OwlCrate Jr August 2019 "Thieves in the Night" Review

This month's theme is "Thieves in the Night" and our box includes several thief-worthy items! This card details some of the items we received in our box.

Each month they send a little magazine that features an interview with the author. This month they also included a crossword puzzle and an interview with a vendor for one of our box items. The last page offers information about their photo challenge contest.

The Good Thieves by Katherine Rundell - Retail Value $17.99 (found here for $16.19)

This month our book is signed by the author! Our story takes place in the 1920s and is about a girl named Vita who travels all the way from Europe to New York City with her mother to find her Grandpa and bring him home with them now that his wife has passed and he is all alone. Sadly, his family castle was stolen out from under him by an awful crook and Vita, who can’t stand to see her grandfather so distraught, forms a plan to steal back what was rightfully theirs starting with her grandmother’s emerald necklace which is hidden somewhere inside the castle. Since she can’t pull off this great heist on her own, she soon enlists the help of a few unlikely friends and together they become “necessary thieves” in order to right this wrong - no matter how dangerous it might be! This story had a lot of heart and was an easy read with a lot of likable characters to root for!

In each box, there is a signed letter from the author. This is such a unique and personal inclusion that I always appreciate and this month we get a bookmark, too!

OwlCrate Jr Exclusive Magnetic Bookmark Set by Crafted Van

This magnetic bookmark set is so cute! I love that it features Robin Hood and Little John since they are some of the best thieves in history. This fun set makes perfect sense in this box!

OwlCrate Jr Exclusive Blueprint Notebook

In our story, our main characters were off to steal back what was rightfully theirs and this month we received a few tools to pull off our own heist. To plan our heist, we will need a notebook to sort it all out. This fun notebook features blueprints for our target and our goal complete with graphing paper inside to fully form our plan!

OwlCrate Jr Exclusive Bandit Mask

Once we have our plan in place, it's time to gear up and execute it! Thankfully, they sent us this mask which is perfect for keeping our identity safe should we get caught!

Funko 5 Star Aladdin Collectible Vinyl Figure Set - Retail Value $10.99 (found here for $7.50)

They even provided the perfect sidekick for our heist, one of the best Disney thieves and a favorite of mine, Aladdin. This collectible Funko set is really fun and goes perfectly with our theme! I love the size and quality of these figurines and all of the detail on them. I'm glad they didn't forget our lamp and that Aladdin's arms can move so that he can hold it comfortably in case we happen to run into trouble and need Genie.

Giant Emerald Gemstone

Alas, our heist was a success and we recovered this priceless gemstone! How fun is this month's theme and this giant "emerald" gemstone? I love that it goes along with our story, and who doesn't love having a jewel this big that they can pretend is the real thing?

My three-year-old certainly had fun running around shouting "jewel thief, jewel thief" and pretending to steal it in our new bandit mask!

Emerald Button

Each box includes a button that fits with the monthly theme, and this pin with a gemstone is fitting of our story!

Verdict: This month's OwlCrate Jr box felt like a complete experience! I love all of the heist-related items that we received which go so perfectly with our signed book. I also love that they included the awesome Funko Aladdin set and those cute magnetic bookmarks! This collection of exclusive items felt thoughtfully curated. Since so many of the items we received were exclusive, it's difficult to estimate the value, but at $35.98 ($27.99 + $7.99 shipping) for this box with a book that retails for $17.99, that leaves a total of $17.99 for the remaining 6 items, giving them an average value of about $3.00, which seems more than fair!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you will receive the September box.

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

This month was a huge hit with all three if my kids (aged 11, 10, and 6)! All three of them played “jewelry heist” for HOURS one afternoon! And my 10 year old told me this month’s book is his favorite book. This was a great month for us!
