Bless Box May 2019 Review
The full magazine that used to come with this box is now 100% online, but we did receive an info sheet detailing the products included. I would also like to point out that while this review is a bit late, I did not receive the May box until mid-June.
Perfectly Posh Hot and Gold Face Mask, 2 oz – Full Size! Retail Value $20
This mask is made with colloidal gold, caffeine, and hyaluronic acid, which are all ingredients I can get behind. Unfortunately, this is intentionally fragranced with notes of "florals, oud, and velvety moss," and I just can't get behind skincare products that are intentionally fragranced- doesn't that sound like a description for a body butter rather than something that you slather on your face?
Dove Body Wash Mousse with Rose Oil, 10.3 oz – Full Size! Retail Value $5.99
This has the consistency of shaving cream, so it is an absolute delight to lather up with. I use way too much every time, but this is one of the few bath products I am actually close to finishing up completely. If rose isn't for you then you won't like the prominent rose scent of this mousse, but they make a coconut oil and argan oil version too!
Hollywood Fashion Secrets Microfiber Makeup Removers, 2 pack – Retail Value $15
I don't understand why microfiber removes makeup so well, but it does. These wipes were especially fascinating to me when I came home one night less than sober with a face full of makeup, and it really only took water to remove everything except some stubborn mascara.
Bless Facial Cups – Listed Value $18
Nope, no thank you. There is a lot I will do for the sake of a review but this isn't one of them. In theory, this will help to promote circulation, collagen production, and cell repair, but this is not something I feel comfortable trying to achieve in my apartment bathroom. I will also note that I consider myself pretty up to date on "trends" and I have literally never heard of anyone doing this. Cupping in a more traditional sense is usually performed by physical therapists or other professionals when used for muscle recovery, and I think I will leave it to them.
DUCALM Walk Out Clean Shower Wipe – Retail Value $1.50
I work out often, and as much as I would like to immediately shower after every time, sometimes that is just not an option. Wipes like these come in handy, and I appreciate how thick this one was while smelling faintly of cucumber. It was gentle on my skin, too, and has ingredients like chamomile, aloe, and marshmallow root.
Marlowe No. 002 Extra Moisturizing Body Lotion, 15 fl oz – Full Size! Retail Value $10.99
Alright, look, I don't believe in gendering skincare products to begin with, but how did the Bless Box fail to mention that Marlowe is a brand that is specifically catering to men? Under the Marlowe About page, they state "We are for the no-nonsense man, the one who doesn’t try too hard. He is who he is and isn’t fooled by the bells and whistles or gimmicky tricks. We are for the guy who isn’t intimidated by grooming products." Does the fact that this was made for men make me like it less? No, it's a good lotion that doesn't leave me sticky and isn't strongly fragranced. But Marlowe themselves market this as a body lotion specifically for men, so I am not sure what it is doing in this box.
Foodstirs Mug Cake Mix – Listed Value $1.99
Look, I like cake and I am always happy to have new mug cakes for when the cake craving arises, but Foodstirs needs to get on Betty Crocker's level and include a frosting packet- cake without frosting is a muffin, thank you very much. This is made with organic ingredients, comes in at 280 calories, and it actually tastes pretty good (especially after I added cool whip since I was sans frosting).
Scentuals Pure Organic Argan Oil, 1 oz - Retail Value $22.41
I like having argan oil on hand to use as a multi-purpose oil. I'll use it on dry lips, dry cuticles, and frizzy hair, and I like that it doesn't break me out the way coconut oil does. I've lately been going through the tiny Josie Maran argan oil samples, so I am happy to have this bad boy for all of my moisturizing needs.
Soo’AE Unicorn Glow Hologram Sheet Mask – Retail Value $5 (on sale for $3.50)
Subscribers received a surprise Soo’AE mask, which was a brand featured back in February. I like the brand and I am happy with the ingredients list on this mask, plus the fact that this is actually holographic is fun.
Ardell Beauty Hydra Cream Lipstick in Fox – Full Size! Retail Value $9.99
This was the "fave lip item" that all subscribers will receive a variation of, and this previously came in the May 2018 box. This brown shade is really not my color, however, the lipstick itself is very hydrating and comforting to wear. Once I applied it I forgot I was wearing it, and though it doesn’t last as long as a liquid lipstick it lasts surprisingly long for a hydrating lipstick.
Here it is swatched.
The Verdict: Sometimes this box is a hit, and sometimes this box feels like a mish-mash of products that don’t really make sense. Once again, I think this month was the latter. It is clear that actual thought went into those facial cupping tools, but I have no idea what they were thinking. That combined with the fact that the men's body lotion was included but not described as such really just left me wondering if there is an actual effort to curate this box, or if they just send whatever they can get a discount on. I did like the Soo’AE mask and the argan oil, and I will never turn down cake. Value-wise, I calculated a total value of $110.87, which is below the promised value of $125.
