The Detox Box July 2019 Review feat. Herbivore

There are always two info cards that accompany the products in each Detox Box. One introduces the featured brand (Herbivore) with a Q+A and the other talks more in-depth about the products included (Prism Exfoliating Glow Potion, Phoenix Facial Oil, Lapis Facial Oil, and Orchid Facial Oil).

Herbivore Prism Exfoliating Glow Potion, 1 oz. full-size - Retail Value $62.00

Kudos to the super fun holographic box that this full-size potion lives in! And also kudos to the fact that $1 from every sale of Prism goes to a rotating LGBTQIA+ organization. I would liken this product to be closer to serum than anything else due to its consistency and it gives me hyaluronic vibes. It's thin but with a touch of a jellyish-ness, that feels slippery and hydrating.  It comes packed with a ton of awesome natural ingredients like rose water, aloes, and vitamin C to name a few but the stars here are really the fruit acids: bilberry lactic, sugar cane glycolic, orange peel citric, and apple malic. The directions say to use this one after cleansing but before a moisturizer. They also encourage mixing Prism with any of the other included oils to create the perfect cocktail for your own skin. That sounds super fun to me and I can't wait to see which ones will work best!

Herbivore Mini Facial Oil Trio, 3 x 0.3 oz. bottles - Retail Value $29.00

This trio is available on Herbivore's website for $29.00, but they say it has a $72.00 value, so it's up to you to decide which one you want to go with to make this worth it or not. The bottles included in this box all come individually boxed, unlike the set which has its own cute gift box.

Herbivore Phoenix Regenerating Face Oil, 0.3 oz. travel-size - Listed Retail Value $26.00 (Buy the full-size 1.7 oz. for $88.00)

Perhaps the most substantial of the three minis is this lovely orange Phoenix oil. Now that summer is in full swing and the sun is constantly blasting me in the face, I turn to this vitamin A rich oil that has one of my favorite ingredients, Sea Buckthorn, as well as neroli, chia seed, and rosehip oil. Together, these botanicals will help repair damage and bring the much-needed moisture to my skin. Although this one is slightly heavier than the rest, it has a heavier lift in making my skin look it's best.

Herbivore Lapis Balancing Face Oil, 0.3 oz. travel-size - Listed Retail Value $24.00 (Buy the full-size 1.7 oz. for $72.00)

Every time I go into Sephora, I stare longingly at the full-size bottle of Lapis and sigh. With all the skincare I receive in boxes, I simply cannot justify spending the $72.00 on this gorgeous facial oil. But here we now are, and I am in heaven. I never noticed that they have small bottles and this is just a wonderful way to try out all of Herbivore's various oils. After admiring the minimal graphic design, my eyes fixate on the beautiful blue hue as any good Pisces would. And what gives it that magical color? That's right, it's my #1 beloved, BLUE TANSY. It smells good enough to drink and since I know cannot do that, I will be using it to combat the redness that my chin has become accustomed to being over the past couple years.

Herbivore Orchid Youth Preserving Face Oil, 0.3 oz. travel-size - Listed Retail Value $22.00 (Buy the full-size 1.7 oz. for $64.00)

Oh, hello you subtle, pretty thing. This is Orchid, which contains squalane which I know to help retain my skin's moisture and slow down the look of aging. Herbivore uses olive-derived squalane which is nice to know. This oil gets its name from the orchid extract that is also a key ingredient and not only smells decadently floral but also acts as a humectant that smooths the skin. It's fast absorbing and such a delicate oil so I don't feel greasy after use.

Verdict: Detox Box made my dreams come true with this Herbivore-centered box! I am just delighted about getting to try all of these new oils and of course the Prism potion. I know I can get overloaded on facial oils, but I like how they clearly identify the different uses in these and they just look so darn nice on my bathroom shelf that I want to hoard even more Herbivore products! With these four items, the retail value is at least $91 if you settle on the $29 value of the mini trio. If you go full-value, then the total ends up being $134.

Just curious, if I subscribe for this box, will the August spoilers come out in time for me to cancel before they charge me for it?

I don’t think so based on when the spoilers have been posted on MSA over the past 3 months. I don’t know if this box sends spoilers in the email before they are posted. They charge on the 3rd of the month and I believe you might have to back out by the end of the previous month. Spoilers have been posted on the 7th or 8th. I went ahead and got this box and already canceled

Great review! Marne, I’d love your opinion, as a newbie to green beauty and skincare, would you recommend starting with this box or with Beauty Heroes? Your reviews make both sound so amazing!

To add on to Marne’s comment, both boxes are pretty much the same in that they always focus on one brand each month with always at least one full size product, but sometimes all products are full-size too! Plus, they both primarily focus on skincare products with what feels like the one time per year boxes that showcase only body or hair products. Some of the differences I’ve noticed are:

Curation – while the number of products included are generally the same (although Detox box sometimes features more products per box like Marne said) and they both primarily focus on skincare, with the Detox box they can feature the rare makeup or wellness box as part of their subscription, whereas Beauty Heroes only features those types of boxes as non-subscription one-time purchases. Since the Detox Box started in late 2017, I believe they’ve featured a makeup box twice, once in 2018 and once this year. This was the first year they featured a wellness box. Beauty Heroes did a makeup box back in 2016, but they got major flack for that, so now they only do them as one-time “Discovery” boxes.

Brands – The Detox Box will only feature brands that The Detox Market sells. Fortunately, they sell a ton of different brands. But along the lines of what Marne said, Beauty Heroes is great at including new or not so well-known brands since they have a much larger pick to choose from.

Products – Beauty Heroes is great at including exclusive products that haven’t launched anywhere else online, whereas Detox Box will feature products that may be new to us as subscribers, but have already been selling on their site.

Rewards/Discounts – As a Beauty Heroes subscriber, you automatically receive 15% off any purchases made on their site. The Detox Box has a rewards program where you can earn $$ off your online purchases, and the subscription counts toward the accrual of those points.

Wow thanks Luna! I really appreciate the in depth comparison. Think I’ll start with Beauty Heroes as I’m so intrigued by the Graydon products 😊

Marne Orenich

Oh my gosh, Jenny, that is like asking someone to pick their favorite child! The two you mentioned are both so amazing! Beauty Heroes pretty much just does two products each month, while lately Detox Box has been sending more, so it might depend on how much product you can handle. I feel like Detox Box features brands that are popular and I already know about and want to try while Beauty Heroes introduces me to more obscure brands that seem a tad more high-end as well. Hope this helps because there’s no way I could choose!

They are both so tempting! Think I’ll start with Beauty Heroes and go from there, thanks for the input and the excellent reviews!

Anna

Marne,
Can you find out if British Beauty box will ever be reviewed?

DawnS

So tempting but I have so many of my beloved Sunday Riley oils in full size that too many of the oils would go bad before I even got to them. ugh!

I have recently became obsessed with oils. So of course, I went ahead and got this. It’s coming in the mail today.
