Prime Book Box April 2019 Review
My 2nd-grade daughter just turned eight years old and loves reading. We have a wide selection of age-appropriate books for her and we’re always looking to discover new favorites. We love seeking out children’s books with diverse stories and characters. We were excited to receive and review this month’s Prime Book Box.
Captain Pug (The Adventures of Pug) by Laura James and Illustrated by Eglantine Ceulemans – Listed Value $16.99 (found here for $11.89)
Book Summary from Amazon:
On one very ordinary day, Pug's nose knows that breakfast is on its way. And with breakfast, come crumbs – but not just any old crumbs, jam tart crumbs. Jam tarts are Pug's favorite food, and he loves nothing more than to share them with his best friend, Lady Miranda. But just before Pug can finish the last jam tart, Lady Miranda picks him up and whisks him away for a sea-faring adventure. Unfortunately for Pug, it turns out that water may be his biggest fear!
To avoid the water, Pug takes a well-timed snack break. But when his brief respite takes an unexpected turn, Pug will have to find his true Captain self and steer a path back home.
Author Laura James has a gift for storytelling and uses her dogs Brian and Florence as inspiration for her pug adventures series. Captain Pug is the first in a series of pug adventures which also includes Cowboy Pug, Safari Pug, and Pirate Pug.
Illustrator Eglantine Ceulemans has illustrated numerous children’s books and loves adding humor to her illustrations in a way that touches both children and parents alike.
Pugs are greedy! We would know because we have a pug named Brutus who is equally afraid of the water and my daughter has a friend named Miranda who is a lot less spoiled and pampered than the Miranda in Captain Pug. This was a fun and exciting story. We loved it!
Yaks Yak: Animal Word Pairs by Linda Sue Park and Illustrated by Jennifer Black Reinhardt – Listed Value $16.99 (found here for $13.80)
Book Summary from Amazon:
At once funny and informative, Yaks Yak presents animals acting out the verbs made from their names. Illustrations rich in comic details show hogs hogging, slugs slugging, and other spirited creatures demonstrating homographs, words with different meanings that are spelled and pronounced the same. A chart listing the words, their meanings, and their history is included. Ideal for sharing, this book offers a sprightly and fanciful introduction to a fun form of wordplay.
Linda Sue Park has a lifelong love of writing and has used her passion to publish a number of books for young people including the popular A Single Shard which won a Newbery Medal.
A graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, Jennifer Black Reinhardt started her career at an advertising agency and is now an illustrator and writer of numerous children’s books.
Yaks Yak was fun and educational. I love how the book provided the definition of each homonym. My daughter would say: “Ha! I never knew that word meant that!" This book wasn't fun in the traditional sense as there isn't really a story to be told but it was fun learning new words and seeing animals having silly fun.
Verdict: The Prime Book Box comes in its own specially designed book box featuring fun kid-friendly characters. It’s very cute and my daughter gets excited when this box is delivered because she knows it’s for her. This month’s selections were fun, challenging and educational. Captain Pug is a great introduction to chapter books and had a fanciful tale we both enjoyed. With Yaks Yak, my daughter learned what a homonym is, added new words to her vocabulary and had silly fun. Both books were a hit!
