The Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club June 2019 Review
A detailed newsletter is included each month where you can read about the two featured breweries and the beer that you will find in your box. The newsletter really provides more education on each beer and the background of the breweries, which is awesome. The featured breweries for May are Ellicottville Brewing Company in New York, Sprecher Brewing Company in Wisconsin, McEwan’s Brewery in Scotland, and Aass Bryggerie in Norway! Cheers!
The beers are from all over the map this month, but I’m starting with a brewery that I actually personally know! Growing up, my parents and I would drive regularly up to Niagara Falls to visit my grandma and extended family. I always knew we didn’t have much further to go when we stopped for dinner in Ellicottville, which is a ski-adjacent town with a thriving arts community. The brewery there has great food, and of course, lots of beer! In the box, I found their IPA, and even though I don’t reach for IPAs first when I’m in the mood for beer, I really liked this a lot. At 6% ABV, it’s a little higher than your average beer, but not the highest in the box. It had a pretty pale orange color, lots of foam, and a big flavor! It was perfect served ice-cold from my fridge, and I think it would be great alongside a seafood boil with spicy sausage and tons of Ol’ Bay seasoning.
I’m a big fan of Scotch ales in general, and this award-winner had a complex, caramel flavor that I really enjoyed! There is definitely a hint of alcohol warmth in this, and it was rich with a slightly smoky edge. Sprecher claims to be the original brewery of Wisconsin, and I felt like this “Wee Heavy” was a fantastic introduction to their wares. Most interestingly, this brewery boasts nine non-alcoholic sodas that they make in-house! I could definitely see enjoying this 8% ABV brew with a creamy, smoky cheese fondue with lots of crostini.
Our second Scotch ale in the box was actually from Scotland! I was thrilled to have the chance to sample some international brews in this box, and being able to compare two Scotch ales was a fun exercise for me. This ale was also an 8% ABV, and this type of brew can be really intense, with a strong, almost overwhelmingly boozy flavor, but I found this to have a nice balance of flavors and overall, a more mild taste than its American counterpart. I could see this being amazing with a rich and fruity dessert, like Black Forest cake.
The last beer this month is from Norway! Pilsners can be really tough to get right, and to be honest, I can only be found drinking them in the summertime because they’re so light. They can sometimes lack flavor when not brewed well, but this pils, which is 4.7% ABV, was clean and refreshing with both citrus and grassy notes. The flavor was nice and dry, and to me, is the perfect beer for pizza (as most pilsners are). This would be incredible alongside a pizza made at home, with sweet sausage, red peppers, and ricotta - cooked right on the grill!
All these beers were good for different reasons!
Verdict: I loved the American and European beers I got to try this month from The Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club! It was so cool to do a side-by-side comparison of two Scotch ales; one American and one Scottish, and I loved seeing Ellicottville Brewery in this box! There was a nice variety of beer styles and ABV percentages in the brews this month, and I always love trying new things. This month’s box also marked my first-ever Norwegian beer, and enjoying these in my backyard while I watched my dog run around really felt like the perfect kickoff to summer. Can’t wait for the next box, as always!
To Wrap Up:
Can I still get this box if I sign up today? Yes! You are able to choose which month you’d like to start with (the earliest option is currently June).

Value Breakdown: This box costs $49.95 a month including the shipping cost. I received a total of 12 beers, which is a value of $4.16 per bottle of beer, much less than you would pay for these beers if you ordered them at a pub. Plus, the overall curation, exclusivity of each brewery, and in this case, access to international beers is where I really see the value each month, not to mention the home delivery!
