Knit Picks Skill Builder June 2019 Review
Knit Picks is a fantastic online store for knitters and crocheters, and it’s always been one of my favorite places to shop for yarn and tools! They recently launched a line of subscription boxes that feature different products, and although I’m primarily a knitter, I also love crochet and was excited to try this box!
A card is included in the box that details the contents of this month’s Crochet Lover box. The description reads:
A new, super cute project to work on while enjoying your best summer ever.
There was a second card in the box that goes into more detail on each of the different boxes available. MSA plans to review a different box type from Knit Picks each month, and we are leaving the choice up to you! Please let us know in the comments below which box type you’d like to see reviewed for July!
Now, onto the good stuff - the yarn!
KnitPicks Mighty Stitch Worsted in Blush, Ash, Canary, and White - Total Retail Value $15.96 (regularly $3.99 per skein, but some colors are on sale for $2.79-$3.59 currently)
We received four colors of the Mighty Stitch line from KnitPicks this month, which is one of the most affordable yarn lines from the brand. This yarn is SO soft, I could hardly believe it. It is one of the softest acrylic yarns I have ever felt, and it didn't feel plastic-y or stiff at all. We received a blush pink, a deep gray, a bright mustard yellow, and a true white.
This is a worsted weight yarn that contains 208 yards in 100 grams. It's 20% superwash wool and 80% acrylic. I was a little bit disappointed to see acrylic yarn included in the subscription box this month but was pleasantly surprised at how much I ended up liking this yarn. Acrylic has its time and place, and I think this yarn would be absolutely perfect for baby knits. I can already see the prettiest blanket made up using these four colors! I'm excited to have a new go-to yarn for future baby blankets, especially since this yarn is machine washable.
Kitty Hat pattern by KnitPicks - Retail Value $4.99
The pattern featured in the box is a crocheted baby/toddler hat with cat ears. I love the striped detail of the main part of the hat, and in the photos, the hat looks so fuzzy and soft! One thing to note is that the pattern only calls for three colors of yarn, but we were sent four different colors. There is no note of this on the card or anywhere else in the box, but I would think this was done so that you can make multiple versions of this hat with your different colors (or make different projects altogether, of course).
KnitPicks T-pins, 40 pack - Retail Value $4.99 (found here for $3.74)
One of the extras included this month is a box of 40 T-pins, which are great for blocking your finished projects. These pins are nickel-plated steel and rust resistant, which is always something you want to look for when buying T-pins since you will usually be using them with wet knits/crocheted pieces. They measure 1.5" long.
KnitPicks Metallic Locking Stitch Markers, 30 pack - Retail Value $6.99 (found here for $5.24)
How cute are these metallic stitch markers? These are perfect for crocheters because they open and close (unlike a ring-type stitch marker, which has been sent in many of my yarn subscription boxes). There are 30 stitch markers in gold, silver, and rose gold, and they have a cute storage tin that features a knit-like design on the front.
Here's my progress on the hat project for this month. I really like the stitch pattern - it's a new one to me, and I love the fluffy texture it gives each puff stitch. I can see myself making a lot of these simple striped hats (possibly without the cat ears each time) as baby gifts in the future. The pattern is very clear and easy to follow.
Here's an up-close view of the stitches. You can see that this yarn is quite fluffy and soft. I did have a little bit of an issue with splitting the yarn while I was pulling my crochet hook through since it is has a loose ply. However, I think if I was using a less sharp crochet hook I would not have had this problem.
Verdict: I thought this was a great Crochet Lover box! I think this is a perfect box for someone like me, who knows the crochet basics but is looking to take their skills to the next level. I appreciated learning a new stitch technique, and I love that I found a new go-to yarn for baby gift projects.
For $27.00, we received four skeins of yarn, a crochet pattern, T-pins, and stitch markers with a total retail value of $32.93. Knit Picks advertises the boxes as having a $30 value, so this is spot on with what they promise. If you know you are a fan of Knit Picks products, or you want to try new yarn and knitting/crochet items at a discounted price, I think this box has a great value!
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, if you sign up before July 15th, you will get the June 2019 box.
Value Breakdown: At $27.00, here’s approximately what you are paying for each item:
- Knit Picks Mighty Stitch Yarn - $13.06 ($3.27 per skein)
- Hat Pattern - $4.09
- T Pins - $4.09
- Stitch Markers - $5.73
