Little Bookish Wardrobe May 2019 Review
This review is for the one-child “boy box” in a size 5T.
What makes this info card different from many other subscriptions is that instead of defining the items included in the box, it provides you with ideas on how to play and learn with your child. I love this thoughtful touch!
This month, the back of the card features a secret pirate code. At 4, my son is probably a bit young for this but I can see where an older kid would have a ton of fun communicating using these pirate symbols.
The Beastly Pirates by John Kelly – Retail Value $18.99 (found here for $14.20)
From Amazon:
They're called The Beastly Pirates
and this fearsome ugly bunch
scour the seas for other pirates
they can gobble up for lunch.Beware THE BEASTLY PIRATES – the scariest sailors on the seven seas.
They're a cutlass-toting, pirate-eating bunch of renegades and the list of their dastardly deeds is endless. Dare you come to face to face with this motley crew?
I’m always pleased with the selections that come in this box. Although I thought at first, the one was a little bit scary for bedtime – when I got to the end I was able to smooth it all over and didn’t have an issue putting my son to sleep. I love the vivid pictures, fun rhyming, and what I consider to be some British humor!
Pirate Map
All pirates need a map! This poster-sized print would be great to hang in your little pirate's room! My son spent quite a bit of time just looking at it, tracing around with his little fingers, and pretending to read it to find treasure.
Pirate Dress-Up Costume
This pirate costume is perfection! And it has SO MANY PIECES. I love that it includes a shirt, jacket, pants, belt, hat, and eye patch. I know my son loved all of the details, although he thought that the shirt portion was "for girls" and didn't want to wear it because of the ruffles on it. I think the quality was fair this month and is what I consider typical for an inexpensive costume (lightweight, not super sturdy), and I do believe that it will hold up to some solid playtime.
Parrott Bracelet Craft Kit
This was a really great craft to make with my son. I let him pop the little foam cut out pieces out, and then remove the sticker backing to apply to make this craft. He had fun adding this accessory to his total pirate look! You can see the assembled craft below. It was ‘disassembled’ by my dog prior to me getting a clean photo of it.
My son is almost 4 years old, around 42” tall and around 36 lbs to help you get an idea on the size child that this costume would fit. There was plenty of room for him to grow.
Verdict: I loved this month’s theme and curation provided by the Little Bookish Wardrobe. Value-wise, it's difficult to calculate since so many of the items are exclusive to this box. I am using my own sense of satisfaction to determine if the value of the contents exceeded the $40.99 price of the subscription ($32.99 a month plus $8.00 shipping), which I do. Although the craft and map probably aren’t long for this world in my house, I think that the costume and book alone deliver the value.
