard, away from the sewer line (!) to have a little memory of my grandfather.
Bonus: Mini KIND Granola Bars x 2 - Buy a 30-bar variety pack for $23.75
This was a second bonus item. These are nice because they’re big enough to make you feel like you are eating something relatively substantial, but they have only about half the calories of a regular KIND bar due to their size.
Verdict: I calculated a total value of $153 for the April 2019 A Little Touch of Magick. Granted, I did have to use all values from the information card, so it seems a bit high, but even so, it’s about three times the cost of the subscription and is a good deal even if you cut it in half. The bag will come in handy this summer and the pashmina seems to be very high quality. I love scrubs and I think the other items are all unique and fun, as well.
I also think there is something to be said for curation here. Opening this box isn’t just about the items (which were all lovely), but there is also an element of experience here, helped along by the story. I can tell that a great deal of thought has been put into it, from sourcing the items on down to the careful packaging. It’s also like opening a whole bunch of little gifts! It was easy to see how the items fit the story this month, too (as usual!).
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? This was the April box. Your first box would come in May or June, depending on the time of the month you subscribe and whether they have inventory left. It sounds like they ship out throughout the month as orders come in.
