Winc May 2019 Review
When you sign up to join Winc, you take a short, fun palate profile quiz that helps determine your taste in wine. Based on your answers, Winc makes bottle recommendations for you every month. You can go along with their recommendations, choose your own bottles from their regularly changing selection, or skip the month completely. You can also take the palate profile test as often as you’d like.
The bottles are shipped in an upright cardboard box that has molded pieces to hold them in place. This also helps prevent the bottles from bashing into one another during transport. The box is rather sturdy and has a super handy handle that makes it easy to carry. It’s quite the transportable beauty. A real party in a box, if you will.
Looks like everyone arrived safely!
Here’s a glimpse at the treats that greeted me upon opening the box.
Winc included this beautiful card featuring three sangria recipes with their popular summer wines. I’m always impressed with Winc’s copy and graphic design, and this card was no exception. Though I didn’t receive any of the wines on the card, I'm certainly tempted to select a bottle for next month to give one of these sangrias a go.
These adorable paper straws were also included, so I can sip my chilled wines like a fancy lady. I’m sold.
Speaking of sipping, let’s get into the wines, shall we?
2018 Sauvetage Rosé — $15.99 (or $13.99 through the subscription)
AOP Ventoux, France
Body: Light
Sweetness: Dry
Alcohol: 13.5%
Winemaking: Vegan
Hooray, rosé! It’s that time of year, right? This bottle promises a very fruit-forward flavor, with fresh notes of orange zest, strawberry, and my favorite, peach ring. It was tangy and light, without any bells or whistles. Just a straightforward rosé, and that’s a-okay.
2018 Brethren of the Road Gewürztraminer — $14.99 (or $12.99 through the subscription)
Monterey, California
Body: Light
Sweetness: Dry
Alcohol: 12.5%
Winemaking: Eco-friendly, vegan
Though this white has the lowest alcohol content of all the bottles I received, it has the highest syllable count! I’ve had a few different offerings from Brethren of the Road; some were hits, while others were misses. This one, fortunately, falls into the hits category thanks to a tiny bit of sweetness from the notes of lychee, peach, and white flowers. It’s a lovely, elegant wine that I can see myself finishing in record time, then wishing I'd slowed down to enjoy it more.
2018 The Bluffer Valdiguié — $16.99 (or $14.99 through the subscription)
Paso Robles, California
Body: Medium
Sweetness: Dry
Alcohol: 14%
Crafted from California’s rarest grapes, this red is another fruit-forward offering that can be served slightly chilled. Color me intrigued. Its strawberry flavor was incredibly prominent, almost like drinking strawberry jam—in the best way possible. Plus, its medium body was very welcoming to a light chill. I couldn’t put this one down! If a whole case of these showed up at my house, I would be so delighted.
2017 Folly of the Beast Pinot Noir — $18.99 (or $16.99 through the subscription)
Central Coast, California
Body: Medium
Sweetness: Dry
Alcohol: 13.6%
Winemaking: Eco-friendly, vegan
This is my first pinot noir from Winc, and after seeing it described as “impossibly good” on their website, I was eager to see if it lived up to the hype. At first taste, it reminded me of a very sophisticated grape juice. I can’t remember the last time I had a glass of wine and thought it actually tasted like grapes. Sip after sip, I found myself really enamored with this pinot, and would definitely recommend it.
Verdict: This month’s selections were fantastic! I was really happy with all of Winc’s suggestions, with my favorite being the valdiguié. Plus, I learned a lot in the process. Winc is one of my favorite monthly subscriptions, and after a shipment like this, I can’t help but recommend it highly.
