Earthlove Spring 2019 Review
This note was included describing the low environmental impact of the packaging used. This is good information, but I can't help but wonder if it weren't best expressed on the website instead of using paper. There is a lot of paper included with this subscription. They should lead by example with their packaging!
The theme for the Spring box is "Potential." This lovely booklet was included with information about the theme and the season. The featured nonprofit this month is the Xerces Society which helps to protect the habitats of invertebrates, such as our beloved pollinators!
This card was also included which lists and details the items included in this package.
This poster from the Xerces Society was also included. It has lots of information about their "Bring Back the Pollinators" campaign, which I personally think is very important. It also has helpful tips inside on supporting your local pollinators.
The History of Bees by Maja Lunde - Retail Value $26 (found on sale here for $13.99)
This is a really good book for a lot of reasons. It's well written and interesting, for starters. It combines a lot of facts and actual history with a great storyline that presents a picture of a future in which the bees have disappeared. It's pretty chilling, actually, and it's something that I think is within the realm of possibility.
From Amazon:
“Imagine The Leftovers, but with honey” (Elle), and in the spirit of Station Eleven and Never Let Me Go, this “spectacular and deeply moving” (Lisa See, New York Times bestselling author) novel follows three generations of beekeepers from the past, present, and future, weaving a spellbinding story of their relationship to the bees—and to their children and one another—against the backdrop of an urgent, global crisis.
England, 1852. William is a biologist and seed merchant, who sets out to build a new type of beehive—one that will give both him and his children honor and fame.
United States, 2007. George is a beekeeper fighting an uphill battle against modern farming, but hopes that his son can be their salvation.
China, 2098. Tao hand paints pollen onto the fruit trees now that the bees have long since disappeared. When Tao’s young son is taken away by the authorities after a tragic accident, she sets out on a grueling journey to find out what happened to him.
Haunting, illuminating, and deftly written, The History of Bees joins “the past, the present, and a terrifying future in a riveting story as complex as a honeycomb” (New York Times bestselling author Bryn Greenwood) that is just as much about the powerful bond between children and parents as it is about our very relationship to nature and humanity.
Reusable William Morris Cup by eCoffee - Retail Value $15.99
I absolutely love this travel mug! I just got it and have already used it several times. The design is just gorgeous, which makes sense since it was originally done by Victorian artist and printmaker William Morris. I also love that it is made from bamboo, which is much more sustainable than plastic. Bamboo grows so fast!
BONUS Tea
These two tea bags from Pukka were included for use in my new mug. The "relax" variety was particularly good because the marshmallow root has a bit of a licorice flavor and a subtle sweetness.
Lemongrass Cherry Matcha Superfood Bar by LivBar - Buy a pack of 12 for $30
Look at all those nuts and seeds! You can tell just by looking at it that it's loaded with nutrients. It was yummy, too! It's organic and free of gluten, soy, dairy, corn, and GMO's. In addition to its title ingredients, it also has pumpkin, hemp, sunflower, and flax seeds, plus dates, coconut nectar, and lots of other yummy wholesome ingredients.
Rosemary Citrus Aura Spray by Mystic Ginger Apothecary - Retail Value $10
This spray smells so good! I love the smell of rosemary; it's so grounding. It's also really good mixed with invigorating citrus scents! The spray is intended to uplift the aura, but it is also really good at just making the room smell nice. It's also great as a linen spray.
Nourishing Hand Lotion by The Farmer's Touch - Retail Value $25
This hand lotion smells so amazing! I think this may seriously be my new favorite hand cream. It is really rich and creamy and thick, but it absorbs quickly. It leaves my hands looking and feeling better and of course, smelling great! The main ingredients are vanilla and fig, which is apparently an awesome fragrance combination! It also has unfiltered cocoa butter, organic almond oil, and other all natural, non-GMO ingredients.
Inspiring Energies Affirmation Deck by Sue Lion - Retail Value $4.50
I appreciate the thought of this inclusion, but it is not something I personally would get much use out of, to be honest. I like all the sentiments, and the artwork is pretty. But again, this deck is about trees. I love trees. The deck is made of card stock. Do you see the conflict?
Grow Your Own Tea Herbal Garden Kit with Lemon Mint by Decker Rd. Seeds - Buy 6 for $20
Fun! I am heavy into planting season now in my own outdoor vegetable garden, so this will be a lovely addition. There is a fiber pot included and a soil pellet for the growth medium. Aside from the seeds, there is also a plant marker. If the plant does well enough in the fiber pot, I will transplant it to a larger one later. I love lemon mint, and it is great as an herb in all kinds of things, not just tea. This is great!
Wings of Jade Boho Headband by Soul Flower - Estimated Value $16 based on similar styles
It looks like this particular headband is sold out, so I am using the value of comparable ones from the Soul Flower website. This headband is so cute! It is just perfect for keeping my hair out of my face while I am in the garden. I absolutely love both the color and the design. It is also made from a 50/50 blend of organic cotton and recycled plastic bottles! I can hardly believe that, awesome!
This coupon for 15% off at Soul Flower was also included.
The Verdict: This was my first package from Earthlove and I absolutely loved it! It is such an awesome subscription! My only complaint is that I felt like there was too much paper waste, which is really against what the box should stand for. Other than that, I was thrilled to receive the headband and the travel cup, and the book is really informative and engaging. Plus the total retail value of everything adds up to $103.32! That's awesome!
