Universal Yums “Indonesia” July 2019 Review
I love Universal Yums and how I can explore new countries and cultures through food, without leaving the comfort of my own home! My family gets so excited for this box that we have to open it as soon as we retrieve it out of our mailbox!
Upon opening the box, you are greeted with a beautifully illustrated map of Indonesia. This map includes fun facts, clip art, and information about some of the included items. On the back of this sheet, they include a ballot for “The Official Yum Awards.” This ballot can be filled out and posted on social media for a chance to win more of your favorite treats! It also includes a secret puzzle to solve, and a fun Indonesian game to learn!
Next, we have a detailed pamphlet including all of this month’s snacks, ingredient lists, fun trivia, a recipe, and a clue to next month’s box!
Let’s experience Indonesia at its finest!
Papatonk Black Pepper Cassava Crackers
I am in love!! These crackers are made out of an underground vegetable called cassava (aka the tropical potato). These are loaded with fiber, and the black pepper taste explodes in your mouth. These were so tasty! Trying these first really set the bar high for the rest of the box!
Beng Beng White Wafer - Buy a 12 pack for $18.99
These delicious white chocolate and coconut coated wafers with cream filling really left me wanting more! We were lucky enough to receive 2, but it’s still not enough! I love that they were coated in real coconut, and didn’t have a fake or artificial taste. My family was very impressed!
Garlic Presto Corn
To be honest, I can’t stand corn nuts. I’m not quite sure why, but I just hate the smell of corn nuts when you first open the bag. These are the Indonesian version of corn nuts, covered in a garlic seasoning. While I love the garlic flavoring, I still don’t care for the corn nut itself. My kids weren’t impressed either. I’ll pass these along to my corn nut loving husband!
Deka Choco Banana Wafer Roll - Buy a 350g container for $4.25
I love chocolate, and I really like bananas. Put them together in a vanilla wafer and I am happy! These sweet treats are creamy, and delicious with just the right hint of banana flavor. While I appreciated this flavor combo, my kids did not; more for me!
Yupi Noodles
Look at how adorable these novelty gummies are! They made the traditional Indonesian noodle dish mie goreng into a delicious gummy! These gummies were delightfully sour and had everyone fighting over them. (Both of my kids said these were the winners of the box.) I couldn’t find this exact product online, but go check out the Yupi website for other really cool candies!
Vanelo Pandan Layer Cake
This pandan flavored layer cake has cream filling and was quite good. The green coloring kind of scared my youngest son, but my oldest and I enjoyed it. The pandan was lightly sweet and perfect with a cup of tea!
TicTac Snack Grilled Beef
How adorable are these little grilled beef-flavored tapioca snacks? These little balls look like cereal, but have a yummy, salty beef flavoring! We just ate these plain and enjoyed them. However, the information booklet states these are often sprinkled on soup, which I would really like to try- just not when it’s 90 degrees out!
Deka Jumbo Cheese & Cheese Wafer Roll
We received 2 of these bright yellow packages of sweet wafer rolls with cheese filling, and I haven’t decided if that is a good thing or not. I love cheese, and I love cookies, but do I like them together? I’m still not sure. At first I didn’t, but then the flavor kind of grew on me. It’s definitely unlike anything I’ve ever eaten before! Maybe I’ll open the other one and see!
Mayora Coffee Joy - Buy a 180g pack for $11.99
I very rarely drink coffee, so when I see a coffee-flavored snack I’m usually a little bummed out (as are my kids,) but these light, thin, crackers are amazing! The package smells strongly of coffee, but upon tasting, they are lightly sweet, and delicious, and sprinkled in sugar! It doesn’t get much better than that!
Yupi Milly Moos
My kids were sooo excited to try these cow-shaped gummies! They were fruity, creamy, and sweet. The perfect all-around gummy! I looked online to order, but noticed you are unable to order through the Yupi website. I’m going to keep searching, because my kids NEED more!
Gulas Tamarind Candy - Buy three 5.2oz packs for $36.04
Tamarind comes from a tropical tree that is grown in Indonesia. The sour flavoring is used in this candy. I’ve never had tamarind before, but I gave it a whirl. It was definitely different, but tasted pretty good! My kids were too scared to try it, but I will definitely eat the rest of them!
Parago 2-in-1 Melon Milk Chewy Candy
Look at these cute little melon milk chewy candies! The bright wrapper features an adorable cow cartoon and a splash of milk! While I wasn’t sure what to expect out of a melon and milk flavor combination, I liked it! It was creamy and sweet with a slight milk flavor that made me want another one, but the kids had eaten them all!
Yupi Cola Burger
We were ecstatic to see another Yupi gummy treat in this box, but were admittedly a little scared of this one. I’m all for a fruit-flavored gummy, but a Cola flavored one? Hmmm… they were surprisingly good! They tasted like cola, and almost seemed to taste fizzy! Another gummy for the win!
The Verdict: We always enjoy the Universal Yums box, and this month was no exception. The wonderful balance of sweet and savory treats from another country is amazing, as is the time they take to curate this box. I love the literature they send, and the way they make this experience so fun! We can’t wait to see where next month comes from. The included clue mentions crunchy sweet berries, and crispy spiced cones which have my mouth watering already!
