Robb Vices April 2019 Review
Included is a handy booklet with all of our product info. This one is filled with beautiful photographs, in-depth product info, and a huge section dedicated to the Robb Vice Mother's Day shop and discounts.
This month is very much inspired by Japan and includes some Onsen skincare items, a Yuzu fruit beverage, and a beautiful bottle of Soto sake. Let's take a closer peek.
Onsen Secret Japanese Beauty Nuggets Sample Kit
I have always wanted to visit an authentic Japanese Onsen, but since I don't think that will ever really happen I was excited to try these skincare samples from a USA based company that sources many of its ingredients from an authentic Japanese spring. Our little box contains 5 samples of all different formulas, which is a great way to try out this line's full range without making a huge commitment. Included were samples for an aloe cleanser, eye cream, wrinkle release cream, lifting mask, and body lotion. Although Onsen Secret does sell different varieties of these little sampler kits I couldn't find this exact one and it looks like each has a different priced based on the contents you choose and each pack has 7 samples of the same product. Since ours was a mix of 5 samples, I wasn't quite sure how to estimate value, though they can range from $2.95-$19.95 depending on the product you want to try.
Onsen Secret Japanese Hot Spring Mineral Bath, two 1 oz bags - Retail Value $14.95
I love a good salt soak, and this box includes two pouches so I can enjoy it twice! I generally use something like this in either a bath or a foot soak. I was really pleased to open the first bag and find that instead of loose salts, they are contained in some sort of mesh bag, which means less mess and I am going to attempt to use one of the bags twice and see what happens. These smell incredibly 'healthy' and herbal, like a treatment at a very high-end spa. These soaks contain rare minerals (tourmaline and coral!) and plant extracts from an actual Japanese hot spring. Along with being totally relaxing, they also help to detox your body.
Onsen Secret Healing Minerals Body Lotion, 6.8 fl oz - Retail Value $17.95
This lotion has a scent that somehow reminds me of sunscreen, but in a really light and enjoyable way and with an aquatic, fresh element. Formulated with Onsem Secret's proprietary blend of Onsen hot spring minerals, seaweed, shea, rice bran oil, and vitamins A, C, and E, it is really moisturizing, but also super light! It absorbed easily and left my hands feeling velvety and pampered.
Onsen Secret Daily Hydration Moisturize+Protect Cream, 1.7 fl oz - Retail Value $187.00
This cream smells heavenly! This light cream is formulated with peptides, hyaluronic acid (BAE), resveratrol, green tea, aloe, lavender oil, and vitamins A, C, and E. It is very lightweight and absorbs almost instantly, leaving a slightly matte finish which I found perfect for wearing under my makeup during the day. Though it was not heavy enough for a night cream, I really loved that it wore well during the day and didn't interact negatively with my makeup. Though it doesn't contain SPF, I have no problem applying some separately or using an SPF heavy foundation to supplement. I love when luxury creams come in an air-free bottle because it keeps them fresh longer and protects from contaminants.
Yuzu Sparking Beverage - Estimated Value $4.00 (Buy a 3 pack for $12.00)
I thought I would reserve this sparkling beverage to mix with the included sake, but I am impatient and ended up drinking it alone at my desk. I love, love, love yuzu because it is a different kind of citrus, much less "sweet" than oranges or even grapefruit and much more flowery! It has a tart finish that is borderline bitter, but I just adore it, especially combined with the fizzy aroma of the florals. This was really good ice cold and tasted very fresh and healthy. Made with only three ingredients (water, yuzu, and cane sugar) it even tastes pure and minimal, and you can even see little rind particulates floating around inside.
SOTO Sake, 720 ml - Retail Value $44.99
I have only really ever tried sake at a hibachi restaurant and only because the chef kept yelling at me from behind the grill and squirting it into my mouth. While that experience was.. something.. I was excited to try a high-quality sake that I could sip from a cup rather than a squirt bottle. This is certainly some pure sake! Our booklet informed me that this bottle is filled with what is considered to be a Junmai Daiginjo variety, and while I don't know what that actually means in terms of taste, it is considered pretty elite in the sake world. Soto literally means 'outside' in Japanese, and I enjoyed a cup of it in my backyard right after some spring rain. It has an immediate fruity taste and was smooth as silk, only getting a little hot at the very end when swallowed. It had aromas of plums and flowers but was also very fresh and light with a little green in there. The bottle includes a denim cloth that you can use as a coaster, which is great because I recommend it as cold as possible and that often means a sweaty bottle when shared over a meal. I didn't mix this beautiful sake with anything because it was truly so good all on its own. I always appreciate a lovely bottle too, because I keep my bar on my kitchen mantle, so it better be pretty as well as tasty!
Verdict: This Robb Vices was another great one! I love when this box blends skincare and booze, and this month they accomplished this seamlessly, in a way that felt highly curated and very authentically themed. I didn't even know I enjoyed sake until this box, but this incredibly drinkable variety really won me over and makes a beautiful addition to my mantle-bar. I think I might be a sake convert! The skincare items felt very "high-end spa" and I loved every bit of it. The yuzu soda was also delicious and I plan on ordering a few more if I can't find anything similar locally. This box is worth around $268.89 without considering the sample pack. That is a pretty decent value for a $145 box in my book, especially one that was so well curated and contained such special items, though if you didn't love that super expensive cream, you might not be as thrilled as I was.
