Astral Box August 2019 Review

items list

Oh, what fun! This month's Astral Box packaging features artwork from illustrator Karmijn Simons (@karmijnsimons). It's so wonderfully pleasing to the eye and highlights the Earth theme of this month. Open up the pamphlet and you'll find information about Astral Box's charitable component, as well as a list of products in this month's shipment.

Matakana Skincare Quartz Crystal Face Polish – Retail Value approx. $19.39 USD ($30 NZD)

You'll never have a shortage of high-quality, intentional, amazing, wonderful face products as long as you're subscribed to Astral Box! The first one included this month is from an ethical, cruelty-free company. This beautifully floral-scented face polisher exfoliates with finely ground quartz crystals. How cool is that? It leaves the face feeling incredibly clean and smooth.

Ibu Ayurveda Vata Body Oil, 2.02 fl oz – Listed Value approx. $15.43 USD ($24 NZD) (Larger bottle found here)

Here's another amazing-smelling product for the skin. Some really unusual, organic restorative herbs were used in this blend, which is meant to be pumped into the hands and warmed by rubbing them together, then spread on any part of the body that needs restoration and brightening. I love love love that they recommend how to use it specifically on a postpartum belly.

The Ibu Ayurveda website also sells similar oils for the Pitta and Kapha doshas. If you're not sure which dosha is right for you, there are quizzes you can take online.

Sacred Self-Care Oracle Deck — Listed Value approx. $32.15 USD ($50 NZD)

My favorite aspect of Astral Box lately has been paper items (for lack of a better term) that they've included—affirmation cards, a poetry journal last month, and now this self-care deck. They're unlike anything else I've received in other subscription boxes and are really wonderful tools to have on hand for when I need some assistance accessing a higher self.

The cards feature a range of suggestions, from spiritual-leaning suggestions (pictured in the upper group I have displayed) to some more tangible, almost indulgent forms of self-care. I especially love having items like this deck in the house that I'm raising my daughter in. I want her to think like this from an early age!

Aragonite Crystal Cluster — Listed Value approx. $9.64 USD ($15 NZD)

What an eye-catching stone this aragonite cluster is! Its rust color is totally in my palette and felt a part of my home immediately. According to the included products list, this is "the conservationists stone." It's a stone of healing—both of the earth and emotionally—and can be used for grounding. Lovely!

Wild Earth Green Chai Tea — Listed Value approx. $5.79 USD ($9 NZD)

I noticed a trend in the past couple of years of sub boxes including loose-leaf tea. The concept of that is so romantic, but not always the most practical! So I appreciate that this Astral Box green chai tea came in sachets. I think of chai as a cooler-weather flavor, but recently ate a chai-masala chocolate chip cookie that made me realize I've been doing it all wrong by considering it seasonal. Despite being green tea, this stuff is caffeine-free. It's yummy!

Plant Magic Online Course — Listed Value approx. $12.86 USD ($20 NZD)

Hmm, so the last item that's listed as being included in this box is a Plant Magic Online Course, but I didn't receive any sort of card or informational booklet about it. It's no problem, though, as a website is provided, and when I followed it I was able to access the course with no problems. In other news...plant magic? Yasss! This course teaches about 10 new plants and includes self-care activities, rituals, and recipes for them. What a dream!

Verdict: I am really feeling the August Astral Box! My favorite items are the self-care deck and the plant magic online course, but the beautiful beauty products and unique crystal are amazing supporting products that I can easily see being favorites for subscribers with slightly different preferences. Based on listed values, the items in this box have a total retail value of around $148 USD, which exceeds the $67-$101 USD value range that was promised by Astral Box

What an interesting and beautiful box. This box seems to be curated mindfully unlike so many subscription boxes out there where you have to really stretch the imagination to understand how certain items ended up in a particular box in the first place. I’m impressed so far and will definitely be keeping my eye on this. Thanks for the review! Would love to hear more about the online plant magic course if you have the time. What kinds of plants?! Were you inspired to do anything with what you learned? What was the structure of the course?

Hey Katie, yes, I totally agree that it stands out in its mindful curation. For the Plant Magic course, they have setup a really user-friendly web course that goes over some familiar plants (like lavender, rosemary, chamomile) and some new-to-me ones (like borage and mullein); 10 total. After a quick intro, each plant has its own section with spiritual uses, emotional uses, physical uses, recipes, and some activities. As you read through, a sidebar with an outline updates to follow your progress. I’m not the whole way through it yet but so far it’s really just an introductory course, and easy to digest. Hope that helps!
