FYI - GlobeIn is ending the Essentials Box subscription:
We’re reaching out to inform you that we will be ending our Essential Subscription offering starting in August. As we continue to grow we’re simplifying our subscription offerings and focusing on our Premium subscription. Your account will be automatically upgraded to Premium starting in August. If you don’t want to upgrade to Premium, please cancel your subscription before your next billing date. If you choose to cancel, we recommend using any remaining add-on credits this month (July) to ensure you’re able to use your credits before the subscription is closed. You can start selecting add-ons on July 5th.
Below are answers to a few questions you may have.
1) Why are we canceling our Essential Subscription?
Over the years we’ve seen more growth with our Premium Subscription and have decided to focus the efforts of our small team on our Premium Subscription.
2) When will the Essential Subscription end?
July will be the last month for our Essential subscription.
3) What do I need to do?
If you do not want to be part of our Premium Subscription, we recommend using any remaining add-on credits this month and then cancelling your account. However, we hope you will stay and continue to support our artisans and our mission. If you would like to continue with a Premium subscription, you can either upgrade now, by clicking the link below or we will automatically upgrade you to a Premium subscription in August.

I have never subscribed but automatically shifting to an upgrade without consent from the subscriber is soooo shady. Do the terms of service even permit that? I have been interested in subscribing but now I wouldn’t.

Hope you’re not on vacation and checking your email daily because we’re notifying you after the month already started that in 20 days you will be upgraded or lose any add on credit you have! Win/win for us! I would have hoped they at least gave people a discount to upgrade.

FYI, I believe a note was at least in your subscription settings online for a few weeks and they may have sent out the email awhile ago. Also, word has been spreading in the Mavens Facebook group for a few weeks now and announcements were made in videos on social media. That is, of course, not to say that everyone would still get the message but it’s not like they have not tried or waited until the last minute.

LB, social media gossip and a note in your account settings really aren’t sufficient communication methods. Participating in their social media groups certainly isn’t required. And not everyone spends time looking around their account settings on a regular basis. The fact is, little active warning was given and people are rightly upset about it.
Automatically switching people on a $13/month subscription over to a $50/month payment is absolutely ludicrous. They really should be cancelling-with-the-option-of-switching to the premium box instead of swiching-with-the-option-of-cancelling. It’s really not surprising that they are facing criticism and suspicion for opting to proceed with this method of making the transition.
You clearly are a fan, have read into their practices, and follow the company in different ways. Based on this, you have developed a trust for the company. Not everyone gets that involved, however. And based on *this move,* people quite rightly feel that GlobeIn isn’t acting with the *customers* best interests in mind.

seems kinda shifty to automatically upgrade everyone to a more expensive box, rather than cancel subscriptions. Like they’re banking on a handful of people to forget to cancel, or not read the email.

Exactly! Why can’t they just cancel their subscriptions and email the people that if they’d like to remain subscribers they need to signup for the expensive box. This company always seemed shady to me. I can’t shake the feeling that they pay these artisans peanuts for their work and charge a ton for these boxes. 🤔

For a company to be an official B corporation, they need to provide substantial proof that they pay their people fare wages, etc. Over X amount of time. I understand why you might feel that way, but their standing as that type of corporation isnt something that can really be faked.
But, yeah. Super shady that they are upping the prices like this.
LB
The fair trade federation seal/certification on their company name disagrees with your feeling.
LB
They are a certified Fair Trade Federation Member which is not an easy thing to get. So they have to “pass” a bunch of criteria and prove that they are indeed paying fair wages for any items they buy direct from artisans. And they do source a bunch of things from artisans AND purposely place repeat orders in order to provide a consistent source of income for these people instead of just temporarily coming in and “disrupting” lives. I’m pretty confident they are supporting people much more than anything you will get in a big box store. You can read more about their mission and sourcing on their website.

I totally agree!
