Kal-Elle Fandom Monthly "Aladdin" Review
The theme this month is "Aladdin" - no doubt in celebration of the live-action movie that just came out! While the new movie left me feeling a little less than magical, this box looks like it's full of awesome things from the animated version I loved as a kid. For those keeping track, this seems to be the May box. Let's take a look!
Aladdin and Jasmine Magnet
One of my very favorite scenes from the film - Aladdin and Jasmine have gotten back from their magic carpet ride and Carpet is helping Aladdin pluck up the nerve to kiss Jasmine goodnight! This silhouette treatment is clever design and so nicely rendered. I'm putting it right on my standup freezer so I can see it every time I grab something for dinner (or, ahem, frozen Oreos).
4 x 6" Cave of Wonders Art Print
Both beautiful and menacing, the guardian of the cave where Aladdin finds Genie is done in the trademark watercolor style I've come to expect from these boxes! The inclusion of the lamp is a super nice touch.
Aurora Nail Polish in Genie, You're Free
I'm the happiest of clams when I receive nail polish - especially when it's in vibrant colors! I've received nail polish from this maker before, and I love that you can get full coverage in just two coats. This color, the exact color of Genie in the cartoon, is a great summer shade that would look perfect on both fingers and toes!
Genie's Lamp Earrings
No, seriously - how cute are these? I think the rendering is nicely representational so that there is no mistaking that these are magic lamps! Normally I'm a silver kinda gal, but obviously gold makes much more sense here from a stylistic perspective. These would be amazing for a movie where other Disney fans are sure to show, or even at the parks, as part of a Genie Disneybounding ensemble!
Castle Necklace
This bit of jewelry, while shiny and beautiful, confused me a bit at first! It's clearly Cinderella's castle, rather than the palace in Agrabah... see those flags? Definitely Cinderella! However, if you look at this in the right silhouette, I believe that's supposed to be an outline of Jasmine in the bottom of the castle! Kal-Elle always does a fabulous job of these statement necklaces while managing to keep them elegant - it's always amazing to see how they pull it off from month to month.
Genie and Al Pin
How deliciously '90s is this back-to-back pose? Besties for life, Aladdin and Genie, are just hanging out on this fun enamel pin! This design seems to really celebrate friendship, which I think is a nice sentiment to include in the box. This movie is one of the few Disney ones from the early nineties that shows true, selfless friendship, and illustrates someone giving up something for the better of someone else (when Aladdin frees Genie).
Magic Carpet Scarf
I saved my favorite item this month for last! This scarf is done perfectly in the pattern of Carpet, as called by Aladdin, aka the flying carpet in the movie. As a kid, I was absolutely enchanted by the way the animators were able to make this character emote and communicate without any speech whatsoever (of course, I had no idea how to articulate any of that until I was older). This scarf is sheer, and the colors are nice and rich. I daresay you could wear this with a purple tank and jeans, and many people might not even realize the reference (one of the reasons why I love it so much!).
Verdict: I gotta say, this box was shining, shimmering, and splendid this month (sorry - not sorry)! The items were a good mix of some of the things that Kal-Elle does best; particularly the necklace and earrings, and of course, that heavenly scarf. I've said it before, but you can really feel the love for the fandom in all of these items. They're well-researched and show a knowledge of the source material that makes me feel a kinship with the makers, and that's a really special element to this box.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you will receive the August box. From Kal-Elle:

Value Breakdown: This box cost me $19 + $3.75 shipping, which means that each of the 7 items in the box has an average cost of $3.25. The fact that this box is always so highly curated, and offers a wide variety of researched and well-designed items really adds value to the box.
