Prime Book Box July 2019 Review
My 3rd-grade daughter just turned eight years old and loves reading. We have a wide selection of age-appropriate books for her and we’re always looking to discover new favorites. We love seeking out children’s books with diverse stories and characters. We were excited to receive and review this month’s Prime Book Box.
The Big Idea Gang: Everybody Needs a Buddy by James Preller – Listed Value $15.99 (found here for $10.85)
Book Summary from Amazon:
“When third-graders Deon, Kym, Lizzy, and Connor formed the Big Idea Gang, their mission was simply to oust the old mascot in favor of something cooler. But sales from the new mascot paraphernalia have led to extra cash for the PTA, and you can bet this gang has big ideas about how to spend it. A playground pirate ship! An author visit! New basketball hoops! There are lots of ways they can think of to improve their school; but what about a way to make it a kinder, more inclusive place? Luckily, their teacher, Miss Zips, is skilled in the art of persuasion. Armed with Miss Zips's persuasive tips, the Big Idea Gang sets out to build a case for a new-and-improved Clay Elementary, and convince the rest of the school that their idea is the best.”
James Preller is the author of over eighty children's books. He's best known for The Jigsaw Jones Mysteries which have sold over ten million copies and Bystander which was named a 2009 Junior Library Guild Selection.
Everybody Needs a Buddy is the first book in The Big Idea Gang. We loved it! My third grader could totally relate to the gang of third graders who attends an elementary school a lot like her own. My daughter loved how the kids worked together and were kind to each other. I loved that the characters are diverse. This is something I actively seek out in books for my children. We highly recommend this book and found it age-appropriate and in line with my daughter's reading level.
Disney's The Never Girls Volume 1: Books 1-3 by Kiki Thorpe and Illustrated by Jana Christy – Retail Value $15.99 (found here for $12.79)
Book Summary from Amazon:
“In a blink of an eye, four best friends all get their biggest wish--they're whisked off to Never Land, home to Tinker Bell and her fairy friends. A great gift for readers ages 6 to 10, this attractive hardcover collects the first three Disney The Never Girls adventures--In a Blink, The Space Between, and A Dandelion Wish.”
Kiki Thorpe is a New York Times bestselling author and former editor of more than 30 books for young readers including this The Never Girls early chapter book series which has been published in 24 countries. Jana Christy is a children’s book illustrator of multiple picture books and a commercial art designer.
My daughter has been engrossed in the first of these three books! This is an easy and fun read for her. I love when she can imagine herself in a story. She explained to me in detail how she would feel if she was swept into an imaginary world. She used words like "exciting" and "inspiring!" I'm pretty sure she'll fly through all three books in no time.
Verdict: The Prime Book Box comes in its own specially designed book box featuring fun kid-friendly characters. It’s very cute and my daughter gets excited when this box is delivered because she knows it’s just for her. This month’s selections were both great, engaging and age-appropriate.
Everybody Needs a Buddy was fun, relatable and had themes of collaboration and kindness. The Never Girls was playful, fun, and imaginative. These books offer a little bit of an ideal reality and a fanciful tale. My daughter loved both stories but if she had to pick just one, it would, of course, be The Never Girls. These books are perfect for 8-year-olds that love Tinkerbell and a good fairytale.
Amazon says: "Prime Book Box saves you up to 40% off List Price, and is always an equal or better value than Amazon's everyday low prices. In the event that the books in your box are available from Amazon.com for less than $19.99 at the time your order is placed, you'll receive the lower price automatically.” This month, this exact thing happened so the price was automatically adjusted.
The cost of the Prime Book Box is $19.99 but this month’s box was $16.99 and has a list value of $31.98. The retail value is $23.64 – the cost of purchasing the books directly from Amazon at this time of this review. This box represents over 45% savings off list price and is a better value than Amazon’s prices at the time of this review.
