Sephora Favorites: Sun Safety Kit April 2019 Review
I love the bag this kit came in- the neon coral really pops with the woven texture, and the tassel zipper is fun.
Plus, it has room for plenty of goodies.
Lancome UV Expert Aquagel Defense 50 Sunscreen, 10 mL – Estimated Value $13 (buy the full-size version for $39)
I liked the way this felt on my skin - it felt like part-primer and part-moisturizer with SPF. Unfortunately, Alcohol Denat is one of the top ingredients, so I won't be using it again. I am bummed because otherwise, this was a nice sunscreen.
Drunk Elephant Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense SPF 30, 15 mL – Estimated Value $9 (Buy the full-size version for $36)
They call this a tinted sunscreen; I call it a BB cream. Either way, I like the soft color correcting this does to my face while giving me SPF 30 protection, and it is easy to apply.
Peter Thomas Roth Max Sheer All Day Lotion SPF 30, .5 oz – $12.35 (Buy the full-sized version for $42)
The sunscreen scent in this was really light (I had to really hold it up to my nose to get the scent), which is what I want from a face sunscreen. This absorbed into my skin quickly and left it feeling soft and ready for the day.
COOLA Makeup Setting Spray SPF 30, 10 mL – Estimated Value $7.20 (buy the full-size version for $36)
This makeup setting spray gives your skin a matte finish while providing SPF 30 protection, and 70% of the ingredients are organic. My personal preferred way of using this is to reapply sunscreen throughout the day without having to worry about ruining my makeup, and this small sample tucks into my purse with ease.
Murad Invisiblur™ Perfecting Shield SPF 30 PA+++, .17 oz – Estimated Value $11.05 (Buy the full-sized version for $65)
This is a really neat sunscreen and face primer combination that feels a lot like this smash box primer when applying. It is non-greasy and doesn’t leave my face shiny.
Dr. Dennis Gross Dark Spot Defense SPF 50, 7 mL – Estimated Value $5.88 (buy the full-size version for $42)
Along with protecting against the sun, this is designed to protect against photo-aging and even your skins tone and texture. This sample is probably too small to really see a difference in the appearance of your skin, but I liked that it applied with ease and left no white cast (extra impressive when you consider this is a physical sunscreen made with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide).
Supergoop Superscreen Daily Moisturizer SPF 40, 15 mL – Estimated Value $11.40 (buy the full-size version for $38)
This is a newer release from Supergoop that is specifically targeted for people who struggle to apply sunscreen every day- no multiple steps needed if it is in your moisturizer! This cream was easy to apply, but it did have a faint sunscreen smell.
Origins A Perfect World SPF 40, 5 mL – Estimated Value $4.50 (buy the full-size version for $45)
I am a BIG origins fan, and I actually already use the perfect word eye cream with SPF every morning! I expected to love this, and I was not disappointed. It smells faintly of white tea and it really doesn’t feel like I am applying a sunscreen! It has a semi-matte finish, no white cast, and it does a good job of hydrating my skin without making it greasy.
COOLA Sun Silk Drops Sunscreen SPF 30, 5 mL – Estimated Value $7.67 (buy the full-size version for $46)
This is a new release from Coola, and I like it. It feels like I am applying a nourishing, watery serum to my skin rather than sunscreen, and it provides broad spectrum SPF protection. This is also supposed to help with rays produced from electronics along with the sun, but I don’t see myself paying nearly $50 for one ounce of sunscreen.
Shiseido Wetforce Ultimate Sun Protection Lotion SPF 50+ for Face/Body, .23 oz – Estimated Value $12.38 (Buy the full-sized version for $28)
This sunscreen is a clear liquid, and it absorbed into my skin super quickly. I would feel comfortable applying makeup to my face after using this, though since it is a water-resistant sunscreen I probably won’t. It has a pleasant scent, but a quick scan of the ingredients doesn’t clue me into what I am smelling.
Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment Sunscreen SPF 15 in Rose, .07 oz – Estimated Value $11.20 (Buy the full-sized version for $24)
Even though this lip balm looks like it is bright red, it provides only a very sheer wash of color that fades relatively quickly. The hydration stays behind, however, which is a big reason this lip treatment from Fresh has a cult following. Sunburned lips are the literal worst, so I will definitely be using this on days I expect to be out in the sun.
Dr. Jart+ Cicapair™ Tiger Grass Color Correcting Treatment SPF 30, .33 oz – Estimated Value $11.88 (Buy a .5 oz. jar for $18)
This color corrector with SPF came in last year's Sun Safety Kit, and it really changed my approach to sunscreen - this was the first sunscreen I was actually able to commit to wearing every day, which wasn’t something I was doing before. It really neutralizes redness and makes me feel comfortable going makeup-free even when my rosacea is acting up. My skin is much happier now, and while I can now comfortably use a wide variety of sunscreens (it is all about forming that habit!), this will always be a favorite.
The Verdict: If you got this kit with no expectations, you would probably be satisfied. A wide array of brands and formulas are included, and each purchase donates $25 to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Objectively, this was a good kit, but I really felt like we were missing a full-size sunscreen like the one that was included last year. I also noticed quite a few repeats that were in last year’s kit, too. If you like having mini sunscreens on hand or are looking for your next holy grail in sun protection, you can’t go wrong with picking this kit up. Value-wise, I calculated a value of $117.51, which is above the promised value of $114 and just about three times the cost of the entire kit.
