Papergang is a monthly stationery subscription box from quirky UK design team, Ohh Deer. Each month they partner with a different artist and have a theme to bring you paper goods and desk accessories. Every month's packaging is uhhh-mazing and acts as the perfect preview to the theme of the box. This month's artist is illustrator Jack Carter (@jackcarter_draws), an artist whose bright characters with expressive faces will undoubtedly make you smile.

The flip side of the box always features a cut-out craft. This month we're back to one of Daniel Randle's animals, and fittingly, it's a blue whale!

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Papergang June 2019 Review

Papergang includes a little info booklet each month that matches the box and theme of the contents! Want to take a peek inside with me?

Under the front cover is a list with the contents of this month's box (Box #40). Rather than diving right into an interview with the artist, Papergang is first walking us through a little info about Marine Conservation Society, a program to which £1 is being donated per June box sold. And, good news: they sold out!

This certainly isn't the first time Papergang has paired up with a conservation society, and each time they do, they offer some helpful tips for living a more green life. This page shows some alternatives to single-use plastic!

Now we get to know a little more about Jack Carter. We learn about his process and are gifted with his advice for artists who are new to the industry.

OH MY GOSH this is an announcement for a new quarterly subscription called Artful, which will supply folks with drawing instruments and such. Can't wait to see what it's like!

Here's the usual head's up about their awesome referral program. Find out more info about their referral program here.

Finally, some social links—and I strongly suggest you follow them, Papergang's got a solid social game—as well as a code for 10% off your purchase of cards, stationery, and gifts from the Ohh Deer shop!

A5 Perfect Bound Notebook - Estimated Value $11.40 USD (£8.95)

Who else is so tickled by the tiny faces on Jack Carter's sea critters? The illustrations would be fun even without their grins, but they're all the better as they are. I have to confess that I'm kind of squirmy about any and all sea creatures in real life, but the ocean is so crazy fascinating that I'm all over artistic renditions of them! This softback notebook has my favorite kind of pages: blank on one side and lined on the other. It invites drawings, graphs, and less formally formatted notes alongside the classic structure you might need for lists or to sit down and be serious about writing a few pages. Who else loves this type of notebook?

Enamel Pin -Estimated Value $7.58 USD (£5.95)

Thanks to Papergang, I'm starting to have an extremely fun enamel pin collection. I mean, who doesn't love narwhals? I recently watched a nature documentary segment about them and from beginning to end I just kept saying I can't believe they're real. Such interesting creatures! I'm gonna pop this guy right on my denim vest lapel and it's gonna be awesome.

Stickers - Estimated Value $1.27 USD (£1.00)

Yesss, stickers! I must say, as I was opening this month's box, I was really hoping there would be stickers inside of it. These little dudes would just be so sweet to decorate an envelope with and toss in the mail! My best friend is gonna be so pumped to have these smiling swimmers greeting her in a few days. I only wish there was more than one sheet! Though, I get it, we're adults, probably most people don't need one million stickers like I do.

A5 Art Print - Estimated Value $11.47 (£9.00)

I first heard this saying a few years ago and I think it's just so dang clever. It frames our current climate situation with an appropriate graveness and inspires action. This print has metallic gold bubbles all over it, which is kinda fun. I will say I'm starting to feel a little inundated with prints from Papergang boxes lately—I just don't have enough walls in my house to hang them on! I do keep them filed away, though, if I ever want to frame them and give them as gifts.

2 x Metal Straws - Estimated Value $7.01 (£5.50)

This is the gem of the box. When I heard some clanging coming from inside this canvas pouch, I had no idea what to expect. Imagine my delight! I have been avoiding straws for over a year now and wanting a metal straw for quite some time but never got around to buying one. Now I have three! The Papergang booklet only accounts for two straws, so I don't know if I got an accidental extra or if that was a typo. Does anyone out there with a metal straw think I should get one of those little pipe cleaner doo-hickeys to keep it sanitary? Or is that unnecessary? Hit me with your eco-friendly straw tips!

Bonus: Riso Calendar - Estimated Value $3.47 (£2.75)

Finally, the classic Papergang offering: a riso calendar. They've recently started removing the specific month indication, so you can fill it in with whatever month is useful to you. This is the cutest one we've been sent in a long time!

Verdict: After last month's Papergang box wasn't a great fit for me, we're back in action with colors and designs that I'm all the heck about. I received a notebook, an enamel pin, a single sticker sheet, three metal straws in a drawstring pouch, and a bonus riso calendar, which added up to about $42.20 USD. Super good deal in my opinion, especially since the straws are a useful item in life outside of my stationery obsession! The box is approximately $20.26 (box + shipping to the USA), so I think we can all agree we've got a good value this month!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you'll receive the July box! Check this helpful ship date guide to see the order-by date to receive the next few months' boxes.

You can also get a free box with a 6-month subscription or 2 free boxes with a 12-month subscription!

Value Breakdown: This box costs $13.95 + $6.31 shipping, which means that each of the 5 items in the box (counting the riso calendar) has an average cost of $4.05.

Definitely get the straw cleaner! The grossness that I cleaned out with it after my hubby “cleaned” his straw with a quick rinse was an eye opener!

Oh gosh I can only imagine!

About the straws—I don’t think the scrubby thing is absolutely necessary but probably highly recommended. I don’t own any reusable straws yet, but tbh my family just reuses plastic ones. I just make sure to wash them immediately after drinking so no drink remains can dry up and harden on the inside (and then get all gross and germy!).

I would get one of the scrubby pipe cleaner looking things to clean the straw for sure!

I thought this sub sent cards/envelopes did it change?

Christen Russo

It’s still technically a stationery sub, but sometimes they get creative with what’s included!

I love this month’s box, especially the notebook and the straws. I received three straws, as well. I had one already, and I just make sure to wash/rinse it in hot water right after using – haven’t felt the need for a brush.
