Japan Candy Box April 2019 Sakura Surprise! Review
Word of the month time~ さくら which means cherry blossoms! It’s pronounced “sakura,” our star of the hanami festival of April!
Aww, our cute mascot is taking pictures of the cherry blossoms! He’s surrounded with adorably sassy mochi (*´∀`*)
The box comes with an illustrated info sheet that classifies snacks as traditional, dagashi, kawaii, limited-edition, or seasonal and gives a short blurb of about them.
Shall we dig in?
Cratz Edamame Salted Soy Bean Snacks – Retail Value $3.90
Cratz snacks are known to be nice beer side snacks-- though I can’t try them that way, I will say they are delicious! The roasted, unsalted almonds created a nice balance with the salty edamame cubes. These dense cubes have an almost aromatic flavor (??) and have a nice texture, both crunchy and soft and with only a little salt. So yummy!
Bourbon Petit Black Cocoa & Vanilla Cream Biscuits – Retail Value $2.90 (found here for $1.45)
YAY! I love looking forward to the Bourbon Petit Cookie series in all of Japan Candy Boxes. They’re so fun to eat and the whole series have lovely flavors! These biscuits are the mini versions of a very popular snack around here ;)) I liked the detail of the biscuit design too, and the cream was tasty and not too sweet, matching well with the rich dark cocoa taste of the biscuits.
Kabaya Juicy C Grape Candy – Retail Value $2.20
These are a popular candy among younger children-- they’re like tablets that melt very quickly in your mouth, filling and overwhelming you with the best (artificial) sweet grape flavor! I loved the tube packaging-- kept them in my bag for a quick afternoon sugar rush ♡
Ginbiz Choco Bar Z – Retail Value $1.90
This puffy corn snack reminded me of a powered-up version of the classic umaibo! The perfect balance of sweet chocolate and crispy texture made it a wonderful sweet snack to eat. I recommend dividing it in half because it’s quite a thick bar!
Baby Star Ramen Maru Noodle Snacks – Retail Value $3.90
Perhaps you’ve seen the well-loved Baby Star ramen noodles in bag form? These little crispy bundles of joy are a soy sauce flavored, deep fried noodle-style snack. Perfectly crunchy, savory, and salty!
Ototo Seasonal Vegetable Crackers – Buy a 5pc pack for $3.80 (buy it here for $2.66)
These crackers reminded me of a very popular Korean snack called goraebab-- I enjoy popping these in my mouth because of the light texture that melts in your mouth like butter. The vegetable flavor gives a nice salad and ranch flavor (I’m a ranch girl!)
Kit Kat Iyokan Mandarin Orange – Buy a 12pc bag for $9.90
Lifetime goal: trying every flavor of KitKat available from Japan! This limited-edition flavor is Iyokan Mandarin, a beautiful blend of the citrus and white chocolate that pairs well with the crunchy, iconic wafer of KitKats. This particular flavor is popular with exam students in Japan because the mandarin is a symbol of good luck!
Seika Long Grape Gum – Retail Value $1.50
Japanese snacks have mastered the skill of artificial grape flavors-- I love it so, so much! I was so happy to see such a longgg stick of gum I could enjoy throughout the day. Though I loved the flavor, unfortunately, the lovely grape flavor and chewy gum texture disappeared so quickly T^T
Long Sakeru Peeling Gummy in Mandarin Orange – Retail Value $2.90
Have you ever seen the Long-Long Sakeru commercials? Oh my, they’re hilarious! This snack became popular through hilarious advertisements that went viral. The snack is fun to eat by peeling off the strips, but I wish there was more flavor! The gummy had a nice smell, but there wasn’t too much of a taste and was quite rubbery (⌣_⌣)
Morinaga Chocoball Chocolate Banana Flavor – Retail Value $2.90
This is a new flavor of the iconic Chocoball series in Japan-- a dark chocolate biscuit ball covered in a sweet, banana chocolate layer. When I opened the box, a mouthwateringly tasty banana smell just wafted in the air, and the little biscuit balls were so delicious!
A tad sweet, but still quite a fun and yummy snack. And the packaging was so adorable, it’s a bird beak!
Verdict: This month’s curation of snacks was a colorful variety of savory, salty, and sweet-- I loved having the many long trays and gummy snacks, especially the mini Oreo cookies and little ramen. They were lovely snacks to share with my friends! I do wish there had been some sakura-themed snacks to celebrate the beautiful season (。•́︿•̀。) but I was happy with the fruity flavors!
For $19.90 including free shipping, I calculated an estimated value of $22.10 for 8 of the 10 snacks! I consider the experience of the curation as a large part of the value, but that is just my personal opinion. ♡
