Every Moment After by Joseph Moldover – Retail Value $17.99 (found here for $12.32)
This month’s YA book selection is Every Moment After – the story of friends Matt and Cole dealing with the aftermath of a school shooting eleven years later. Included with the book is the author’s signature, and a letter and another note meant to be read after finishing the book.
Book Summary from Amazon:
“Surviving was just the beginning.
Eleven years after a shooting rocked the small town of East Ridge, New Jersey and left eighteen first graders in their classroom dead, survivors and recent high school graduates Matt Simpson and Cole Hewitt are still navigating their guilt and trying to move beyond the shadow of their town's grief. Will Cole and Matt ever be able to truly leave the ghosts of East Ridge behind? Do they even want to?
As they grapple with changing relationships, falling in love, and growing apart, these two friends must face the question of how to move on—and truly begin living.”
This is a heartwarming story of two friends growing up and finding their path in life while dealing with past traumas and grief. It’s a touching story that explores the many aspects of “adulting” and building a life of your own.
From the Page “Avengers: Endgame” Candle, Lavender and Bergamot, 2oz – Estimated Retail Value $3.13
This Unplugged Book Box exclusive soy candle is scented with lavender and bergamot and smells amazing. The candle has little stars that float when the candle melts. Super cute!
Unplugged Book Box “Six of Crows” Crooked Kingdom Mason Jar – Retail Value $9.00
Another Unplugged Book Box exclusive, this sturdy mason jar reads "When you can't beat the odds, change the game" - a quote from Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows / Crooked Kingdom series. It comes with instructions to be careful with high heat. I'll probably handwash it to preserve the stencil.
Bliss Body Confections “Girls of Paper and Fire” Matcha Smoothie Mask, 0.3oz – Retail Value $3.99
Handmade with bentonite clay, rhassoul clay, and organic matcha powder, this mask deeply cleansed my face and pulled the dirt right out of my pores! It was easy to mix with just a tablespoon of warm water. It felt creamier on my face than other clay masks and didn't dry or irritate my skin. I loved it!
Best Life Handmade “Abby 'Wonder Woman' Suso” Lip Balm, French Toast – Estimated Retail Value $3.50
Made exclusively for Unplugged Book Box, this yummy lip balm made with cocoa and shea butters smells great and is ultra-moisturizing.
Out of Print Harry Potter Hogwarts House Socks – Retail Value $12.00
These Harry Potter unisex socks are cute and comfy. Best of all, with each purchase, Out of Print helps to fund literacy programs and book donations to communities in need. How cool is that?
Verdict: Unplugged Book Box pairs two of my favorite things: self-care and a love for books! I was hesitant to read Every Moment After but was happy to hear that the school shooting is not described in detail and is only referenced. That made all the difference to me as a mom with school-age children; I would not be mentally prepared for such a read. I liked all the self-care goodies in this month's box. The matcha smoothie mask was my favorite! I am still impressed with the results. Finally, I love that Unplugged Book Box partners with and supports small businesses. I'm discovering awesome brands with great quality products.
This Unplugged Book Box costs $43.49 (shipping included) and has an estimated retail value of $49.61 which is a little more than the cost of the box itself. This isn't an amazing value but I do think it's a fair price for a well-curated box of high-quality items, self-care goodies, and a newly released hardcover book.
