Beauty Heroes is a natural beauty subscription box that focuses on quality ingredients for $42.95/mo. Each month they send you one new full size “hero” product in the face, body, hair or sun care category accompanied by "deluxe sidekicks". To me, this subscription is synonymous with the word luxury and combines natural and high-end beauty together. I found this delivery to be extremely unique, so keep reading to find out why!

Beauty Heroes May 2019 Review feat. Ayuna

On the back, there's a little more about the brand and more about Beauty Heroes' loyalty program.

Ayuna Velo 6-in-1 suprastratum protection

Ayuna Velo 6-in-1 Suprastratum Protection, 1.6 oz. - Retail Value $156.00

Here we have the hero of the month: Velo ("veil" in Spanish). It's hard to put a label on this product since it seems like it's doing a lot of different things. Although they don't call it a BB or CC cream, that's probably the closest thing it comes to and easiest to understand what you do with it.

After cleansing and using The Facial (more about that a little later), this lightly tinted cream should be smoothed onto the face for a soft even tone. For oily skin, they say this can be used right after cleansing, but if you have very dry skin, it's best to use a moisturizer first and then Velo. I'm a little on the oily side so this works for me in lieu of my beloved (and now discontinued) Dr. Jart Dis-A-Pore.

This not only delivers mineral UV protection, but also includes vitamin E, argan oil, olive oil, postbiotics, and marshmallow which all work together to bring moisture, repair damage, and plump the skin. The scent of this cream is unlike anything I've ever smelled. It's fruity, yet vinegar-ey and I quickly became obsessed with it.

The cream itself is super thin but has the slight tint you can see above that gives a delicate helping hand to even out skin tone. After applying, I am quite literally glowing even though it ends with a nice matte appearance. This truly does seem to elevate my skin in a very new and wonderful way.

Ayuna The Facial (low)

Ayuna The Facial (Low), 6.8 oz. - Retail Value $96.00

Now for the accompanying "sidekick" product: The Facial. There are two variants (high and low) which have different pH strengths. They only sent out the low version which has a pH range of 4.2 - 4.5. I'll be honest- I have no idea what that means, but please enlighten me in the comments below if you can tell me!

back of Ayuna The Facial (low)

Like Velo, The Facial is unlike any product I have ever used and is hard to fit into a category. It's used like a toner, as in: after cleansing, but has a lot more going on. This product is water-based, oil-free, and includes a prebiotic (apple cider vinegar), probiotic (Lactobacillus Ferment), along with a slew of other ingredients like raspberry extract, coconut extract, and others.

Ayuna The Facial (low) with cap off

You have to shake the bottle up to mix everything before squirting the thin milky product out onto a cotton pad. You then take the soaked pad and wipe it across your face and neck. The vinegar smell hit me immediately which was shocking at first, but then you get the sweetness of what I assume to be the essential oil ingredients gurjum balsam, holy wood, myrrh, chamomile, rosemary, and buchu. Like Velo, I quickly became very obsessed with the scent. The formula left my skin feeling very bright and clean and set me up with a great base to add the Velo cream.

Verdict: Beauty Heroes has blown my mind once again with two products that are super unique and super new to me. I now know the wondrous sweet yet tart smell of their products and can't wait to use them until they run out (especially since I need to replace my BB cream!). Using them together really made my skin feel revived and glowing, so whatever post/pre/probiotics are going on in here are working! As usual- their featured brand is dripping with luxury and makes me feel like a million bucks, only the cost of this box was $42.95 compared to the $252.00 retail value.

Hi Marne! So far all of the Ayuna products I’ve tried (all from Beauty Heroes) have that same wonderful scent. (Minus the vinegar tang, that is.) A while ago BH included a travel size Cream II and it quickly became my favorite nighttime moisturizer of all time, partly because of that rich, sweet scent that I find impossible to describe.

Beautypedia and it’s sister site has a lot of info on ph – they say the best ph for exfoliating is between 3-4, anything lower is too harsh for skin and anything higher won’t exfoliate. Although it seems like a small difference the steps between numbers represent a difference of 100 fold!!

