International Wine of the Month Club May 2019 Review
When you sign up to join the International Wine of the Month Club and choose the Premier Series Wine Club, you get to choose to receive two bottles of red wine a month, two bottles of white wine or one of each. I choose one of each.
The two bottles of wine are shipped flat in a sturdy cardboard box that has molded pieces to hold them in place. This helps prevent the bottles from breaking. Each bottle also comes in its own wine bag which is a nice touch and makes the delivery feel even more special!
Both bottles arrived in perfect condition. Newsletters, pamphlets and information sheets were also included in the box.
The welcome packet provides a wealth of information about the club, the limited produced artesian wines, how new wines are discovered and the rigorous process of choosing the right wine club selection. Also included were a pamphlet highlighting the six monthly clubs, special deals and discounts for Father's Day, membership FAQs and an opportunity to special order previous month's wine selections.
Let’s check out the boutique wines included in this month’s box. Cellar Notes accompany each wine providing a description of the wine producer, region and varietal along with tasting notes, suggested food pairings, and a recipe!
This month’s white wine is a highly prized Kerner from the award-winning San Pietro vineyards in Italy’s Alto Adige. Kerner is a cross between two varietals: Riesling and Trollinger. Elegant fruits flavors, like freshly picked apples and ripe summer peaches, with delicate spice tones and a crisp finish awaits. This wine pairs well with cold pasta salads, soups, seafood, and light meals. The Italian Wedding Soup recipe highlighted is an example of an excellent pairing for this Kerner.
San Pietro Alto Adige Kerner DOC 2016 – Retail Value $18.00
Country: Italy
Wine Vintage: 2016
Grape Varietals: Kerner
Serving Temp: 40 F
This Kerner has a light smell of tangy green apples. It’s full of flavor but also light and refreshing. It’s not a super sweet white wine, being a cousin to Riesling. I was both surprised and pleased. This is the perfect wine for sitting out on the patio, warm breeze, and a good book. This was my favorite.
This month’s red wine is a bold and full-throttle Zinfandel from a Tierra y Mar single vineyard site in Sonoma County, California. Sonoma is the unofficial birthplace of the Zinfandel varietal dubbed as “America’s own grape variety”. Think juicy and ripe red and black fruits, lush berries, bramble and spice flavors with oak tones. This wine pairs well with spicy Mediterranean and Southern Italian dishes. The Greek Lamb Burgers with Spinach and Red Onion Salad recipe would be a wonderful compliment.
Tierra y Mar El Rio Vivo Sonoma County Zinfandel – Retail Value $17.00
Country: United States
Wine Vintage: 2015
Grape Varietals: Zinfandel
Serving Temp: 40 – 64 F
This Zinfandel smells sweet, like warm blackberry jam, and taste both fruity and spicy. It’s bold and juicy so I can see how it would pair well with flavorful dishes. This is a red that both red wine lovers and those new to red wine would love. This was my husband’s favorite.
The Verdict: I was excited to try these expertly selected and limited-production wines. I loved this month’s selection! We’ve gotten in a bit of a rut with our wine choices lately so my husband and I were thrilled to try the Zinfandel and the Kerner. We were pleased with both. My favorite was the Kerner which I paired with a salmon fillet on top of organic cauliflower and butternut squash stir fry. My husband’s favorite was the Zinfandel which he paired with spaghetti with ground beef and Italian sausage.
We enjoyed learning about the wines as well. International Wine of the Month Club does an excellent job with the Cellar Notes. We learned a ton about the wine producers, region and varietal which made the experience even more enjoyable. There’s a lot of value in the Cellar Notes. Adding to the appeal of this wine club, the chosen wines are rare finds and the panel of experts are essentially ensuring a selection of wines that taste amazing.
The box cost $52.95 ($39.95 + $13.00 shipping) for two bottles of artisan wine with a retail value of $48.00 ($18.00 + $17.00 + $13.00 shipping). That makes this particular month’s selection slightly less than the cost of the subscription itself.
