July 2019 Birchbox 'Customer Favorites' Curated Box #2 Review

There are two cards in this month's curated box. The first is the info card that has all of the samples listed out, how to use them, and the retail price for the full-size versions. The front has a photo of a woman named Ashley that shares her story of embracing her freckles as part of Birchbox's "Love, You" campaign. The second card is a 20% off coupon code that subscribers can use towards Discovery Boxes and Limited Edition boxes in the shop.

R+Co Analog Cleansing Foam Conditioner, 1.5 oz. - Estimated Retail Value $8.00 (Buy full-size 6 oz. bottle for $32.00)

I was unsure what this product even was before I read the info card which explained that it's a 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner foam. That type of product usually doesn't sit right with me but boy was I wrong. I was not expecting to love this as much as I do, but I sit here to tell you that this foam is incredible. It comes out pretty fast, so the first time I used it I think I used a little too much. But it really made my hair easy to comb after getting out of the shower and extremely soft and shiny after blow drying. I can't believe how clean and nice my hair feels after using a 2-in-1 product! I am tempted to buy a full-size and save myself a step in the shower.

Oribe Dry Texture Spray, 1 oz. - Estimated Retail Value $5.18 (Buy the full-size 8.5 oz. for $44.00)

While I love the R+Co foam, it doesn't necessarily give me a lot of volume. That's where this texture spray comes in! After spraying it in my hair, I immediately saw more volume although it does, of course, give my hair a bit of a dryer feeling. It really puffs up my hair and allows me to have a messier look that I crave instead of my normal flat-straight look. Pretty impressed with this spray and it has a pleasant scent as well.

Balance Me Congested Skin Serum, 0.24 oz - Estimated Retail Value $11.50 (Buy a full-size 0.51 oz. bottle for $23.00)

This milky white serum has a wonderful citrus scent to it and is 99% natural. This is to be used as a spot treatment for blemishes which differs from the average facial serum. Alternately, you can use this as a preventative measure to parts of your face that are prone to breaking out. The formula is really light and absorbs super quickly. I'm lucky to not have any skin problems at the moment but will be keeping this around for the odd times that I wake up with a pimple on my chin. Arg!

MAC Cosmetics Strobe Cream in Pinklite, 0.2 oz. - Estimated Retail Value $4.08 (Buy the full-size 1.7 oz. for  $34.00)

As soon as I squeezed some of this moisturizer out, I could see it's iridescent property. Only a little of this warm and summery fragrant cream is enough to bring a super subtle glow to your skin. While I don't find it to be the dewiest hydrating moisturizer I've tried, it does make a good base before makeup to give a bit of a pop to weathered skin.

Love of Color Liquid Shimmer Shadow in Daybreak, 0.03 oz. - Estimated Retail Value $10.00

This color is exclusive to Birchbox, but I was able to find other colors online and it looks as though this is full-size. They describe it as "peach-gold" and it's a really pretty light champagne kind of color. I'm kind of loving all of the liquid eye shadows I've been receiving lately in boxes and this one is no different. I find it a really quick and simplified way to get a pop of color on my lids without taking up as much room as a full palette. Great to toss in a bag! This one is super creamy and has an exceptional pigment that really glitters with little effort. Just dab it on your lids and blend it out- or keep building for a bolder look.

Verdict: Birchbox's "Customer Favorite" curated box was really fun! Y'all know what's good! I think I've found a new go-to travel product in the R+Co cleansing foam and I'm really impressed with yet another Oribe product (per usual). This box has an estimated retail value of $38.76 which is more than twice the cost of the box.

Interesting, I have never seen anyone use the Strobe cream as a moisturizer. A subtle highlighter or primer over your day cream and SPF is how I was told it was to be used. But interesting. Great review, thank you!

Ah- this is the first time I’ve used strobe cream and both the info card and their website calls it a moisturizer, so that’s why I used it as such. I wonder if they changed how they talked about it?

I was thinking the same thing. 🙂 I started to think… hmm, maybe I shouldn’t have gifted all of those strobe creams I’ve received? I thought I missed something for a sec, but I think I’ll still gift them. Lol

Weren’t we supposed to get 6 tiny items with the price hike? $10 for old version, $15 for 6 items . its bad enough i was paying $10 for 5 tiny samples. Then it had a 50% price hike for1 more tiny sample. Now the price hike remains but were sliding back to the 5 samples
.

I think all of the other boxes this month had six samples (I know I have six coming in my box), but yeah– I was surprised to see one with only five.

I used to sub to Birchbox and purchased a lot of their things from the limited edition specials. Then out of the blue, I wasn’t able to renew or make any purchases. I called customer service and spoke to a Supervisor. Even though I ship everything to the US, Birchbox refuses all Canadian customers with a Canadian billing address. They asked me to put my billing address as US – I kinda pointed out, it is completely illegal.

Might be good to note, Birchbox does not accept any Canadian customers. They said it’s too costly and completely pulled out.

I hate to say this but I have received all these products, except MAC, in my previous boxes from BB. They seemed to have changed for a couple months but all the July boxes seem like the old version again where you received tiny samples.

I agree. And you’re lucky because they’ve definitely sent the MAC Strobe cream out many times before. I had a 3 month subscription that ended last month. They’d impressed me with their upgrades, particularly the curated boxes with a FS item or two (other than one of their own brands like LOC) so I definitely considered renewing. Now I’m so glad I didn’t. They do seem to be backsliding and I had trouble feeling like $10 was worth it before, let alone $15 now. I hope this was just a bump in the road. I’d be so mad if I got a 6 or 12 month sub based on their April – June offerings.