I’m concerned the ‘low’ has too high a ph and would have prefers the ‘high’ with its slightly lower ph that’s in the range, but, I’m definitely going to give it a try and hope for the best!!

Do you think the tinted product would work on darker skin tones?

Reply ButtonReply

Beauty Heroes

Hi Katy,

We love this product for dark skin tones because it has a tint to it, and leaves no ‘white caste’ on the skin. To make it just a little more friendly – add a pump of your foundation, just to add a slight more bit of tint. It’s a lovely product – we hope you enjoy it. And let us know if you have any additional questions.

That’s a great question, Katy! While I can’t be 100% sure, the product itself doesn’t call out a shade, nor does it have others available so I think it does go on sheer and the color you see in the photo smooths out to a super slight glow. Hope that helps!

Laura

I have been watching this box for several months now, but haven’t quite committed to signing up for 3 months, as I already have active Mintdbox, Clean Beauty and Boxwalla subscriptions (which are all on the more expensive side) but OMG, I think I will finally take the plunge with this month’s box! I have heard nothing but raving reviews about the brand Ayuna, and this box offers two of their products for essentially 80% off! Eeep! *^___^*

Upon researching the “low” & “high” versions a bit, the low is definitely the gentler of the two & is recommended to start with, especially for anyone new to acids, &/ or for those with more sensitive skin. It makes sense that they would have opted to send this version as more people will be able to use & enjoy it, whereas the “high” version might be too strong for some. On the flip side even those who can & do use stronger products can make good use of the less intense option.

That does seem like a good move on their part. Thanks for chiming in, Melissa!

So excited for my box to arrive later today! This is my third month w/ Beauty Heroes & I absolutely love it. l may take a few months off, either after this month or after another three, but only b/c I really need to work through what I have. I am certain I’ll be back as I love the opportunity to try some great new (to me) brands & very much appreciate their quality va quantity approach!

We are so happy you are enjoying our service. We try to have a really good rotation of products so you are discovering a lot of different types of products. And we are so glad you are enjoying quality over quantity with us!! Hero On!

Luna

I ended up gifting this whole box to my mom. I still have the low The Facial from a BE LE box that featured it, and after seeing some reviews of Velo, not only was I confused with what the product actually was, but also depending on the reviewer’s skin type and what types of products were used under & over it, pilling would sometimes occur. I’m too lazy to play around with it to see how it works best for me (lol), so I gave it to my mom who is far more experimental than I am when it comes to trying new things. 🙂

Beauty Heroes

Hi Luna,

We are so sorry to hear that this months discovery was not a hero for you. We have been testing VELO in house, and have not yet experienced the pilling that a few people have mentioned, even when layered over and under other products, so we aren’t sure what is causing that to happen. We hope that you mother enjoys this discovery, so nice of you to share!

Marne Orenich

That was very kind of you, Luna! I’m sure your Mom appreciates your “laziness”. Haha!

Luna

Oops, that should be a BH LE box (I think I still had Beauty Expert on the mind. lol)

kate

As far as ph goes, the lower ph values ( anything under 6) are better at preventing bacteria from growing on your skin and preventing acne, and protecting the acid mantle of your skin which helps prevent moisture loss.

Thank you for this info, Kate! I’m always learning so much from our readers!

Becca

This review really piqued my interest in purchasing this box! It truly does seem very unique when which is kinda a welcome change for me. Does the Velo have an SPF rating? I noticed it says it provides mineral UV protection and I wonder if it’s enough to layer over my retinol cream.

Callmeinge

I was also wondering about that…
Thanks for asking, Becca & thanks for the helpful explanation, Kate!

kate

Because of regulations they can’t call it a sunscreen in the US, but in Europe it has an UVB SPF of 30 and a PA +++ rating in japan. credit omgbart dot com for his review

Melissa

Thanks Kate! After a quick glance at the ingredients i presumed that was the case but you saved me the additional research. Much appreciated!🔆

Marne Orenich

Thanks so much, Kate!! V interesting!

Becca

Thank you! That’s super helpful. I currently use a similar SPF so this looks like a win.
