Prime Book Box June 2019 Review
My soon to be 3rd-grade daughter just turned eight years old and loves reading. We have a wide selection of age-appropriate books for her and we’re always looking to discover new favorites. We love seeking out children’s books with diverse stories and characters. We were excited to receive and review this month’s Prime Book Box. We are super excited about this month’s picks!
The Yin-Yang Sisters and the Dragon Frightful by Nancy Tupper Ling and Illustrated by Andrea Offermann – Listed Value $17.99 (found here for $12.75)
Book summary from Amazon:
“When a fearsome dragon takes over their village bridge, twin sisters Mei and Wei have opposing views of how to fix the problem. Wei wants nothing more than to confront that stinky old dragon head on, but Mei favors a more thoughtful approach. With Wei's confidence and gumption plus Mei's creativity and diligence, it's only a matter of time before everyone can be happy again.”
Award-winning children’s author, poet, and librarian Nancy Tupper Ling is the winner of the prestigious Writer’s Digest Grand Prize and the Pat Parnell Poetry Award. We love that her books contain diverse characters. Illustrator Andrea Offermann, a graduate of the Art Center College of Design, is an artist and the illustrator of this book.
We loved the story of the Yin-Yang Sisters! It shows the bond between siblings, teamwork, and sticking together even when it’s tough to do so. The sisters prove that teams can be very different but also work together well and for the greater good. The parents show the value of hard work. The story reminds us to never give up and to also question what others may say or assume about us. This book is full of lessons and relatable characters!
Mad Scientist Academy: The Dinosaur Disaster by Matthew McElligott – Retail Value $17.99
Book summary from Amazon:
“Welcome to Mad Scientist Academy! The first day of school is always exciting, and Dr. Cosmic’s new students can’t wait to get started. After their teacher reveals that their school pet, Oscar, is a dinosaur, they quickly realize Dr. Cosmic has an unusual teaching style. To find Oscar, the class has to follow the clues through the realistic dinosaur exhibit Dr. Cosmic designed and built over the summer. But when a malfunction causes the robotic dinosaurs to come alive, this prehistoric exhibit feels a little too real!”
Matthew McElligott is the author and illustrator of many children’s books. His award-winning books have been published around the world – in more than five languages and on five continents. He’s also an art and design professor.
We loved the comic book style of this book. The title “Mad Scientist Academy” lead us to believe it would be about science and experiments, but we overlooked the “The Dinosaur Disaster” part of the title! This book is really about dinosaurs and is actually quite educational. Unfortunately for my daughter, she has already learned all she wants to know about dinosaurs. So, we’re passing this book down to her baby brother who still gets very excited at the mention of a T-rex!
Verdict: The Prime Book Box comes in its own specially-designed book box featuring fun kid-friendly characters. It’s very cute and my daughter gets excited when this box is delivered because she knows it’s for her. This month’s selections were two very different stories.
The Yin-Yang Sisters and the Dragon Frightful was a very heartfelt and thoughtful story with lots of lessons. My daughter loved this story the most because of how relatable the sisters were and how ridiculous the dragon behaved. Mad Scientist Academy: The Dinosaur Disaster was a bit boring. There were lots of characters in the story, but you don’t get the opportunity to learn much about them aside from the one kid that brings the stinky lunch to school. But, it perfect for any kid who loves dinosaurs!
