BarkBox is a reader-favorite monthly subscription box for dogs.
BarkBox customizes your box to your dog’s size. For reference, this review is for the small size (my smaller dog weighs 12 lbs and my pug is closer to 28). We recently adopted a 50 lb standard poodle, so we might try a new size in the future!
FYI: Two of my dogs are quite old! Piper (the minpin) has to eat soft food and has trouble with hard treats. Charlie is a pug, and a glutton who will eat LITERALLY anything. They both still really enjoy toys, though it has been years since either of them managed to destroy anything.
If you have a younger pup or just one who needs toys of the rough and tumble variety, I highly recommend trying the Super Chewer subscription (read our reviews to learn more!).
My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

July 2019 BarkBox "Hairy Metal" Review
Each box arrives with an information card with details about the items included. I am so stoked that the theme this month is rock and roll! Rock and bowl? Hmm..
The July box included 2 toys, 2 bags of treats, and a chew - this is close to what you can expect with your monthly subscription, though it does vary for everyone once in a while.
A lot of these items are marked as 'Sold Out' on the BarkBox app - but they have a little 'As Seen In BarkBox' section of the BarkShop where you can grab items featured in monthly themes.
Hog Gobblin Dog Treats
Smells like teen spirit to me! These rectangular treats were a big hit with the band. They were a little big but broke into pieces easily, meaning your pups think they are getting so many treats out of just one.
That is the face of approval if I have ever seen it!
Rockstar Breakfast Dog Treats
Ok, I get that these are bourbon flavored but holy cow they smelled boozy. I couldn't quite get past the alcohol scent, even though the churro shape was really cute.
Tucker enjoyed them, even if I didn't.
Squeak and Destroy Drums Toy
Ok, this is where the box started getting really exciting. This toy is a mini drum set complete with crinkle cymbal and two squeaky drums! They are all connected with a thick red tug rope. Charlie is the pack's crinkle enthusiast and the stuffing-free cymbal was his favorite part by far. Looks like the band has a beat!
I always knew Charlie was the percussion type.
I literally squealed when I pulled this toy out. A guitar with a strap! Are you kidding me?! Charlie is too round to "wear" this toy but it fit Piper perfectly. I would consider her the frontman of the group anyway, so this worked out. Inside is a super fun mix of crinkle and squeak, so I do anticipate Charlie dabbling in guitar rifts as well eventually.
Piper, always making it look natural.
Would it even be a Megan BarkBox review if I didn't make my cat Birdie try on any wearable items?
Yum Solo! Drumstick Chew, Retail Value $3.00
Tucker continues to benefit from the chews that come each month. The other pups are too old to really enjoy them, but since he doesn't have the hang of toys yet I am fine with giving these to him instead. This stick was rather hard, which was good because it lasted him a nice long while. He seemed to really enjoy the turkey flavor.
What is a good indie band without an *artistic* band poster?
Am I a stage mom yet?
Verdict: This month's BarkBox was so stinkin' cute! While one of the items was literally too stinky (bourbon snacks were not a hit for most us) everything else was delightful! The guitar literally stole the show, but the drum kit was a close second favorite. I really love that this sub sends toys that are super crinkle-heavy because all of my dogs love that element. Tucker enjoyed his drum stick and everyone approved of the hog treats. Rock on!
