Birchbox Man Sample Box April 2019 Review
I'm having my husband, John, give me his rundown of this box since he is the expert in being a guy. 🙂 Just a quick snapshot of his skin and hair so you can see how these items work for him:
- Face - Smooth, clear, and in great shape considering he does nothing to keep it that way. He had acne as a teen but took Accutane, so no more active breakouts but some scarring. I'm currently trying to convince him how important it is to work on preventing aging before they start.
- Hair - Course and wavy.
Each box comes with a card detailing the month's theme, items included, and some tips on how to use them. Now, on to the items!
Anthony Blue Sea Kelp Body Scrub, 30ml/1 fl oz - Estimated Value $2.37 (Buy a 355ml full size for $28)
This body scrub isn't very gritty. Instead, it's more like a body gel with tiny grains of sea salt that give a light buff. It rinses away clean and leaves John's skin feeling fresh but he can't stand the smell. It's a bit powdery for him I think.
CW Beggs and Sons Ultra Moisturizing Cream, 15ml/.5 fl oz - Estimated Value $8.40 (Buy a 50ml full size for $28)
What a great sized sample! I'll admit that I ended up stealing this one from John because it performs as well as, if not better than some of my expensive face creams. It's fragrance-free (but smells nice), oil-free, and is rich without being greasy. John likes that it soothes his skin after shaving and doesn't leave him shiny. I think it's an awesome pre-makeup moisturizer too. The only downside is that the full-size is in jar packaging which I'm not a fan of.
EiR NYC Simple Lips, .15oz - FULL SIZE Retail Value $5
Being the ingredients sleuth that I am, I noticed that the ingredients on this tube say that there is rosemary extract in this formula. The website doesn't list it as one of the ingredients. Aside from that, this is really a simple lip balm that seals moisture into lips and helps prevent chapping. John likes that it doesn't have any taste or smell and that it leaves his lips "normal looking" instead of waxy or glossy.
Kiehl's Facial Fuel Energizing Tonic for Men, 40ml/1.4 fl oz - Estimated Value $2.88 (Buy a 250ml full size for $18)
In January, John received the SPF moisturizer from this line and LOVES it! I'm super happy because it has SPF 30 in it to protect his skin. I was hopeful that since this is from the same line, he'd be all about it too. He does love it but has a hard time remembering to add this toning step after cleansing. It's minty and invigorating, plus it contains salicylic acid to help prevent ingrown hairs.
Oars + Alps Blue Charcoal Exfoliating Oars Bar Soap, 38.27g/1.35oz - Estimated Value $3.15 (Buy a 6oz full size for $14)
This soap is a hit with both myself and John. It smells great and does an excellent job of getting skin squeaky clean. John has normal/oily skin and loves how it rinses completely clean. I love that it removes the layers of lotion I've applied throughout the day – my "gentle" soap often leaves me feeling like I still have a film left – so I like to use it for a deep clean a couple of times a week. It has a slightly gritty texture for a touch of exfoliation too. It does leave blue streaks running down the shower wall as it drains off though.
Verdict: This month, John's Birchbox Man had several big winners! The Oars + Alps soap, CW Beggs and Sons cream, and EiR lip balm are both favorites of John. I'm actually super impressed with how well these products fit my needs too – maybe it's time for me to shop the other side of the aisle! 🙂 I estimate a value of $21.80 for this box. That's a little over double the cost of the box and great considering John has a chance to try new products and has found quite a few of his favorites over the last couple of months he has been getting Birchbox Man.
