CLEAN.FIT Box April 2019 Review
The majority of the items in this box are snacks, but you will occasionally get a supplement or other small fitness item:
There was an information card with more information on the brands and products in the box. There is also sometimes a coupon or some product literature.
Sun and Swell Foods Fruit and Nut Bites, Lemon Coconut (1.6 oz) – Buy a 9-Packet Variety Pack for $30
This item doesn’t seem to be sold separately on the Sun and Swell site but I found it in a variety pack. This is a new brand for me and I am a fan. These were pleasantly fruity and had a good texture and the package size was good for portion control. I would not be sad to see these in another flavor in a future box.
Eat the Bear Not Your Average Cookie, Chocolate Pumpkin Loaf (2 oz) – Buy a Pack of 3 for $8.99
This is another new brand for me and contains minimally-processed ingredients with an almond flour base. I did not have high expectations for it because normally foods that describe themselves that way are kind of, um, rustic, but this was much lighter and fluffier than other almond flour cookies (perhaps because it is vegan and lacks eggs and the only fat is natural, from nuts and seeds?) and actually had a really good texture.
Eat the Bear Not Your Average Cookie, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip (2 oz) – Buy a Pack of 3 for $8.99
I have pretty much the same things to say about this one as the one above. It actually has fewer ingredients, even, and also not a ton of fat (the peanut butter is powdered). I know fatty ingredients like coconut oil are trendy right now but my natural diet tends to be high fiber, low fat, and sometimes super fatty foods sit very heavily in my stomach, so I was honestly kind of glad to get these cookies.
Kalifornia Keto Butter Kookies Baking Mix (7 oz) – Retail Value $7.99
Now here is a product that takes the opposite approach to almond flour as the cookies above. This requires you to add an egg and five tablespoons of butter, so the prepared cookies are pretty fatty and have a little protein but very little fiber. These were OK but probably not something I would buy and make regularly. Keto foods (when they are even vegetarian, which is rare) are always kind of strange to me but I think it’s just because keto is so antithetical to the way I approach food and the way I manage my weight. (But you know, I suppose it does work for some people.)
Nooma Organic Electrolyte Drink, Blueberry Peach (16.9 fl oz) – Buy a 12-Pack for $27.99
This is another new brand for me. I am impressed at how much of this box is completely new for me, to be honest (I have since received another flavor of this in a different subscription box). It’s basically a natural sports drink, with electrolytes from coconut water. The flavor totally covers up the coconut water taste (I am not a fan of unflavored coconut water). I would suggest chilling this before drinking, though.
Motha’ Butta Coconut Butter, Sea Salt Vanilla (4 oz) – Retail Value $5.50
This smells divine and tasted pretty good when I sampled it. I am saving most of it for baking because I am not really one to add toppings to ice cream or fruit (some of the suggested uses). It seems similar enough to coconut oil that it should work as a 1:1 replacement. I do think it would make a good frosting component. Note to the manufacturer: when you list ingredients, they are supposed to be in descending order of weight, so “organic coconut” should be first, not last. (Small food companies aren’t always familiar with labeling requirements and sometimes don’t get this right.)
Multiforce Alkalizing Multi-Mineral Dietary Supplement Powder (7.9 oz) – Retail Value $29.99
This is the one item in the box with which I was already familiar, having received flavored versions in several fitness subscription boxes in the past. As a scientist, I do not buy into the whole “alkalizing” thing, because this will be neutralized when it hits your stomach acid, and your body is pretty good at maintaining a normal pH, anyway (because of homeostasis). However, this has similar ingredients to Natural Calm Plus Calcium, which is a product I do like and sometimes use if I have trouble sleeping or have been getting foot cramps. This does have stinging nettle, which doesn’t have a whole lot of science to back it up, but which is probably safe when taken occasionally. This is sweetened with stevia and I don’t really care for the flavor of that in drinks, but I found that if I mixed it into a smoothie, I could get the benefit of the minerals and not notice the flavor.
Verdict: The April CLEAN.FIT Box had 7 items, which makes the average cost per item about $5. The Multiforce, coconut butter, and cookie mix together are $43.48, which is already quite a bit over the $34.95 cost of the box so you can consider the other items as bonuses. This is one of the best values for CLEAN.FIT Box I have seen, and I was also really impressed that they managed to come up with so many new brands and items I hadn’t tried before.
