Birchbox Grooming Men's Sample Box July 2019 Review
I'm having my husband, John, give me his rundown of this box since he is the grooming expert in our house. Here's just a quick snapshot of what his skin and hair are like, you can get a better idea of how the products work for him:
- Skin - Smooth, clear, and in great shape, considering he does nothing to keep it that way. John took Accutane for acne as a teen, so he doesn't experience active breakouts anymore (but he does have some scarring). I'm currently trying to show him how important it is to work on preventing aging before it starts!
- Hair - Coarse and wavy.
This card details the theme of the month and the items included in John's box. Plus, it offers some tips on how to use the products. Now, onto the items!
Hims Heart Gummy Vitamins - Estimated Value $4.52 (Buy a full-size 42 gummy bottle for $19 here)
John loves gummy vitamins so these are perfect for him! They taste fine but definitely not good enough to confuse them with candy. Each gummy contains 400mg of phytosterols which are supposed to help maintain healthy cholesterols levels but not much else. They are gluten-free, contain no artificial flavors, colors, or sweeteners but do have 3g of carbs (2g sugar) per gummy. These little test packets are great to have a try before investing in a big bottle.
Brickell Men's Products Balancing Toner - Estimated Value $1.56 (Buy a full-size 8oz version for $25 here)
John has tried several toners that he has gotten from Birchbox and has begun to include them in his daily routine. This alcohol-free, balancing toner smells just like a peppermint-dipped cucumber (which John doesn't love) and leaves a cooling sensation (which he loves), especial after shaving. The witch hazel acts as an antiseptic to prevent breakouts without being as drying as some other astringents. Note: This little bottle doesn't have a size listed so I'm guessing that it's about 0.5 oz.
LXMI Creme du Nil, 7ml - Estimated Value $11.28 (Buy a full-size 36ml version for $58 here)
This cream is "powered by a rare ingredient found only in Uganda called nilotica" which is a relative to shea butter. It's full of fatty acids and allantoin which help to moisturize and protect the skin barrier. The texture is light but rich and the vanilla scent is nice. I think it has the distinct waxy feel of shea butter based creams which leaves skin feeling soft and velvety. John thinks it's fine but I may end up using this one since I have much dryer skin.
Hero Cosmetics Mighty Patch Original, 6 patches - Estimated Value $2.16 (Buy 36 patches for $12.99 here)
So these patches have only one ingredient, hydrocolloid, and are meant to place over whiteheads for at least 6 hours to draw out impurities. They turn white when ready to be taken off and are supposed to absorb the gunk from a zit. They also act as a barrier to prevent the blemish from further dirt. John has great skin but gets tiny clogged pores from shaving, so he tried the patches on a couple of different spots overnight. He even kept a "control" zit to compare. He didn't notice any difference in the blemish size in the morning but said that he couldn't feel the patches on his skin once they were stuck.
Anthony Glycolic Facial Cleanser, 30ml - Estimated Value $3.54 (Buy a full-size 237ml version for $28 here)
John has tried a lot of cleansers and this one doesn't make the cut. It has a couple of good qualities – it's gentle, non-foaming, and not heavily fragranced – but John couldn't get past the weird texture. He thinks it's a bit slimy and doesn't feel like it washes away completely.
Verdict: This month, John received 5 new products to try. Birchbox Grooming has helped John find some of his all-time favorites, but this month just didn't have anything he loved. I estimate a value of $23.06 for this box which is almost double the cost of the box. Not every month is a winner but John looks forward to trying new products. It's convenient that he can purchase full-size versions from the Birchbox shop.
